Wimbledon Cl Teams

Recommended Posts

Yes, it was Ron Jones and there are a few others missing from the '03 listing.

Following the 'model' of '02 (and including all those who made even what was sort of a 'guest' appearance borrowed from an away track..) you need to add not just Jones and the other one I mentioned, Barry Burchatt but also:

John Branney

David Haigh (actually used twice..)

Martin McDermott

I'm wondering if mimmo is just using CL records rather than CT too, because also omitted are the two riders used only in Trophy matches. Shrammy (who I mentioned before) and most signiicantly, Joel Parsons who made six appearances. for the Dons in that competition..

Parsloes old chap,

I was just getting ready to go to speedway at King's Lynn when i saw Speedguy's request, so I knocked something up as quickly as I could from memory, so yes there were names that I missed.

Here is the 2003 list.

I thought it was only Justin Elkins people at Wimbledon wanted to forget

Obviously my list the other day wasn't all from memory, but a lot were, it was just that I didn't have time to dig out a comprehensive list.

Another (very) popular rider at Plough Lane was Gavin Hedge, yet another second generation Don!

Gavin unluckily broke both wrists in a nasty fall against Wolverhampton (in 2003 or 2004?) and never came back. He was a real trier who could beat the best (and lose to the worst!) in traditional Wimbledon style.

Controversially, I'd have him in my team every time ahead of Dan Giffard. Whilst Giffard's average was much higher, I don't recall him ever getting the better of a rider who he wasn't expected to beat. (Hope that last bit makes sense!).

What about Marc Norris?? Someone with talent but dare I say it not having all the spanners in the toolbox...

The great enigma Justin Elkins could merit an entire discussion topic of his own. I recall an imperious 18 point maximum in 2002 against Newport followed by "nil point" the following week! When Weymouth made their first visit to SW17 in 2004 for the splendidly titled "Trevor Hedge Cup sponsored by Trevor Hedge Racing" Justin was the Wildcats No1 rider. Sadly he never made it past the first bend in at least 3 rides.

Finally, the guys in the original Consortium were a tremendous bunch of people. On the day of the Sky televised U21 Test Match v Sweden in 2003 a couple of us decked out the Centre Green in Union Flags and Swedish flags. It really looked the part. The esteemed programme editor even mamanged to get the Speedway Star Sweden correspondent to write an welcome article in Swedish in the programme.

As Derek says, happy days and many happy memories. :)

Hmm, here goes..

I, Parsloes (sic) being of sound mind (well that's wrong for starters!! ) do hereby concede that in the Peak District hides away an area known to postcard manufacurers as the 'Derbyshire Dales'. Most softie southerners like me have only heard of three types of Dales before: the more famous Yorkshire variety; Mrs Dale of Diary fame; and Jim, star of Carry On Up The Khyber..

Many thanks are due to ageing geography teacher M. Moseley esq. for imparting this life-changing new piece of information. The number of puns relating to Dales which will as a result be appearing in NL progs from now 'til eternity can, of course, be blamed on said Mr. Mimmo!!!

Thanx Bazza!!! :approve: Any time for that beer!!!

I wouldn't take too much notice of Rob, though - he slagged off the track EVERY WHERE that Oxford lost.. I remember well him constantly harping on about the "bumpy track" at that place in Kent where uniquely his lot were the ONLY Conference side never to record a win...

What I miss most about Plough Lane '02 - '05 were all the good friends we had there, the friendly banter among the large crowd and the general sense of good feeling around the place. These are clearly things Rob wouldn't be missing from his also sadly sadly defunct track!!

Parsloes, calm down and read my post again.

All the best

Rob

Sadly that wasn't really down to us. We would have loved to have used the fabulous original track (used from 1968-1991) but that was tarmaced over and we had little option but to utilise the centre green. We couldn't go in any further either due to the siting of the drainage system.

I agree that the bends were too narrow for the straights but we did see some terrific racing, especially from Buzz & James Wright (my favourite visitor to Plough Lane).

Oxford were always good value on their visits, I recall the Dons sneaking a victory thanks to a last bend engine failure for either Chris Mills or Craig Branney in 2004. Happy days.

Prodons - you're a year out, the Dons won 46-44 in 2003 after Millsy fell on the last lap, then Oxford won 48-47 in 2004 after a comeback in the second half of the meeting. Both great meetings, despite the limitations of the track.

Yes, I realise the track wasn't really down to Wimbledon Speedway - you just had to fit in a track the best you could given the restricted area available. It was a crying shame, though - with a decent track to go with the stadium, Wimbledon would have been an ideal venue for meetings such as the ELRC, and maybe even a GP round.

All the best

Rob

Apology accepted Parsloes, what a noble gesture on your part, with so little prompting

There is another Dale that you've conveniently forgotten, and that is that of the National League's No 1 team-manager (ut oh, way from a stream of abuse from Ponytail  ) Mister Dale Allitt.......COME ON, BRING IT ON!!

Don't know why they've slipped out of line.

That really is an impressive list. I'l crosscheck the names against the original batch sent for this season. Thanks again.

Jim, star of Carry On Up The Khyber..

Parsloes, and now you're going to issue another apology, because I don't think Jim Dale was in Carry On Up the Khyber.:lol:

All the best

Rob

There are times you have turn a blind eye to what he says and just humour him Rob, as he gets precious little right since he's developed all these split loyalties

You and I along with the universe know that Jim Dale wasn't in Carry On Up The Khyber!! Anyway, must go, as I'm going to the cinema tonight to see Sharon Stone and Beyonce in the Railway Children.

Alright, alright...: I meant, "Carry On, Follow That Camel"..!! I'm not as old as you two old geezers!!!

And Mike, it'll do your blood pressure no good to be thinking of Beyonce removing her red knickers to flag down that runaway train. Sharon of course doesn't wear any!!!!

The one thing that you guys have in common with the team I viewed at Wimbledon between 1974 to 1988 is that you were clearly having fun. I have learnt a lot about the end of the Dons on here and what an amazing list of riders appearing. Did you know it was coming to an end?

Oh Sharon Stone and Beyonce are not in the Railway Children so some of your Stats are wrong I bought the DVD for nothing guys come on! ;)
