    Smallmead Stadium

Think you'll find that many Reading fan's recollection wouldn't be that Uno "had Billy off", more that Billy tried twice to ride through Johansson's leg... Which seemed to be about 8 feet long! He could almost sit mid track and block the inside line with his left leg (ok might be exaggerating a little!), and Billy got a little frustrated!

    Bring Back Reading Racers Speedway

As I also started a thread without realising you had already done this John, I thought I would combine the 2 and paste Emma's initial statements, containing full details below... BRING BACK READING SPEEDWAY Smallmead stadium closed in 2008 leaving Reading without a Speedway team and The Racers without a track. I am working to set up an official supporters’ trust aiming to get The Racers back on track. After spending many hours reading various post on Facebook ("bring back reading racers") where fans had been reminiscing over their Monday nights at Smallmead, their friendly banter over heat 15 and discussing their favourite line-up, this brought back my own childhood memories of watching The Racers, the atmosphere was always electric . I am looking to raise funds to help set up the trust using supporters direct http://www.supporters-direct.org/ unfortunately they do not get funding from the government to help out speedway as they do for other sports. This will cost around £1500. Once we have the trust in place with a full working committee we can look into finding land, sponsorship etc. So please show your support and donate to get the racers back on track, support our fight because above all else I believe the Racers still have a place in the world of Speedway today. FOLLOWING Saturday's meeting at the Holiday Inn, Reading fans are now looking to set-up a Supporters Trust to aid their hopes of bringing speedway back to the town. £1500 is required to start the Trust so a Go Fund Me account has been set-up to assist with this. Go to the page for more details and to make a contribution - https://www.gofundme.com/82ur42bn Join the Facebook group: bring back reading racers for updates or look out for news on the website http://www.readingspeedway.com/ Other monies raised will go towards the Reading Racers trust fund. We have already raised £216.96

I know a trainer who rehomes all his retired greyhounds. I also know for a fact there are trainers who will phone the rescues and say "I'm gonna shoot this dog if you don't come and get it". And I don't believe that there aren't some trainers who can't be arsed to do either...
  7. Please read the following...We thought the rest of the Speedway World should know what we are trying to do. The Cradley Supporters Trust have very kindly been advising on making the best use of Supporters Direct. Someone has to try to get something off the ground... Watch this space! 8. So the rule was gone by 78? I thought I remembered Bo Petersen being warned or excluded for it in the early 80s. Maybe it was just my Dad saying he should have been.

    Swindon Stadium

I sincerely hope you get your new stadium, but couldn't help but notice the similarities... This was December 2007. READING owner Mark Legg reports that the Racers could finally be in their new stadium next summer. The Racers will start their Premier League campaign in March 2008 at Smallmead, their home for the past 32 years. But, with the stadium lease (currently covering six months at a time) expiring on June 30, Reading are then planning to switch to the new site a few hundred yards away in Island Road. Plans for the £10million venue, which also includes greyhound racing and a casino, have already been approved by Reading Borough Council and tenders for the initial groundwork have already gone out. Legg said: “I had a meeting with the stadium owners Stadia UK recently and they inform me that work should start on the new site in January 2008. “After the land is prepared the first parts of the site to be complete will be the speedway facilities, e.g the track. We will start the new season at Smallmead in March, but if things go to plan it is anticipated we should be able to move into our new home and start racing there at the end of June. “It will mean we will have to operate from a few temporary buildings for a while, such as the bar, restaurant, hospitality, toilets etc, although having spoken to the stadium owners it shouldn’t pose a problem as they will be good-quality temporary units. “The track that is being laid will be 10 metres bigger than our current track and Malcolm (Holloway) is having a big input into that along with Colin Meredith. “Fingers crossed that the building work goes to plan and the weather doesn’t interfere with things and we can move it all over lock, stock and barrel next June. It may mean we have to take a two week break during the season as we’ll have to dismantle the pits, starting gate and safety fence. All of that will all be going with us, along with other equipment from Smallmead. “A year on from that in June 2009 the whole thing will be complete. We’ll then have a new stadium with fantastic facilities, which will be something we can all be very proud of. “It looks like the long wait for the new home of the Reading Racers is finally over. “One other thing we will be looking to do is to hold a Farewell to Smallmead meeting during the season. We haven’t decided what format that will be yet and obviously we can’t give any exact timings at this stage – but we want to make sure we go out with a bang.”

    Swindon 2015

I didn't know, but I suspected that was the case, certainly was at Reading.

yes but they can't possibly be seen to be encouraging people to use cars, whatever next?! We all have to be pushed into using our amazing public transport system...

    Swindon 2015

We were told in 2007 that the new stadium would be built next to the existing stadium, we could watch it go up and move into it albeit unfinished in July 08. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this similar to what is supposed to be happening at Blunsdon?

As a Reading fan, forgive me for mentioning Deja Vu... in an extremely cynical manner.

    Swc Race-off

Didn't Scott refuse to ride for GB because of the issues over having to wear GB's sponsors when riding for GB?
  15. Is there only a meeting steward if its on TV? I havent been to much Speedway since Reading closed, but I keep very much in touch and I didn't know there was one!. And as far as I've always understood, the ref can't call it off without discussions with managers and captains. So why can the Steward? And does anyone know who the Steward was tonight?
  16. And tbf I don't criticize Pearson much, but his sometimes childlike admiration of Darcy does grate sometimes...
  17. What and who is the meeting steward??? And yes, isn't Darcy wonderful for giving an interview?

    Norrie Or Mads

While I havent seen Mads ride this year so cant comment on his effort, nobody has explained how he can be fit to ride abroad on sunday and tuesday, but cant ride here on monday.

    Back To Basics

yeah well done, we used to have that hanging on the wall when i grew up!! As far as the league points goes, I don't think there are many sports that have such a home advantage as Speedway does, so I don't think its a bad thing to address that. I agree it's one of the better ideas in recent years.

    Most Bizarre Exclusions......

I could be wrong about this, but wasn't Wiggy excluded from a race in a test match (i think at Oxford)? It was his 6th race and his 6th win, and he wheelied down the straights on the last lap. yeah, not attempting to race... Someone tell me if I've got my facts wrong. If I'm right, then surely it was Frank Ebdon in the box?
  21. I don't think we should moan about Nige and Kelv too much, you can't please all the people all of the time. But as everyone else is.. The one that annoys me is when Kelvin says that 2 riders are "battling it out for 2nd and 3rd". No they're not, they are battling for 2nd, neither of them wants to finish 3rd, surely?
  22. I remember a test match at Oxford, for some reason Simon Wigg lent Alun Rossiter his bike for one important race. As Roscoe sat on Wigg's bike at the pit gate, and went to pull away, Wigg shouted "Go steady!" loud enough for everyone on turns 3 & 4 to hear.
  23. So the averages are obviously gonna be affected as many people have stated. When do the 1st green sheets comes out? and when will the riders change riding positions? Is the Prem league at the same time or is there a difference because of the differing circumstances?

    Hawksbee And Jacobs - Talksport

These 2 interviewed Ryan Sullivan a few years ago, and said; "Our producer has told us to ask if you've ever been in the lead, then been overtaken and not won the race?" If they are prepared to ask a guest an insulting question like that, it pretty much shows their contempt. Is Nigel Pearson still connected to this station?
