  1. Gdansk is pretty good too, with easy access from the airport to the city and the city to the stadium. The track's pretty good and there are lots of sightseeing options within easy reach - Malbork Castle, Sopot (for a day on the beach!), and even a boat trip to Hel! Then there's all the Solidarity stuff at the shipyards and some great bars and restaurants. Highly recommended, but then so is Krakow, Torun, Poznan....etc, etc!
  2. Judging by Saturday's 'rain-off', it will be in doubt if there's dew on the grass tomorrow morning....!
  3. I've just realised that in '87 it was still the European Junior Championship! But I still need scorers, if a QR took place in Nyiregyhaza!
  4. Does anyone know if a World U21 QR was staged at Hungarian track Nyiregyhaza in 1987? If so, can anyone let me have a list of the scorers.....??? Thanks
  5. I love watching the Hornets, and for a long time last year, they were more entertaining than the Wasps. Sadly though, Newport sports fans will traditionally support only winning teams, and that goes for the Wasps, as well. I didn't think it was a particularly sound decision to run the Hornets, in 2009, so soon in the Malletts' promoting regime, and given that the current recession was just starting to bite, big-time. I'll be there for as long as they continue, but most won't, or can't afford that luxury, especially if the team is un-competitive.
  6. Dexter and June01, thanks for your interest. After using Google Translate, it looks like the meeting I'm interested in is a Qualification Competition for the National Junior Team, NOT the Individual Junior Championship. It's a 20 heat, 16 rider, individual meeting, though. Sorry for the confusion....!
  7. Hi Dexter, the link you've sent me is to the Fours result. I was looking for the result from the Individual Junior Championship round, on 15 August.
  8. Once again, I'm looking for the results from some meetings from a while back, this time from Poland. The meetings are: Rzeszow : Polish Junior Championship QR 15.08.1994 Ostrow : National Junior Team Qualifier 19.10.1996 Ostrow : Individual 31.07.1997 Can anyone help? (Apologies if this post is more appropriate to 'Years Gone By')
  9. Many thanks to you too, Bavarian!
  10. Thanks very much, Puma23! I really appreciate this!
  11. Not sure if this should have gone in the International Section, but once again, I'm looking for the scorers from some relatively obscure European meetings from a while back. So, if anyone with an interest in such matters AND a pretty long memory/access to the data, can help with the following, I'd be very grateful.... Amsterdam (Sloterdijk): Dutch Championship, Round Four 10.09.1994 Ludwigslust: WCQR 23.04.1995 Zarnovica: Slovak Golden Helmet 29.08.1993 (I know Joszef Petrikovics won it, but that's all I know!) Zarnovica: World U21 QR 14.05.1995 I'm not holding my breath, but I've been happily surprised in the past by the knowledge some of you have out there!
  12. Irrespective of how much rain we've had (and I live here too, so I too have my own view), ALL of the people involved in the management and administration of this sport (and that includes Main Man and the Malletts) have to question why we struggle to fit in important fixtures like this, before the last weekend of the season. Until and unless you can get that right, we will NEVER raise the profile of the sport. When it's good, it is the best sport in the world, but it's all too often spoilt by chaotic and shambolic management and administration. That's why we will never be taken seriously by other sports and by the media.
  13. ......and they wonder why we can't get people through the turnstiles....????!!!!
  14. This is a disgrace. Hornets fans (not too mention the riders), will feel short-changed by this turn of events. Once again, I'm going to have to defend Speedway's bizarre politics to my work colleagues (who all knew I was looking forward to watching the Final of a National competition), while they safrican american behind their hands at our sport's inadequacies! Another total farce!
  15. You don't seriously call either of those drinks beer, do you? But seriously, yes, you're right, Mateusz has always provided us with a knowledgable and in-depth assessment of Polish Speedway and his comments have always proved invaluable to those of us who get over there from time to time, or simply just take an interest! Keep it coming, Mateusz, we rely on you!
  16. Disgraceful track, and both teams deserve medals for trying to make a go of it. How someone didn't get badly hurt I don't know. May well affect the attendance on Sunday; Newport have blown yet another golden opportunity to promote the sport to a wider public.
  17. Cricket??!! Why would anyone want to endure THAT when the table-topping Newport Hornets are racing, just 12 miles up the road?
  18. I doubt it. The economic downturn is really starting to bite and everyone knows that the 'racing' at Cardiff will be nothing like as good as any of the others.
  19. Nice bloke running it, too, and knowledgeable about Speedway. We popped in and had quite a chat with him before Newport's match a few weeks ago. He's just trying to make a living like everyone else.
  20. I remember Johnnie, But who's God?
  21. [quote name='DK Rides Again' date='Dec 8 2009, 11:23 PM' post='1653932' Anyway, all this talk of pubs, surely a pie and a cup o' char, on what's left of the terraces, would be more appropriate I rarely drink at Speedway, because I'm usually driving....but after Speedway, real ale is one of my passions, so forgive me for leading the thread astray a touch! And you're right....I too would baulk at £3.50 a pint, especially for something like Stella.....
  22. All very valid points, Parsloes, Ron and Ian. The smoking ban has had a huge impact, but so too has the availability of loss-leader fizz piled high in the big 4 supermarkets, very often at prices cheaper than soft drinks. And does anyone else feel ever so slightly intimidated by the crowds of smoking drinkers now spilled out onto the pavements outside pubs? Anyway, hope you find a decent boozer for your New Cross reunion. The place closed a year or so before I even knew Speedway existed!
  23. Join CAMRA. The organisation is committed to preserving REAL beer and REAL pubs. We are in danger of being left only with Gastro-pubs, chrome and glass wine bars and disco bars serving insipid fizz!
  24. Try the Wales Tourist Board. There are dozens of guest houses and B&Bs on the Newport Road side of the city. Or, alternatively, stay in Newport and get the train in, like we do!
  25. Does anyone know if this season's successful one-off individual meeting might mean a return to league racing for Krakow? Pila and Lublin both came back in 2009, and the crowd for the Nowa Huta anniversary meeting looked pretty good. Krakow is one of my favourite Polish cities and a weekend there with a Sunday afternoon league match would be just perfect!
