  1. That’s always going to be the problem. There are not enough suitable standard riders to fill all team spaces with doubling up ditched. it would need to be 5 or 6 man teams to get anywhere near close enough for a suitable standard of rider to fill all teams.
  2. But a dreadful speedway presenter. fantastic news that the club is coming to the tapes this season. i wish them all the best. I hope I can make a visit sometime this season.
  3. Yea quite possibly. And similar that we don’t know what has been going on behind the scenes.
  4. If CVS could get things back up and running he would. I’ve not seen any indication he is no longer interested.
  5. Where on earth has the talk of Thorssell on a 4.5 average come from? he’s easily a heat leader in any team in the UK. Barmy.
  6. What makes you think CVS is not the right person to talk to them?m
  7. Ooops yea I forgot that Oxford team!
  8. Different times different strengths. Hardly any team came close to matching that 98 side that season. no team since the 80s has been anywhere close that level of dominance.
  9. Got to agree, although the Ipswich side of 98 would be very close.
  10. Not having a real number one will always sting a team in the top flight. besides Peterborough’s dads army side I can’t remember another side solidly packed doing well.
  11. Jeez, that was tough going. The rambling and silent pauses were excruciating. so many wasted opportunities. But good for the Workington fans to hear the news I’m sure.
  12. But folk ARE attending the GPs in much bigger numbers the world over and the Play offs always ensure much bigger crowds than usual. World finals always had also rans who qualified from the European states who hardly ever had a chance. No different to now. Speedway was much bigger in the 70s etc so of course it was an epic occasion. But let’s not pretend they offered superior racing to now. At least with the GPs you will get 10 or 11 chances to show world class speedway to the TV world. If we go back to the old final and qualifiers you would have empty stadiums for the qualifiers, maybe a little more interest for the semis but only one chance to really represent the best of the best. At least with the GPs you are guaranteed to see the vast majority of the best riders in the world 11 times. Plus of course there isn’t the mass amount of talent that we had in the 60 to 90s. can you imagine a one off world final with half the best riders missing due to an engine failure or tape exclusion and you get Kai Huckenbeck racing in Germany crowned world champion. A complete farce and absolutely worse than what we have now!
  13. Like the GP series is going anywhere. What a ludicrous suggestion in the first place. Its successful, well run and a total success for the sport. British speedway’s failings have nothing to do with it.
  14. Wolves fans didn’t turn out in vast numbers to Birmingham neither which is much closer although it’s understandable because there teams were pants. I understand perfectly why there won’t be one big league it’s simple really. There isn’t enough suitable standard riders to fill all team spaces unless you reduce team strengths to 5 or 6.
  15. But the sport needs the big names to survive with any modicum of respectability. Without them it will be left to the hardcore supporters to keep the sport afloat and as we know it’s an ever increasing older generation that will continue to diminish. The sport needs a big company and TV promotion to keep its awareness alive. They won’t be interested if the big names aren’t involved. The sport has been on life support more like. All leagues are diminishing and more lower level tracks closed before the likes of Wolves/Peterborough/Birmingham closed. its a worrying trend that’s for sure.
