Denny Pyeatt Memorial Trophy

Reading's last meeting of 2007 is staged on Monday with the much delayed Denny Pyeatt meeting finally getting the green light.

 

The very detailed Press release follows:

 

Promoter Malcolm Holloway has assembled an interesting sixteen-rider field for the twenty-heat event and clearly, once again, has the future of the club in mind. He explained: ‘There will be several riders on show that interest me. I am always looking to the future of the Racers and this will give them all an opportunity to showcase their talents.

 

 

 

‘I’m pleased to be staging this meeting, having had it postponed on 2 July and then having had to re-schedule it to accommodate the re-run of the Knock-Out Cup semi-final versus Swindon. Denny was a popular member of the Reading side in 1981 and 1982, and it was a tragedy that he lost his life when aged just twenty-four.’

 

 

 

Admission prices for Monday’s gala meeting are as per normal: Adults £15, Concessions £10 and Children (Under 15 years) £5, whilst Kids (Under 11 years) pay just £1 if accompanied by a paying adult.

 

 

 

DENNY PYEATT MEMORIAL LINE-UP:

 

 

BEN BARKER

DATE OF BIRTH: 10 March 1988, Truro, Cornwall.

SYNOPSIS: The British youngster continues to make firm progress in the Premier League and, largely speaking, has been one of few bright spots in a difficult season for Stoke. Although diminutive in stature, Barker has a flamboyant style, bags of determination and a sound ability to ride an array of racing lines.

 

 

 

CORY GATHERCOLE

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 2 December 1986, Irymple, Victoria, Australia.

 

MAJOR HONOURS: Western Australia State Champion: 2007; Victoria State Champion: 2007.

 

SYNOPSIS: Gathercole is the cousin of Australian speedway stalwart Leigh Adams and is in his debut British season. Riding as a second-string for the Isle of Wight, the youngster’s scores have been steadily mounting as the season has progressed and he is tipped for a big future.

 

 

 

NICKI GLANZ

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 6 January 1990, Swindon, Wiltshire.

 

SYNOPSIS: The Swindon-born speedster is the son of former Reading rider, Peter. He has enjoyed a very successful season with Plymouth in the Conference League; indeed, the seventeen-year-old has made some notable progress and, doubtless, will be targeting a Premier League berth in 2008.

 

 

 

PATRICK HOUGAARD

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 23 May 1989, Fredericia, Denmark.

 

SYNOPSIS: Despite not collecting high scores, the new Racers recruit has impressed so far at Smallmead. The Dane has an opportunity to further underline his potential on Monday evening, whilst also increasing his knowledge of the 307-metre Reading raceway.

 

 

 

BILLY LEGG

DATE OF BIRTH: 6 September 1988, Swindon, Wiltshire.

SYNOPSIS: Billy is, of course, the son of the current Reading club owner, Mark. Aged nineteen, he is a talented youngster who has made some real progress in recent seasons. Is very familiar with the Smallmead arena and will, no doubt, be hoping to catch the eye in Monday night’s event.

 

 

MARK LEMON

DATE OF BIRTH: 12 February 1973, Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia.

 

MAJOR HONOURS: Victoria State Champion: 1993, 1996.

 

SYNOPSIS: The current Reading skipper is one of the Elite Leagues most underrated second strings and will surely be among the front-runners on Monday. Lemon is one of the most experienced campaigners in the line-up and will most certainly be calling upon his array of track craft.

 

 

 

SHAWN McCONNELL

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 26 April 1959, Anaheim, California, USA.

 

SYNOPSIS: The American speedway legend is in the twilight of his career, but still rides regularly in his homeland. The affectionately nicknamed ‘Mad Dog’ is renowned for his trademark flair and entertainment is guaranteed when he takes to the track.

 

 

 

ROBERT MEAR

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 12 January 1989, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

 

SYNOPSIS: The talented British youngster has enjoyed a wonderful year with Rye House in the Conference League and will, no doubt, be aiming for a Premier League berth in 2008. Mear has a neat style and plenty of speed, so it will be interesting to see how he does on Monday evening.

 

 

 

CHRIS MILLS

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 29 March 1983, Chelmsford, Essex.

 

SYNOPSIS: The British youngster will be well known to Reading fans after his appearances for the Racers in previous years. Mills currently represents King’s Lynn in the Premier League and is something of a Smallmead specialist.

 

 

CHRIS NEATH

DATE OF BIRTH: 29 January 1982, Worcester, Hereford & Worcestershire.

 

SYNOPSIS: The experienced British rider and current Reading No. 8 must rank amongst the favourites on Monday evening. Neath has, once again, helped to lead the Rye House charge for honours in 2007 and has also impressed when called upon by the Racers.

 

 

 

CHARLIE SAUNDERS

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 14 August 1990, Swindon, Wiltshire.

 

SYNOPSIS: Renowned continental grass-tracker, who has had limited speedway experience with Swindon Sprockets in the British Academy League. However, he is a natural at grass-track’s sister sport, as emphasized by some very good performances for the Sprockets earlier this season.

 

 

 

CHRIS SCHRAMM

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 30 May 1984, Maldon, Essex.

SYNOPSIS: The former Reading rider is well known to fans at Smallmead and can expect a warm reception on Monday. Currently rides for Newport in the sport’s second tier and has notched up a respectable average this term for the Welsh side.

 

 

 

FILIP SITERA

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 18 April 1988, Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic.

 

SYNOPSIS: Nephew of the iconic racing brothers, Jan and Vaclav Verner, the young Czech is one of the hottest prospects in world speedway and is sought after by many clubs. Sitera has just confirmed that he will be competing in the 2008 Australian Championships and is, no doubt, a star of the future.

 

 

 

ROB SMITH

DATE OF BIRTH: 18 February 1988, Eastbourne, East Sussex.

 

SYNOPSIS: The brother of former junior rider, Phil, began the current campaign with Boston, before a mid-season switch to Plymouth. He has since illuminated the Devils’ score-charts with an array of impressive tallies, including home and away paid maximums versus Sittingbourne.

 

 

 

KRZYSZTOF STOJANOWSKI

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 5 January 1979, Zielona Gora, Poland.

 

SYNOPSIS: The experienced Pole plies his trade for the Isle Of Wight in the Premier League and has enjoyed a productive third successive campaign with the Islanders. Stojanowski has the ability to ride large and small tracks, which will stand him in good stead at Smallmead on Monday evening.

 

 

 

SIMON WALKER

 

DATE OF BIRTH: 19 February 1980, Bristol, Avon.

 

SYNOPSIS: The Somerset rider is a popular competitor in the Premier League and will light up the terraces at Smallmead with his flamboyant style. Walker is a real racer, who will fight for every point and could, potentially, spring a surprise on Monday evening.

I must admit that "Renowned" or not I have never heard of the chap - and as for being a tip for the top, I'd better restrict that to riders I have heard of

 

Filip Sitera I have heard very good things about - as well as seeing his scores compare favourably to Sam Simota's, he was tipped as one to watch a fair while back now by my old mate Christopher CL Rules Brown. Like him or loathe him the man Brown generally has a good eye for a talented rider.

I would have gone to this had I not been away on Monday. It's always good to see Shawn McConnell ride, and Sitera has been "bigged up" on the Swindon forum recently so would have been worth a view also.

Looks like being the CL discovery of the year this season and doesn't seem to have grabbed the headlines some of his performances deserve.

He's made significant progression into the CL top ten.

 

Nicki Glanz too looks lthe sort of bloke we should keep an eye on, and I am pleased we will see these two.

Was going to come along to this but I have to say £15 for that line-up is making me have serious reservations.

 

The overall intention of the meeting is good, but why not charge £10 a head and they might get themselves a decent crowd in. £15 for that field really doesn't sit well with me.

Robert Mear must be one of the most improved riders in the country this season. Will be interesting to see how he shapes against some higher quality riders and away from the comfort of Rye House.

 

Good to see Shawn McConnell making the trip over, he always seems to provide plenty of entertainment at Brighton.

LOYALTY BONUS FOR SUPPORTERS!

 

 

 

Ahead of the Denny Pyeatt Memorial at Smallmead Stadium on Monday 22 October, Racers’ boss Malcolm Holloway has decided to reduce admission charges by way of a big ‘thank you’ to all the fans who have stuck by the club this season.

 

 

 

Holloway explained: ‘We have come through a lot in the last few months and the fans have stood by the club. I just wanted to do something to thank everyone for their loyalty. We had already indicated that normal admission prices would apply for the meeting in honour of Denny, but, having thought about it, I have decided to cut the prices for our supporters.’

One thing i want to know is, where the hell is this German guy that Malc has been going on about, i don't see him anywhere in the line up, but not to worry with have the amazing Billy 'only riding, cos my dad owns the team' Legg.

 

Not to worry, from what i can see there are some exciting guys in the rest of the line up, its a pity that many of the heats will be one sided, but i hope that i can be proved wrong, and that this meet will set reading up for a decent enough stint in the PL.

 

It's a pity that many of the team are not there, but i know one that wasn't even asked which makes me wonder if the rest even where??
