  3. ANNOUNCEMENT | Due to the lack of riders we have regrettably had to postpone Danny’s Day 2 until later in the season. We feel as though the meeting deserves a top class line-up and the date of June 11 has meant too many riders are now unavailable. We want to thank the Glasgow Tigers Speedway promotion for their understanding and we are working hard to sort a new date later in the season to re-stage the event. All of those people who have already bought tickets can be assured they will be valid for the new date. Thanks to everyone for their understanding.
  4. Sat 6 May Redcar Gallagher Cubs 11 Birmingham DUCTAIR Bulls 25 ( reduced by 9 =16 due to ineligibility of Luke Muff ) Cubs : Edward Davidson 3r 5 , Dayle Wood 3r 4, Alex Goldsborough 3r 2+1, Katie Gordon 3r 0) Bulls : Luke Muff 3r 9 (deducted from team total) ; Jason Garrad 3r 9; Tim Colley 3r 5+2; Jacob Fellows 3r 2) Injury hit Birmingham Bulls started their defence of the MDL title with a win at Redcar. Luke Muff rode to a 3 ride maximum but his points were deducted from the teams 25 points as he is ineligible due to his National League average. He was joined on a maximum by debutant Jason Garrad who has returned to racing after 8 years out of action. Tim Colley backed them up with paid 7 whilst Jacob Fellows was beset with spark plus problems missing his first ride and then packing up on the final bend when on a 5-1 with Muff. For the home side Dayle Wood notched two second places before his bike failed on the start line in his last ride. Edward Davison top scored with 5 being involved in a tough four lap battle with Tim Colley in heat 4 . Katie Gordon blew a motor at the start in heat 1 whilst local lad Alex Goldsborough notched paid 3.

The 125's have their own rides at MDL meetings with 4 / 5 riders getting rides but points not counting in team totals . The MDL with 4 riders per team gives more riders track time and has always worked well ,,, and with squads of six gives more riders the chance of rides . The NJL system works well for them but won't change what the MDL does. Each to their own. As for ineligible riders this is avoided at all costs but the Bulls were missing 3 riders with injury (Luke Harrison, Kai Ward and Billy Budd plus Bailey Fellows has his university final exams) and Luke Muff (an ex-Bull) was in need of some track time. Taking off his 9 points did not alter the end result ... the NJL use their system and the MDL theirs. Neither is right or wrong and the public don't get confused changing points in those races. Both leagues do a great job producing riders and giving them valuable track time .

In the MDL the points scored by an ineligible rider are decucted from the team total rather than moving places up in each heat ,,, so result becomes 11-16 taking off Muff's 9 points

As Alfie was excluded ( harshly) in heat 1 that does not count as a ride so he couldn't be replaced in heat 10 as had to have his third compulsory ride ... and that 5-1 with Nick Morris who superbly team rode was a joy to watch.

which 4? Freddy Hodder's granddad rode for the Bees so has connections with the club. The Thompson twins may not have ridden in the Bees side but started their speedway on 125's at Brandon , Connor Mountain rode in Cov colours in 2018, Chris Harris, Danny King and Adam Roynon were definitely Bees.

    MDL 2023

MDL to return After discussions the 2023 Midland Development League will comprise of three teams meeting each other home and away. Reigning champions Birmingham DUCTAIR Bulls are back aiming for their 4th successive title after wins in 2019, 2021 and 2022 . Unfortunately 2022 members Kent and Wolverhampton are not competing in the league this time but are both doing challenge second halves and individual events. Birmingham are entering a second side at Perry Barr in the newly formed Buffaloes sponsored by Birmingham Supporters Club. Joining them will be the Redcar Cubs , who are also competing in the Northern Junior League , but like Birmingham, run regular second halves for the youngsters. League co-ordinator, Laurence Rogers, is pleased to have three sides in the league but would have liked more, “I was determined that this development league would continue . Like our sister tracks in the NJL we have produced a whole host of riders who started off their first experience of riding in a team in league racing.” “I had hoped that more tracks would have joined us but , despite trying to get some more tracks do it, we are down to the bare minimum to run a league. Seeing that Edinburgh had been allowed to run two NJL sides I approached Neil Vatcher to enquire if we could run two teams out of Birmingham and this has been approved. We have run two teams before when Milton Keynes were based at Perry Barr.” “I have a list of riders eligible for the MDL which incudes a few new 15 year old I have been monitoring and who will be used in either the Bulls or Buffaloes squads which will be run as separate sides.” “I must thank Jamie Swales and the Redcar management for stepping in as the third side in the league. The league is primarily aimed at giving young riders valuable track time and learning to be involved in a team environment that will stand them in good stead for the future.” “In addition to the MDL fixtures we will be staging some challenge encounters plus doing an individual series like we did before and some 125cc and 250cc racing with the aim of running a second half every meeting.” “ I am working on the fixtures and will release the dates as soon as they are all confirmed.” “With no southern based teams we can revert the name of the league to the MDL in 2023.”
