Hi Railway End- I think I used to stand on the opposite side from you, I know after a couple of years they changed where the starting gate was-I reckon you must have been on the side where there was glass fronted bar(a club you had to pay to get in) upstairs above the terrace.I was at the side where there was seating and then a bar behind the stand(separate little building)-I even joined the Newport County Supporters Club to get in.Great days-I even liked Whitbread Trophy beer then-aaagh!!! I recall when Wayne Briggs came with Edinburgh in Prov. Lge.-it was the second meeting I ever saw-Wasps won 42-36 I think(July 1964??).They were a good team , and good as Wayne was I reckon George Hunter was the star of that team
-
Guess we must have been in the same crowd that night Railway End-hard to believe its that long ago.
-
I think I saw Wayne involved in a bad accident in Newport in 1964-perhaps a Britain v Overseas Test Match--and I think he was never the same after
-
Anyone know where Bob is-he was a rising star in the late 60's-seem to recall him getting his first max. Don't know what happened to him-I think he went somewhere else after Newport-Swindon??,Poole??.Anybody in Forumland know
-
Railway end -do you know what happened to the other second halfers, Peter Harris,Alan Jones and Fred Powell-do they still live locally??
-
Yes but who is the tallest guy on the list.Seriously was glad to see Derek Timms name-I recall him for CH -anyone know where Derek is these days??
-
Thanx guys-after Bob left Newport were all the other teams Div 2-where is he now, I thought he could have made it as a Div 1 rider because he was very competitive with the Wasps Brit Lge. teamn 1965/66. A great trier in my view.
-
Thanx dantodan-its a great website one of the best around-I reeally enjoyed the visit.
-
I agree with your approach Chunky-also looking at the list brought back some good memories.Thanx for starting this thread.
-
Hi speedyguy-don't know where to start, I'm floating out here in planet Canada and there seems to be folk more plugged in to these things in UK-good thought tho'!!
-
As I figured, judging by the number of posts not too many folks have as fond memories of Somerton as they do of Waterden Road or The Firs, or Custom House.I would have been better to have titled the item "gay riders at Somerton" or even better who was the tallest gay rider to appear at Somerton(not Graham Miles tho')!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Thanx for a wonderul website-really enjoyed the Yarmouth entry-is the stadium still there??
-
Can't someone find out-this is really weird.
-
Is Gary Middleton dead ???
-
Frigbo-this is v. interesting-it sounds like people have died that I was unaware of-do you plan to post this data when done-I realise it must be a massive job-names there I haven't thought of for years e.g. Fred Collier. Is it true that Col Cottrell has passed away??
-
Surely Graham Coombes isn't dead-he's real young-sorry to see Brian Craven died at a very youing age
-
I know Bert has passed away-but what about the other two-did Bob ever recover from that terrible accident in -was it 58??
-
Danny also made the World Final one year I think.
-
Good for Danny with his artificial leg-wish he could get a few mill from Paul McCartney instead of the evil woman!!Good on you Dan always a class act..
-
Anybody have any views on this-JS went for many years, but also Gordon McGregor was riding in 1950 I think or thereabouts for Motherwell, and I saw him in 1970 riding for Doncaster Dragons. Both these guys had very long careers-are you aware of anyone who can match then in this regard-I just also thought of Ronnie Moore-he started in 50 or 51 and was riding in the early seventies but he had a five year break in there 64-68 I think.
-
Billy was a great rider, but career longevity wise both Squibb and McGregor beat him out I think.
-
That's great that Lew Coffin is still with us-he must be a great age now!!
-
I think its gotta be Jim Squibb-but have learned some interesting thing from these posts tho' .Fascinating altogether.
-
Vonny, don't forget to tell your dad how fondly he is remembered by many Newport fans-including this one here in Canada, give him my regards and tell him I still recall his final ever race (against Clive Featherby)!!It was on Friday July 9th 1965 and my program shows Penniket, Paulson,Featherby(ret), Bradley(f) was the way it finished. It was heat 6, your dad had one ride previous to that and finished 2nd to Billy Bales. All the best and enjoy the reunion.

Wasn't Eddie Reeves with Oxford in 64- I thought Colin Mckee might have been in the PL and for sure George Major was with CH.Therefore could it be 1963.On second thoughts Colin might have stayed back in Aussie in 64
