Building A Bike

Recommended Posts

Afternoon all.

A bit of a technical one here (hope I'm posting in the right section). Being a bike nut and a handy mechanic, I'm planning on building myself a speedway bike from scratch as my next project. Although I know all the essential parts I need (frame, fuel tank, seat, forks etc), I could do with some installation instructions on bolts, washers etc and how everything fits together. I've trekked through the internet but can't find any guidance. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any diagrams or websites out there? Recommended suppliers?

Thanks in advance :t:

Hi,

Building up a bike is pretty straight forward but you need to make sure all the bits you get are compatible and the setting up of things needs a bit of knowledge. There are different numbered diamonds and while I've no 1st hand experience, I know people that have had trouble getting clutches and chains to fit when swapping.

I don't know of any technical websites that will help you but the 'Speedway racing for sale/ wanted' section of this forum may be helpful as the 'engine rebuild ' section is the place for technical queries.

Bolt kits are available from speedway suppliers.

John Carpenter at www.speedwaybikes.co.uk is a good source of spares and very helpful.

If as your user name suggests you are based near Poole then Max Richards at Pegasus speed needs is also very helpful. He does the spares van at Poole. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, will have a look. Just can't believe Haynes don't do a manual or there's no specialist website or anything. Oh well.

Although I'm a Pirates fan I'm actually from just outside Manchester so should be an Ace (long story) but will be down for my holidays next few weeks so will check the van out while I'm at Wimbourne Road.

Thanks again

Good luck with your build. What standard of bike are you intending to build and are you intending to compete on it? Are you looking at building with new or used parts.

Often with using used parts the sum of the parts is normally more expensive than buying a complete machine.

I've never built a bike from scratch but have spent a lot of time working on my sons so if you have any specific queries during your build on how things fit etc let me know.

Thank you for the advice. It might be that I buy a complete bike (made a few enquiries on here) and strip it down for a clean up/rebuild, making a note of how it comes apart so I know how to put it back together! Could then publish a "how to guide" as it seems rare as hens teeth.

I've done road racing before at club level but never had a shot on a speedway bike, despite speedway getting me into biking in the first place! Will use it just for pottering round Buxton (closest to me) and the other odd track day. Can you recommend anywhere?

Cheers :t:
