Press Release by Weymouth c/o BSPA:

WEYMOUTH: ISLE OF WIGHT V WILDCATS (NL) - PREVIEW

MONDAY JULY 26, 2010

Following the home win against Plymouth Devils on Saturday night the Weymouth Weyline Wildcats travel across the Solent for the third time this season to take on the Isle of Wight Islanders in National league action at the Smallbrook Stadium on Tuesday evening 7.30pm start.

The two previous trips have proved fruitless for the Wildcats losing 56-38 in April in the Pete Redfern Memorial Trophy fixture followed by a loss in the Knock-out Cup in early May 51-39. The Islanders have just recruited ex-Cat Lee Smethills following his release from Plymouth and also include two other former Cats Danny Warwick and Brendan Johnson. They are lead by Nick Simmons with Ben Hopwood in the middle order and reserve pairing of experienced Dean Felton and Tom Hill.

Wildcats team remains unchanged from Saturday night’s victory over Plymouth, new signing Adam McKinna said after Saturday night’s fixture “I’ve always been slightly better suited to the big tracks so hopefully I’ll be able to go there and get out front, a much bigger track is always much easier to pass on but down here at Weymouth the one pass I made on Saturday night was just so close wheel to wheel and it’s not what I’m used to, I’m used to bigger tracks and on the Isle of Wight at least there is a bit of room to manoeuvre.”

Wildcats will be looking for an away win over fellow bottom of the table strugglers to leap frog the Islanders in the league table. The return fixture is at the Wessex Stadium on Friday evening 7.15pm start time.

Heat Results

Isle of Wight win the toss taking gates 2&4.

Heat 01: Simmons, Smethills, McKinna, 5-1, 5-1, 71.6

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Lee Smethills, Byron Bekker, Adam McKinna

Comments: Even break but Bekker away from the start. Looked slow going into 3rd/4th bend though, think he forgot to turn on his fuel! Simmons stormed round outside, and whilst Bekker fiddled with his tap, he impeded his team-mate McKinna, and let Smethills into 2nd place. McKinna got ahead on next lap, but Smethills kept it going to earn a debut paid win. Bekker kept going until the final lap, then retired.

Heat 02: Hill, Chessell, Felton, Andrews, 4-2, 9-3, 72.5

Line Up: Dean Felton, Tom Hill, Richard Andrews, Luke Chessell

Comments: Wildcats away from the tapes first, but Hill on a charge and into the lead on 4th bend. Felton stalking quietly in 3rd, but making no impression, whilst Hill romps to the win.

Heat 03: Warwick, Johnson, Brown, 5-1, 14-4, 69.1

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, Tom Brown, Gary Cottham

Comments: Flier from Warwick, whilst Cottham was left 5 yards from the tapes. Johnson then squeezed around the outside of ex-iow rider Brown to give the I.o.W. a fantastic start! Brown was moaning about the track at the start of the meeting, and looked completely un-interested once he had been passed. Cottham retired.

Heat 04: Hopwood, Cockle, Hill, Chessell, 4-2, 18-6, 69.5

Line Up: Ben Hopwood, Tom Hill, James Cockle, Luke Chessell

Comments: Weymouth make the gate again, but both Islanders get past their respective counterparts on 1st bend to be on a 4-2. Simple after that really, Hopwood looking very sharp.

Heat 05: Johnson, Warwick, McKinna, 5-1, 23-7, 70.5

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, BYRON BEKKER, Adam McKinna

Comments: Bekker on a Tactical.

Good gate from the putside pair of Johnson and Bekker, but its Warwick who leaps out from the inside to take the lead, just keeping the tactical Bekker behind him, allowing Johnson to take the quicker outside line. Bekker harried Johnson all the way, before sliding off on his own on 2nd to last bend, before remounting and retiring.

Heat 06: Cockle, Simmons, Smethills, Andrews, 3-3, 26-10, 71.3

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Lee Smethills, James Cockle, Richard Andrews

Comments: Great gate from Smethills to lead, with Simmons penned in 3rd place by Cockle. Nearly a big moment on 3/4th bend between top 3, before Cockle goes past Smethills into lead, quickly followed by Simmons. Great race between those 2, but Cockle held on, Smethills some way back in third.

Heat 07: Brown, Hopwood, Felton, Cottham, 3-3, 29-13, 71.2

Line Up: Ben Hopwood, Dean Felton, Tom Brown, Gary Cottham

Comments: Weymouth gated, but Hopwood into 2nd place, before Felton outside of Cottham on back straight. Hopwood and Brown tangle on back straight, but stay upright, Hopwood never more than a bike length from Brown. Couldn't get past though, 3-3.

Heat 08: Smethills, MCKINNA, Hill, Chessell, 4-4, 33-17, 71.5

Line Up: Lee Smethills, Tom Hill, ADAM MCKINNA, Luke Chessell

Comments: McKinna on a tactical ride.

Decent start from McKinna, but Smethills nudged him wide. Hill quickly into 3rd place to share the heat. McKinna getting closer and closer to Smethills though, before tailing off.

Heat 09: Johnson, Cockle, Warwick, Andrews, 4-2, 37-19, 69.6

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Brendan Johnson, James Cockle, Richard Andrews

Comments: Even break, but Warwick and Andrews left very little room on the outisde by the others! Johnson out in front though, and comfortably holding off Cockle, looking much, much quicker than recent weeks.

-- Short Interval --

Heat 10: Brown, Simmons, Smethills, Cottham, 3-3, 40-22, 71.8

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Lee Smethills, Tom Brown, Gary Cottham

Comments: Brown away first, clamping Simmons on white line, causing Simmons to cut back to the outside line. Simmons very close to passing Brown on 2nd bend, laps 2 and 3, before running out of time. Smethills just held off a hard charging Cottham on the line by half a bike!

Heat 11: Felton, Bekker, McKinna, Hopwood, 3-3, 43-25, 71.4

Line Up: Ben Hopwood, Dean Felton, Byron Bekker, Adam McKinna

Comments: Felton away like a flash, with Hopwood and Bekker at the back! Great scrap between them, passign and re-passing, all the time getting closer to Felton, who held on very well. Bekker with a audacious dive up the inside of his team-mate, that almost allowed Hopwood through as well!

Sponsored by

Heat 12: Warwick, Brown, Hill, Andrews, 4-2, 47-27, 70.6

Line Up: Danny Warwick, Tom Hill, Tom Brown, Richard Andrews

Comments: Warwick away superbly, whilst Andrews was rolling, and stopped just as the tapes rose, justice as he was stranded waiting for Christmas! Strung out after that, 4-2. Credit to Ref for letting it go as well, a lot would have brought that back for an unsatisfactory start.

Heat 13: Hopwood, Simmons, Bekker, Cockle 5-1, 52-28, 70.4

Line Up: Nick Simmons, Ben Hopwood, Byron Bekker, James Cockle

Comments: Hopwood away well, followed by cockle, but Simmons comes through into 2nd. Fantastic battle between Simmons and Bekker over next 2 laps, going inside and outside each other at least 4 times, never more than a blanket apart, and seperated by a tyre width on the line, Simmons just getting the verdict in 2nd, brilliant, brilliant race, get the DVD (nice plug for T2TV!)

Heat 14: Johnson, Felton, Chessell, Cottham, 5-1, 57-29, 70.9

Line Up: Brendan Johnson, Dean Felton, Gary Cottham, Luke Chessell

Comments: Islanders gate, and stay there.

Sponsored by

Heat 15: Simmons, Brown, Cockle, Johnson, 3-3, 60-32, 70.5

Line-up: Brendan Johnson, Nick Simmons, James Cockle, Tom Brown

Comments: Weymouth win toss taking gates 2&4.

Simmons away from gate 3, Johnson left at the back. He then locked up on 1st bend second time round to fall back. Brown really pressurising Simmons at the front, with Cockle ready to pounce as well. Simmons too good though, for a great win.

Despite the scoreline, this was a very good meeting.Plenty of passing, and closeness that kept you guessing.Track extremely slick and a bit dusty. Not sure I understood the Weymouth logic in using McKinna for double points in Ht8,when both Cockle and Brown had just won races.

I have to admit to being ''over the moon'' with Brendans performance. :approve:

A superb effort, although I didnt understand why he wanted gate 1 in Ht15.He had looked so confident in his other rides.Elbows to the fore in the 1st turn!

The major difference in him is down to one reason only.Last Friday (23rd),he was finally given the all clear from the Hospital.Thats almost 12 months since his bad accident. It has made such a difference, even on a day to day basis.Hopefully with such a weight lifted from his shoulders,he can now move onwards and upwards.

Overall,a good meeting with a very good crowd to boot.

Bingo ! Well done boys .

You should be happy with your prediction of if newport finish top and isle of wight finish bottom you would eat pavs pants

You are just lucky that our promoter would sign pavs pants if someone told him that they have had premier league experience

Just finished editing this super match, the score certainly didnt do the meeting justice. But at the end of the night, those "pussycats" well and truly had their tales tucked between their legs. Well done IOW all 1-7 rode as a unit and scored well. Heat 11 probably one of the best races of the season. Super stuff.

DVD's are ready!

Didnt think anyone would remember that one Wessex boy!! :( LOL

I was clinging to the hope that Newport would not win the league....now, thanks to the changes, Ive got two hopes!

Good effort by all the IOW boys, but lets see how we cope in next few meetings before getting too carried away...and before starting my diet, prior to my feast fit for a whole family !!

No way would we let you forget that one Flyer.

Buxton might have given you a get out in the match at Newport last Friday (bloody brilliant match by the way)but you are most likely to be saved by our Wildcats  who look certainties for the wooden spoon. Last chance to have any chance at all of avoiding it on Friday I think.

Still, Pav's Pants are not off the menu just yet awhile. :D
