  1. Some not half bad "former British Champion" types there, eh Subedei?
  2. If that isn't the biggest understatement I've ever heard I don't know what is.
  3. Sheffield unknown 87-2 is Derrol Keats Ian Stead is the other unknown.
  4. So don't. Some might have been; some (myself included and I saw Carter many times) weren't
  5. Not true Garforth Duke. Carter was a top rider with an unswerving desire to reach the pinnacle of his sport. He never did. To say " everyone knew...he was actually the best" is ridiculous.
  6. You gotta be kidding - Steve Sant was not particularly tall at all! My guess he was no more than 5' 10 "
  7. The point I was highlighting in my comment was that you state that the events bring a measure of disrepute and shame upon all those who love speedway. I love speedway and doubtless like everyone else was horrified by what happened. But do I as a speedway lover feel shame? I was horrified by what happened but neither shame nor disrepute rests with speedway fans who had nothing to do with events.
  8. Quite how you come to the view that the events under discussion bring 'a measure of disrepute and shame' to those who love speedway is beyond me.
  9. Newport-1 looks like Reidar Eide to me. Wolves-1 Sigalos/Ermolenko/Pfetzing
  10. .....and wasn't Mike Ferreira also Rhodesian ?
  11. After he left Sheffield he went to Coventry under the old rider control system. If memory serves me correctly he broke both his ankles in a hang-gliding accident during the close season and then moved on to Birmingham where he was never the same rider. I think he finished his career at Cradley.
  12. Yes, but given that the initial relevance of the thread has now gone (i.e. Backtrack complete with DJ feature now published) surely you can forgive us Sheffield fans a little self-indulgence?
  13. Now there's 4 decent riders to have in your top 5.....
  14. I do, and here's a couple of examples............ No. 3 http://www.sheffield-tigers.co.uk/exeter19061975.html No. 5 http://www.sheffield-tigers.co.uk/whitecitybl05051976.html
  15. .......remembering of course that Doug's Sheffield career pre-dates 1977 by quite a few years...............
  16. Doug rode at no. 3 for a long time at Sheffield which meant, under the traditional 13 heat formula (as in 'happiness is 40-38'), facing the away team's no. 1 twice, in heats 11 & 13. I think he also rode at no. 5 during his Sheffield career.
  17. Y u mellowing with age, Subedei..........??
  18. I didn't know the man, nor his wife. I did however, as a fan of the era, see him ride many times. A very balanced reply to my point for which I commend you. There are some (understandably) very strong views on this subject and I think it's important that differing viewpoints can be expressed whilst not shared. As a matter of fact yes I do. I live in Perth and have done for quite some years now.
  19. And, by the way, me thinks isn't grammatically correct.
  20. ??? Please do share your knowledge with us and tell us exactly how you know he felt regret, as opposed to say not wanting to face up to any consequences that may have arisen from events.
  21. Have a fond memory on me frigbo.............said duo in full flight can be seen here
