Norman Strachan

Recommended Posts

Just read that Norman Strachan has passed away. That only leaves Rick Timmo from the 1972 starting Oxford line up...my first year following the sport.

"Nobby" Strachan was a character and one of shortest riders.

RIP

My first meeting was also in 1972.

1973 was my first full season though and Norman was a Pirate again by then, so I remember him well.

From the Poole squad that season, we've also lost Christer Lofqvist, Antoni Woryna and Odd Fossengen but most who wore the skull & crossbones that season are still with us thankfully.

RIP Norman, a real team man.

When I first started going to the Abbey Stadium back in 1971 the stadium announcer (the late Graham Guthrie) always pronounced Norman’s surname as Strawn. It wasn’t until a certain Gordon signed for Man Utd that I realised I had the wrong pronunciation all those years.

Rest easy Norman.

As far as I remember the Cradley announcer always pronounced him as Strawn as well, so that's what he's always been in my head.

Norman rode for Newport in the very first meeting I saw back in 1968, but my main memory of him was getting his autograph a couple of years later when he was a Cheetah (I think). Beautifully written, taking his time, with the full name, making a stark contrast to most riders autographs that I managed to acquire.

RIP
