  1. You joke, but this has been proven to be the single biggest mistake made at the AGM this time around. There is still very big question marks around certain riders being able to travel in and out of the country, especially with Poland calling the shots. We are a month away from the start of the season and there are quite a few teams scrambling round to try and get a team of 7 riders together... and rumours of other teams joining them with the likes of Klindt, Bewley, Kurtz, Holder etc possibly being stuck abroad - especially given riders like Vissing and others have been ruled out in recent weeks. Let’s not forget that Swindon pulled out of the season too in the Premiership which has made some riders available who otherwise wouldn’t of been. Some people called for it at the time and in hindsight it certainly seems the way to have gone. 6 man teams with 1 ‘rising star’ Brit. This could of been reviewed again at the end of the season then once the travel arrangements would likely be resolved for next season in 2022.

  2. I can’t stand Godfrey, but in this case fair play to him for standing his ground on this one. All too often in British Speedway promotors have caved and bowed down to rider demands, which is one of the reasons we are in the state we are in as a whole.

  3. Well if referees were quicker with the 2 mins and riders had to be at the gate and ready to start in that time, start marshal's were 'empowered' to be more strict with riders ignoring them when called in to start and riders anticipating that start did not lead to a re-start with re-fuelling, etc.. then curfews would become academic as a meeting would be run in the vast majority of cases well within the two hours... Also hi Bob haven't seen you for years!

  5. If anything beneficial comes out of all of this it might be speedway venues being forced to drag their toilet facilities into the 21st century.

  6. Sorry for hijacking the Scunthorpe thread with this... But... Another point to expand on my earlier point of 6 man teams, which makes the idea even more of an oversight in my opinion is that individual rider demands would be somewhat lowered in that they would go from competing in 4/5 races per meeting to potentially 5/6 (probably even 7 with rider replacement if that was in use). So using the likes of Jake Allen as an example, especially paired with a Premiership team, his earnings would be significantly higher than as it is currently. 1 less rider to find per team, riders earning more, what’s not to like?

  7. Yep. Very familiar with how the race unfolded. Actually I would say that Gundersen's move started on the previous turn when he took the widest line and generated the speed to enable the overtake on the next turn. We could all do screen grabs of riders making mistakes in World Finals...there are hundreds of them. It's what separates the winners from the also-rans. Why didn't Malcolm Simmons close the door on Peter Collins in 1976? Why did Bruce Penhall leave a gap for Michael Lee in 1980? Why didn't Kenny Carter clamp down on Bruce Penhall in 1982? The riders that make mistakes don't win World Finals....and the riders that get it right do win World Finals. It really is that simple. And that's why Erik Gundersen is a three-times champion and Lance King and Shawn Moran are not. I just don't see anything amiss in this race at all...it's as authentic a race as you ever likely to see. Passing, repassing, a momentary mistake and a brilliantly executed killer move from an all-time great. Why would Gundersen risk his neck in the deep dirt if his two opponents were paid off? And why would they make it difficult by outgating and passing him? It just doesn't stack up. And if the best evidence is that some bloke on the terracing at Halifax said it....well, what I would say to that is that he wouldn't be the first bloke in Yorkshire to bluff and bluster on and pretend he knows more than he does about something. Furthermore, if Gundersen was the type to pay off or seek the help of others, why then did his long--time teammate Jan O Pedersen deny him a maximum and an outright win in their last heat at the 1988 World Final and force him into a run-off with Nielsen? That was ripe for collusion, but it didn't happen. So, let's not spend much more time questioning Gundersen's integrity, he was as genuine a winner as any of us could ever hope for in a world final.

  11. Great to see this seasons race jackets on the club's twitter page, it's 1973 again! The retro approach is to be fully embraced by the management apparently. When you turn up for the first meeting in your flares and platform shoes, here's what you can expect: Wilson, Jessup & Boulger waiting in the wings to step up and replace injured/absent riders (riders drawing a pension to be allocated assessed averages of 5.00 by the SCB). Music played over the PA totally relevant to the era. (2019 stadium playlist will now be up to date and therefore retained). A packed stadium. Fans will see the 50p admission as great value for money. Bring it on!

  12. As HenryW has said, he didn’t have a positive test. He tested negative when travelling from Denmark to Poland and then had another negative test as a requirement to ride on Sunday. The result of which came back too late to be included in the line up for Sunday, much to the annoyance of Gorzow I think.

  13. I don't think Birkemose had a positive test. It sounded like it was just an admin mess up. They didn't submit the results of the negative test in time for him to be included in the team at the weekend.

  16. Spot on... It's been ran to Mickey Mouse rules for donkeys years so one more (wishful thinking), isn't going to make any difference to whether fans attend I would think... Pretty much a 'free pass' this year as fans will just want to see some racing.. Which riders make up the teams that race in front of them may differ from 'as advertised', but that's pretty usual even in 'normal years'....

  18. For me it is these little maybe forgotten or overlooked parts of a career that are interesting. Especially if it involves short lived tracks like Hastings and even more so Santry in Ireland. The sort of things that lead me to noticing something else interesting. Maybe Classic Speedway ignore such things, but I think it ok for something a bit less formal like the BSF

  20. King knew Moran was on his inside and was concentrating on Moran. Gundersen came from nowhere. It's as simple as that.

  21. I hate it! There’s never a reason for a meeting to take longer than 2 hours, unless there’s a serious accident. But even then, the time it takes to sort that out must be the interval and only 2 heats later

  22. correct. Although it also depends on the number of new Covid cases between now and then?! ps. I hear there's a meeting with Stadia UK tomorrow.

  24. I would tend to agree with this scenario as probable issues with Klindt & possibly others flying in & out of the country on higher than normal air fares plus the covid restrictions could mean places become available in the Premiership.

  31. Talking of shortened tracks, I asked former Brummies promoter Joe Thurley back in 2007 why the old Ladbroke Stadium, Perry Barr track was shortened from 350 yards to 330 in 1974. His reply was that it wasn't shortened, they'd just measured it properly!

  33. Ellis Perks has suddenly become very much in demand and it looks like his mind may be changed about riding again. However the current favourites to sign him appear to be a more Northern team than Redcar as they have a major sponsor prepared to finance the deal and cost of equipment and they would be saving more over the year not paying airfares for an overseas rider

  34. I'm with bt broadband but cancelled the sport because it went up from £6 to £10. I watched it thru the sky platform but I've also cancelled sky now. However, I'm still with bt for my broadband so can I watch it on my Amazon fire or a lap top thru an app?

  42. Have to agree. By far my favourite threads are those on years gone by, reminiscing/debating about favourite speedway eras (80s for me) and the great- and not so great- riders from those times.

  43. needs a good pits staff to get things moving along and known times for track grading and intervals. At Birmingham we achieved that and ran a slick presentation , had 10 min interval time for the kids to come out and have activities , ran MSDL 6 heats plus 125cc demos after heat 2, 4 and 6 and even had time for practice if we finished before the 10pm curfew . Just needs organisation and the right people in the jobs .
