Crayford was Tuesday. After I started driving (after White City closed), I used to pop over to Crayford sometimes. Biggest problem was the poxy drive around the South Circular! Plus, they never opened until after Wimbledon switched to Thursdays.

Hey, I was the same. After Crayford closed, I like to pop up to Milton Keynes on a Tuesday. I also liked Canterbury and Rye.

My old friend now deceased, Tony Armstrong used to ride for Crayford.

Even in my teens, I had three a week!

Four a week for me sometimes and I went to all four.

    Monday: Wimbledon

    Tuesday: West Ham

Wednesday:  Oh dear, what can I do? Occasionally it was Crayford....think that was a Wednesday.

    Thursday: Wembley

    Friday: Hackney

Then it was follow wherever West Ham was on a Saturday and Canterbury or Eastbourne on a Sunday

But, it would not be unusual for me to go six times a week. Damn, what a Speedway NERD I was!

See we have an important correction, that Gary Fords parents were in fact from Scotland, not England at the bottom of the forum

True.....I knew both Joe and Margaret Ford and there is absolutely NO doubt they were Scottish!

Just received my latest edition of the "Classic Magazine". Great article about the Soviet/Russians. I only hope that the magazine is able to continue and that Tony manages to negotiate a deal with a prospective interested party.

Agreed Steve......its been a great magazine and VSM before it......I echo your thoughts that it can continue.

  5. Split......or rather Squire Waterman got his nickname when he bent over and split his leathers all the way down......he was originally nicknamed Split Arse but Split remained until the end!

I ain't selling my programmes whatever the price-just in the interest of research though-how much could I get for my treasured Newport v. Long Eaton Southern League meeting held in July 1964, heavily marked with indecipherable substitution notes. Unlike Norbold however I am not asking for a friend as I don't have any!!!

You should get a Buck two ninety eight for that one Bob......LOL

  7. Modern day rarity is Poole 1958 England v Australasia Test match, it never ran and the programmes were never released except for a few that were mailed out before the event, I know of only 6 in existence. All have a fold down the center where they were put in envelopes for mailing. This one can go for as high as 200 quid.

    And how much?

Better know as 19 February 1928, the highest one that has sold is 5000 quid.

Next is probably Celtic Park at just over 1000.

Closest is my collection is the Warrington England v The Rest for 900.

This is the link for SPEEDWAY MUSEUM ON LINE. It's worth a visit IMO:

You are such an ar*e John.....why are you posting this on every thread possible. I used to have respect for you, it has now drained completely away, all you seem to want to do is destroy every thread, promote your own sites and generally try to p**s people off. Well congratulations you have succeeded.....now please go way!

  10. Pretty well any Pre-War programme.....they are full of information, some of them great graphics.

Not all of them of course, especially in the early days as they were just a four page card.

The internationals of the pre-war days were always special, which is why I collected those all my life.

Fear this event  has all the ingredients of  backfiring big time. To my mind hardly an inspiring event, screwed season tick holders again. Claiming  how wonderful they are by  keeping keeping entry fees the same  despite  more races. As  a season ticket holders(going against my better judgement) I am hoping to be escorted by Securicor in view of cash I will need to carry.  Suspect programme will be dearer than usual  and they will also charge for parking.

Looks like the programme is actually cheaper by .50p....that would be a shock!

Checking out the programme on Curtis-sports.

Although I do have some stuff that isn’t related to meetings I have been to or riders i have seen, most of my stuff is fairly personal. So I wonder once a collection gets going, does it become something of an obsession?

YES! It does become a bit of an obsession but its fun doing it most of the time at long as it doesn't get out of control.

Thank you - yes I’m missing a few Star Finals and one Test match. If I can get them I’ll have every single Speedway programme from Wembley Stadium.

I'm missing a Star Final (1931) from my collection too but I do have all the Internationals.........What international are you missing? I have a few spare from the '30's?

Although i don't have one particular item that is massively valuable or rare, I am quite chuffed I have every Speedway Star and one-off World Final programme.

The three pre-war and the 61 fetch good prices these days the '36 went for over 300 quid recently.

My entire collection of Wembley Lions home programmes which is complete from 1929 to 1939, 1946 to 1956 and finally 1970/71.

My favourite is probably the first one dated 16 May 1929!

That means not the Star Finals also? Great Collection!

I think my comment is in so far as it shows that not everyone who goes to speedway follows the thread topic under discussion.

But you don't go to Speedway!!!! Can we stop this somehow before yet another thread is destroyed please!

  17. Bonny Good, never heard of him, may have emigrated to Canada but he most definitely did not compete at Speedway in the early '50's as there wasn't any Speedway or tracks in the Toronto area. Speedway didn't come back until 1959 in Dundas, again far from Toronto area.

There have never been tracks in the Toronto area since the old Ulster stadium of the 1930's......Ulster Stadium closed in 1943 for development.
