Gerhard Engine

Ahh right, but the more economical GTR won't beat the PJR BAR KARGER rocket ships, and if you don't beat them, you will be bankrupt, scoring anything below 5 points a meeting at PL level means you are getting into debt pretty quickly.

DO you honestly think that PL riders scoring five points a meeting can afford a PJR rocket ship? The aim of the GTR, obviously, is to be as competitive as a GM but with far less on-going costs.

They sure do, trouble is it's more than not a gullible sponsor who pays for them, and you are absolutely right, they cannot afford to run them, but they can afford £1300 for a set of kevlars and covers for two bikes.

Perhaps the answer is to Ban the PJR 'Rocket Ships' in the interests of a more level, and fairer, playing field for Riders and the Sport in general.

As soon as a run of the mill PL rider find a GTR works for him expect a few others to give it a go. It's al psychological and no legislation will make it work. I think Phil Rising is a little naive about how it'll work but equally, I can see it working for some riders - maybe not for those looking to get tot he top but certainly riders who have tried, realised they are not going to be a GP rider and are happy to have an easy life scoring steady points - your David Howes and riders like him dropping down to the PL.

Now obviously if it starts to work for them and Phil is right, you may start to find your Garritys, Kurtzs and Frickes use them too.

Let's look at the figures, paid for five points, £250, less insurance £20, engine running cost for 4 races £60, fuel+ oil £20, our of pocket diesel £25 on 200 mile round trip, clutch plates per meeting £25, most riders get tyres free, so outof the £105 profit, you've got to buy your two complete bikes, and van, then hope you don't bend or blow any of them up, earning anything below £500 a meeting is a waste of time.

You don't have any choice about buying new kevlars, unless your team gives you a team-colours suit. Even complete beginners have to cough up ~£550 for a current-regulation race suit.

That's not much, how do they survive, and do PL riders also pay engine tuners?

something like that , long stroke conrod short stroke piston , but you nee extra gaskets to make the extra length up or the piston hits the head , so effectively you have created an overbored long stroke

It's not the rod that needs changing, it's the flywheels. If using GM parts then longstoke flywheels in a shortstroke engine results in something like 547cc. Apparently.....

The Gerhard engine seems to be trialling well by harris and Lambert over in the uk. Performing well enough to encourage more then a few to purchase when they come on the market, especially if servicing costs are slashed.

And whilst not everyone can afford to pay for their GM engines to be highly tuned, its a fact that not every rider will be able to benefit from the tuning - ie not everyone can ride a highly tuned engine to its full potential.

Noticed PK was using a GTR tonight at Lakeside.

No better rider to develop it IMO hope his form will encourage all the doubters of merits of this engine and what is trying to be created here ,looked fast and easy to control though some of that is no doubt down to the most experienced rider in the EL.

not ban them . TWK , if the 20 hour guarantee on a Gerhard is correct , just make the other manufacturers offer the same . if that means going back to the drawing board to make their engines last 20 hours then so be it . NL can then use the old engines with a £2 throat restrictor fitted to the carb, and that will extend the engine life by reducing the power and stress ,, cant see any losers there
