Kent - Kent Laurels 1/7/13

Recommended Posts

this coming monday sees the kent laurels being staged at central park. ironically the laurels was the first meeting i ever went to at wimbledon in 1968 and also the last in 2005. the kent variety will be the first meeting i've missed at central park this season. my days of going to individual meetings are long gone, apart from special one off events like the british gp or the rico memorial.

The once famous London classic, as staged at Wimbledon for many years and won by many of speedway's greatest stars, gets a new National League look in Sittingbourne.

The Laurels started at Wimbledon in 1939 when it was won by Wilbur Lamoreaux. It resumed in 1946 as a pairs event when the winners were Tommy Price and Bob Wells, but reverted to individual status in 1947 when Vic Duggan was the winner. In that time some of the sport's greatest names of the post-war era won the event.

It carried on regularly until Wimbledon's closure in 1991 and resumed again at Conference League level between 2002-05 when Wayne Barrett and Mark Burrows were winners.

For details of the competition from 1953 onwards (when it became the Laurels/WJ Cearns Trophy) see:

http://www.kentkings...e/20130625.html

Here's details of the prestige Wimbledon Stadium event winners prior to 1953:

1939 Wilbur Lamoreaux

1946 Tommy Price & Bob Wells (best pairs event)

1947 Vic Duggan

1948 Jack Parker

1949 - 1950 not held

1951 Aub Lawson

1952 Ronnie Moore

The names in bold indicate they were Wimbledon riders.

Well done Simon Lambert,a right royal tussle in the Grand Final with Steve Boxall.Boxall fastest rider on the night but could not find a way past Simon in Final.Kasper Lykke and Chris Schramm (when his bike didn`t let him down)looked good all evening.

Sounds like a good meeting and a fitting finale. Hard on Boxall after being unbeaten in the qualifiers, but thems the rules. I'm not a fan of these qualifying/semi meetings. The best rider on the night doesn't always win.

Congratulations to Simon Lambert
