    Speedway In Lithuania?

In Google Earth I found what looks to be a Speedway track in Riga. It's in a park area next to a road course and kart complex. Not sure how to link a photo so I'll post the coordinates. 56 57 53.80 N 24 13 51.75 E It's also possible to see it following f-s-p's link above. Drag the map so that it scrolls to the upper left and look for a label "Mezciems". The track is located just above near the small lake. Click on Katu on the upper left of the map to change to an aerial photo. On GE it looks like it could be active, possibly some type of car racing?? but looks like it should be perfect for Speedway.
  4. Personally I think this is a great idea. If done properly it could be an excellent opportunity to grow the sport. The current Argentine Int'l Series has four "foreign" riders competing over several weeks, how hard would it be to bring another 12 for one weekend!! And what an opportunity for the locals to boost interest in the sport, they already have a good base of riders to work with and a World Title event would take it to the next level. This formula could be used in the future to help raise the level of the sport in other countries too. An event of this stature would do nothing but good in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the US. One non European race a year would be a win win for everyone if done properly. Unquestionably the key would be proper support and funding from the authorities. Is it realistic? I hope so, but that's the big question isn't it.

    Australia 2008/2009

That's all I could find and with it being a club event it's probably all that's available. Don Edit: I'm sure that with the proper contacts there is more detail available from most clubs. I just no longer have time to pursue it to that level. Don

    South Africa 2008

While on the topic of South Africa, do any of you guys know more about the status of the sport down there? Seems to me that with only 9 riders they are either facing extinction or are starting to rebuild the sport. Hopefully the latter. A couple of years ago on the Motorsport South Africa site I saw some references to another club affiliated with them but there wasn't any details. Any body know anything more?

    Canadian Speedway

Yes, Puma23 is correct. The Canadian Title was rained out at Welland on July 19. It was initially hoped to reschedule it at Welland on Aug 2 but that didn't work out and it was then tentatively rescheduled for Aug 31 at Paris but that date too was not workable. This is what the CMA refers to as the Speedway "short track" Title. The CMA also granted "National" status to 5 of the rounds held at Welland and 1 Longtrack at Belleville that crown an overall CMA National Champion. Speedway is mixed in with all the CMA Dirt Track classes at these events compared to the "Short Track Speedway" Title which is Speedway only. You can find more details at motospeedway.net or at the CMA website. Regards, DonM

    Ukrainian Speedway

Thanks again Romaulds. Interesting stuff and hopefully they will be able to grow both areas in the future. I had a look with Google Earth and found possible tracks in Poltava and Sevastopol but nothing in Chernomorsk but if it was just built last year the photos are probably older than that.

    Ukrainian Speedway

Thanks for the update Romualds. Do you know what the rest of the fixtures look like now? One more question, do you know anything about the Poltava and Crimea areas? Riders from those locations are competing in some events but I've not seen any evidence of either area having an actual track. Thanks, DonM

    Ukrainian Speedway

Thanks Vicar, glad you like it. Archiving the results is my main goal. It's an attempt to fill some of the hole left when the World Speedway site went dormant. I can't imagine any one person being able to properly replicate that fantastic site and it utterly amazes me how Marcin pulled it off all those years.
