KenB1 23 Posted January 4, 2007 (edited) I remember being at this match and many others, had to rush back to the station to get the train to Ashford, the from Ashford to Hastings and Hastings to Eastbourne This was a regular thing and I was still at school, Wouldn't let kids do that on their own nowadays! Ross was just briliant and Graeme Stapleton was inconsistant, Graham Smith was a very hard rider. Ted was goin well and the KOC saw him and Mr Dugard inspect the fence against those Eagles, Although the Crusaders had a poor season having won the league the year before, it was great times! Paulco 7,077 Posted January 5, 2007 While we are on a Canterbury theme - i made my one and only trip to Kingsmead in May 1978 . I was just a teenager so the memory of that night has faded . But the match concerned was a Canterbury v Glasgow league match . It was on the same day as Ipswich beat Arsenal 1-0 in the Fa cup final cause i remember watching that in the hotel . Glasgow , i remember got a hiding , 50-28 i think and i'm sure there was an altercation on track between Merve Janke and one of the home riders . Can anybody give me details of the points scorers that night if possible . The following day we went to Mildenhall and suffered an even bigger doing 55-23 i think with Derek Richardson being the only race winner .
KevH 257 Posted January 5, 2007 Paulco, the meeting was on 6th May, 1978, and Canterbury won 53-25. Canterbury Steve Koppe 4:12:0 Les Rumsey 4:10:1 Graham Clifton 5:9:3 Graham Banks 4:8:0 Barney Kennett 4::7:2 Brendan Shilleto 4:5:1 Bob Spelta 1:2:1 Glasgow Merv Janke 6:9:0 Derek Richardson 4:7:0 Benny Rourke 6:5:0 Colin Farquharson 4:2:1 Steve Lawson 2:2:0 Mick Newton 4:0:0 Hope that brings a few memories back, it sure does for me as we were on the way to our second league title. And your memory serves you well on the score at Mildenhall the following day.

Gary Cottham (senior) rode in that match for the Crusaders..: keep meaning to ask him, was it his first match..?? Does anyone else know..?? The night you refer to (19/8/1972) was Gary's third match. He made his debut at Birmingham on the 7th.
