  1. No, cos Brum didn't open til 2007. Unless you mean 1986
  2. That's a relief. The story on the Greyhound page was yesterday's date, they're a touch slow on the uptake then I guess.
  3. This looks a bit worrying. I always thought there was a covenant on the stadium stating it had to be used for sporting purposes. https://greyhoundstar.co.uk/perry-barr-pre-planning-application/
  4. 20 quid will have the "£10 Sport" crowd up in arms.
  5. True, but Villa sell out every game and have 20k waiting for a season ticket. The ground is about to be expanded to 52k+. Blues crowds are because their ground is a tip at the moment and Albion seem to get the same gates whether their successful or not. People still go. As far as Premiership rugby is concerned, it's at a crossroads really. 2 clubs gone, rumours that 2 or 3 could be in trouble too. Most clubs seem to have a rich benefactor keeping them afloat, bit like speedway really. Plus crowds are, in general, dwindling. Many rugby union fans are only interested in internationals and I know from experience many can't name which clubs most of the England team play for!
  6. Not enough people are interested in speedway and in any case, why would they be? What aspect of the sport would attract people who know nothing about it and have probably never even heard of it? The sport was lost to the city for 21 years, that's a lot of existing and potential fans lost to something else. The first few seasons back were fairly successful, crowd and team wise, then it kind of came of the rails and has struggled to repeat the "glory days" since. Football is the king really, Villa, Blues, Albion and Walsall all within easy reach. That's where the sporting interest largely is. Edgbaston come the 20/20 stuff too, packed out.
  7. He's says "coming on strong" so often, he could commentate on one of Mr Shovlar's, erm, documentaries.
  8. That Dan Bewley chap has some bottle! Well done, young un (again).
  9. I love watching the British Talent Cup (formerly Motostar) races in BSB, to see who the next big thing could be. There are some cracking kids coming through at the moment. Great to watch.
  10. Birmingham has a UFC world champion now, Leon Edwards. That's something else to celebrate.
  11. I think by the time he'd bumbled through the heat line up, the race would be over!
  12. Having the BBC on your side helps, if we were talking women's or transgender speedway, they'd be on it like a shot!
  13. Probably something to do with Wikipedia TBH.
  14. Aston Villa Ladies are playing at the Alexander Stadium this season, so there's a few bob more for the BCC kitty.
  15. If the council tax payers of Birmingham had voted on whether to hold the games or not, I'd wager the result would have been a big fat no. No other city wanted them, Brum stepped in.
  16. I think they've made sure that the route the coaches will be taking looks a bit tidier than it did. Hence the new station I suppose, though TBF it needed replacing years ago. I think the "Athletes Village" is earmarked for residential homes. Hopefully that's what it will be, but once the subletting starts, well...........
  17. The athletes aren't based in Perry Barr, they're being bussed in from Birmingham and Warwick unis and a hotel at the NEC. This is due to the fact the Athlete's village wouldn't be finished in time.
  18. Oops I always get those two teams mixed up!
  19. Think that was another one. We were up against it from day one that year, then the injury to Big Al made things a whole lot worse. We were allocated Jiri Stancl but he refused to join us and went to Cov instead. At least we didn't finish bottom of the league though, somehow we finished above Swindon.
