If we still ran junior teams the old rule of promote a junior if both sides were using R\R could be utilised.

Also the issue isn’t so much about the amount of guests but the cause of why there is riders missing.

I don't think there was ever a rule about promoting junior riders - it was more a case of if teams had two similar riders missing there could be a "gentleman's agreement" between the promoters to use juniors.  Certainly if, for example, one team had a heat leader missing, but the other had a second string missing, it was highly unlikely that juniors would be used.

I can remember Juniors being promoted. However in practice how would it work today. Let's say Belle Vue and Sheffield are against each other, and Kurtz Doyle J Holder and Pickering are out.

You put out teams as follows 

1 Cook

2 Cairns 

3 Blodorn

4 Ziscke

5 Kildemand

6 Junior 

7 Junior.

1 C Holder 

2 Killeen

3 Flint 

4 Etheridge

5 Rowe

6 Junior 

7 Junior.

Would it be fair to charge Premiership prices, for e championship standard match.

Would more be attracted to the match, than if you had replacements such as Fricke Douglas Lawson, Musielak?

The agreement to be fair was more aimed at the National League.

Back in the day if a team ran R/R they nearly always had a  junior rider named at No8, but then again what rider these days is gonna travel for a meeting on the off chance he gets a ride, and like been said in those days the majority of the teams had a junior team who rode in a fixture after the main match had finished, so the riders were already trackside.

chances are there will be a junior knocking around the pits anyway. maybe this is a good reason to have second halfs again, at least that way there is a reason for them to be there.

I personally used to enjoy the junior league racing, we had Howe, Tacey, Clouting and Lawrence Hare at Ipswich, and remember Spicer and Fairweather being up at Lynn.

If you go back years ago, British League Teams would always have an up and coming National League rider as a number 8 who would drop in when British League riders were missing. Robert Hollingworth was No 8 for Lynn for quite a while, I seem to remember Chris Turner for Belle Vue, Might of been Nigel Flatman at Ipswich. In my opinion this worked well but it was reliant on the senior club having a good working relationship with the junior club who essentially were feeder clubs, and of course no doubling up (other than as a number 8 ) and very limited guests.

Christ I can remember Flatman that was around the Jem Doncaster , Kai Niemi days from memory

Nigel Flatman emigrated to Oz and was still having the odd spin on the shale over there up to a few years back.

Ben Howe, Shaun Tacey, Sav Clouting and Lawrence Hare was probably the best junior team any club has ever had, they were untouchable.

Arena Essex had riders like Robert Ledwith, Tommy Palmer, Nick Floyd, Shaun Nicholls (related) Chris Young and Russell Etherington.

And when I was a postman in Chelmsford I briefly was delivering to a junior rider from Peterborough who always looked like a fish out of water around the tight confines of Arena Essex, his name was Darren Tupper.

A group of us used to sponsor Ben Howe when he first started riding at Ipswich, i actually bumped on Shaun Tacey a few wks back at a Mildenhall meeting and he still does grass track now and then.

He was brilliant bellowing out the stars war chant every week yet again goes to show another die hard who rarely goes anymore I can think of so many a lot of them are now just to old late 70's early 80's to probably even get there these days.

I often wonder what happened to Nutter and his posse who used to rule the second bend bar back in the mid 80's early 90's complete bunch of loons but were again all die hards all be it they spent most of the time downing pints and hardly ever watched the racing which in those days was generally class most weeks post 87 onwards when we stopped being the whipping boys.

Remember back then we were all younger,no care in the world then.Many of us went on and had families and possibly found other things to do family wise.Some of us still chose to keep coming to speedway and bring the young ones with us in hope one day when they are older they will keep coming.Luckily my daughter still loves speedway as much as me and she is now 27.
