  1. The guest system was out of control when I used to go to speedway but I have to confess I'm not familiar with today's rules on guests. Once upon a time it was used for missing heat leaders but then it became common practice to replace missing reserves with a guest! I recall Oxford once using John Davis as a guest for...John Davis! The example you give does seem totally bizarre I have to say!
  2. Remember Mike Caruso riding for Hull and Poole but who sadly took his own life some years ago.
  3. I recall Ivan Mauger turning down a guest booking (Belle Vue?) as it may well have affected the chances of his team, Exeter, from winning the league.
  4. I believe that competitors are kept away from the public and on two day events they are kept in isolation overnight.
  5. I was just up the road from Fleetwood the other day when I visited Morecambe Bay!
  6. Oxford stalwart who actually rode with his dad, Reg, at New Cross before making a name for himself at Cowley. I believe he married the sister of actress Vicki Michelle ('Allo 'Allo) and opened a boutique in London. Later moved to Hackney before returning to Cowley but with little success (1973) and moved on to King's Lynn. I'm sure he also rode in the States for a while before finishing his career at Boston...again not too successfully. Names like Eddie Reeves and Roy Trigg evoke memories as a child as I remember my older brother talking about them before I used to go to speedway...as did John Bishop.
  7. Steen was featured recently in the magazine 'Backtrack.'
  8. Again remember them both well. Rolf developed into a fine rider but was tragically injured during, I think, a grass track meeting? I believe he married Martin Roger's (Leicester Promoter) sister. Steen Mastrup never quite made it and eventually moved onto Leicester but two riders I enjoyed watching during many happy evenings at Blunsden.
  9. There was another Pole (I think he took out Swedish nationality) and rode in the same Swedish team as Jan Andersson? Can't remember his name! Saw Veijo on his debut for Eastbourne. Looked useful for a while but as you say seemed to lose his way.
  10. One for Sidney? Remember Sumner (together with Rick Woods - Newport and Scott Autrey - Exeter) turning out in 1973 and riding for 'The Budgies' for a short while (recommended by Briggo) If I recall his family was connected to the Greyhound Bus Corporation back in the States? He looked the part but lacked pace and quickly disappeared from the English scene. I remember seeing his rear wheel which didn't have traditional spokes (days before spoilers) and was quite innovative at the time.
  11. Because I'm a keen photographer and when I'm on a day off work I'm busy downloading and scanning thousands of my photos, re-adjusting and re-cataloging etc etc...which means that I am working on my computer. Answer your query? However you appeared to be somewhat pro-active either side of work and a visit to the Post Office? If people continue to quote me on this thread and it comes up as a highlight whilst I'm working on my photography of course I'm going to comment if I feel justified. Perhaps some posters should be concentrating on returning to the title of the thread.
  12. A thread that is headed "Should Tai Woffinden Ride For Team GB" which has turned into a thread about "Robert 72" of which, yes, I have no interest in so guilty on both counts.
  13. Yes guilty as found. Think I'll move to the memory thread and general comments in future!
  14. Yes as I've stated I've said enough...don't agree with what you say but time to move on!
  15. We agree re:Gresham and you admit that you enjoyed reading some of his posts but he put you on ignore because you do tend to antagonise people rather than engaging in a harmonious manner. You had stated that you checked 134 pages of this thread to see if I had passed comment? Stalking? I check thru' many threads and don't comment on most only on those that I find interesting or amusing but it doesn't stop me from registering a 'like' if I feel justified. And why do you think that people are having a pop at you? You need to lighten up. I obviously have posted 'likes' because the post (s) in question often highlights that you imply that you are always right. Other posters pick this up and I support their comment with a 'like'. As I've said elsewhere by posting a 'like' doesn't require a comment to support it. There are other contributors I also add a 'like' against a comment or comments made by someone I disagree with. Some contributors continually post 'likes' against comments criticising some of my posts but I don't read anything into it and it doesn't bother me. As you say each to their own. I've said enough on this subject and need to move on.
  16. As I said get your facts right before quoting misinformation. I developed a rapport with Gresham as he instigated threads on cycle speedway, model riders etc etc which were well within my personal remit and brought in other contributions from other posters. Regards placing people on ignore doesn't that tell you something about yourself and how tiresome you sometimes become with your constant scrutinising? If other people are happy to banter with you...fine. That's their prerogative. ...and before you find me guilty of stalking did you honestly check thru' 134 pages on this thread to see if I had posted anything? You need to check out your own motives before condemning others! As you say, however, continue the thread for those that are interested.
  17. What tommy rot! I haven't passed comment on Robert72 because frankly the thread doesn't particularly interest me. As usual, however, threads do tend to wander from the main theme. Gresham made comments about race jackets (amongst many other things) which I recall but don't remember actually commenting one way or another personally. I developed a good rapport with Gresham over many articles as did many others on this forum. Posting a 'like' doesn't automatically require substantiating with a post. As regards stalking? Give me some credit...as you may or may not recall I actually placed you on my ignore list some time ago because of your attitude to some contributors but foolishly allowed you back in. As regards posting nonsense? That's your view and not necessarily the view of others. Keep to the facts which you always highlight when posting on this particular forum. I am not the only one on this forum who find some of your posts antagonistic and designed to create animosity. You need to lighten up and go with the flow sometimes.
  18. ...as is my prerogative whatever you mean by your patronising remark... and, no, I'm not interested in you scrutinising, analysing, deconstructing and reconstructing yet another post which you appear to take great delight in doing and so creating yet another long winded thread that just goes on and on and on.
  19. Yes he was a bit of a head case on track. Remember the occasion when he flew out of the pits at Smallmead and hit the white line and flew up into the air...bike and all!
  20. Interesting having just read a back edition of 'Backtrack' I came across an interview with one-time Ipswich and Reading rider Tim Hunt. 'Although regarded as a handful on track, Tim Hunt has always avoided bad language and commented on John Berry's outburst when he left Ipswich. Memorably in a televised Poole v Reading match at Wimborne Road Tim was excluded by the referee...' To quote Tim "They broadcast all of my discussion with the referee and I didn't swear once - I see no need for it. The rudest I got was to politely tell him that he needed new glasses - or a new pair!"
  21. Strewth! Surely this 'debate' has exhausted itself?
