Greg At 45. How Does He Do It?

Posa is the absolute classic example of someone who defied age to stay at the top of his very demanding sport into his 60s.Keeping in control of a bike at speed on rutted ice is hard enough at a young age,let alone knocking on retirement age https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per-Olof_Serenius -
Now Len Silver Resigns As Co Promoter Rye House
iris123 replied to Dave Stummings's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
In his own words....... "After National Service with the RAF from 1950-52 I started writing letters to the 'Speedway News", then tried a few small articles for the 'Speedway Gazette' then edited by Bruce Valdar. When I started getting postal orders in return, my target was to be a speedway journalist. Over the years I have written on a freelance basis for most speedway publications - 'Speedway Gazette,' 'Speedway Reporter,' 'Speedway News,' 'Speedway World' and many more. In 1954, when the Southern Area League started I offered to write about the competition for the 'Speedway Star' and they agreed - with the proviso I also organised track sales at the then SAL tracks at California-in-England, Eastbourne, Rye House, Brafield and Aldershot. It was the start of a link that led to me being offered a full-time post at 'Speedway Star' in 1955 when then editor Eric Linden took on the post of features editor at 'TV Times.'" -

Daily Mirror International Tournament 1973

I was at the NZ v Australia meeting.A few years later and you could have had a decent Denmark team and also the USA.Nowadays it is hard to get any decent teams apart from Denmark and Poland. You could possibly get a great Russian team, but half wouldn't turn up........... -

Interesting because when I first went to football in 1973(Tottenham) it cost me 25p for league matches!!!!!
-
If that is double the normal attendance then it might make a difference of say 100 on each meeting over a season which could well help a team break even or make money. But then the way to go is to do an Ice Hockey style play-off and have 4 or 5 meetings to really get the crowds in???? Probably not

He mentioned Brisbane in his last post.I just guessed(maybe wrong)that was the place where he was living

In their defence,i must say that,at least in the modern stadia such as Parken and even the Veltins arena(I was lucky to go to the first one )it is a great atmosphere and a very slick run show. Not quite the same in Vojens........

The Olympique always seemed to have one or two riders that didn't ride in the UK who caused a bit of excitement.Think Wölbert would have been 1 in this line-up.That seemed to be missing this year from what I saw.Peter Karger is hardly a decent up and coming youngster, which tells a tale in itself
-
Like I mentioned on another thread, there doesn't seem to be much promotion of the GPs etc to the general public. It is more a "you scratch my back and i'll scratch yours" approach by putting ads in the speedway mag(s) preaching to the converted and the speedway journos don't write negative things about the guys at BSI/IMG.As I said this is probably their approach with the Rallycross world championship that they run as I have seen no publicity at all( a slight lie,as I did see a poster a couple of years back at a petrol station),so I assume they have just put out a few posters and an ad or two in the motorcar race mags

Olympic Stadium London

That is what I thought "New Science" was trying to say.It wasn't like a temp track that was built from scratch over some other surface. The base of the track and presumably the drainage was still there -

Doesn't always help.....as it happens the Stock car Challenge was yet again held in the Veltins Arena yesterday.Pity speedway couldn't do what Stock Cars has managed for a decade.Just look at the entertainment and the crowd!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5GhKm3FdSI Wasn't the basis of the track there and just needed the corners done and the obvious track work of course? -
Hmmm, the only place I could say had plenty of ads was Prague.Copenhagen I didn't see anything and in Vojens I saw a couple of posters in the town itself, but nothing outside on the roads or towns approaching and Gelsenkirchen/Dortmund was also free of any ads. Guess it might be left to the local promoter as it doesn't seem to be a BSI/IMG forte.IMG have taken over the running of the Rallycross World Championships. One of the main tracks is just outside Hamburg(Buxtehude) and do you know what,i never knew that the IMG run and Monster Energy sponsored meetings had taken place.Saw nothing advertising the weekend, even though I might well have gone if I had seen anything, and saw bo results either.Nothing on the streets, nothing in the papers and nothing on tv.But strangely we do get regular updates about Buxtehude womens handball team.............

Play Offs Should They Be Scrapped.?
iris123 replied to stratton's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Yes as you say it all depends on a large amount of luck.Ice Hockey and speedway are living in different worlds and I am a fan of both. But Ice Hockey thrives(if you can say that,as it seems even in the Uk some teams are struggling)in modern indoor stadia where everything is very comfortable with good seating and viewing, decent restaurants and food/drink outlets and importantly decent toilet facilities and usually a good sound system.Speedway isn't like that.Plus Ice Hockey generally has a season long of league games(now they have started a Champions League, but the UK teams play little part in that) with little else interspersed.Speedway isn't like that. 10 years ago in Germany we used to get an U21 meeting in the morning and a Bundesliga meeting in the afternoon. That ended and a couple of years ago I said how much I enjoyed those days.A rider said the track for the second meeting was very bad.Now while I think it might be possible to run two meetings in one day(not so sure about 4 meetings in one weekend)I doubt the riders would be willing to do it.Junior riders are much more willing. They often have two 80cc meetings in one day in Denmark and I think even maybe 4 or so over a weekend. But try getting senior riders to do it is another matter. There was the case of the junior riders doing their races last season at teterow, but the senior riders refused to go out on the track.......
