    I have found and posted video from several tracks in Japan here on the Flattrack Forum. Some of the races are pretty good, stadiums just begging for dirt and a GP of Japan.

    Laydown Weslake

The engine was one used by Martin Hagon when sponsored by Antig Weslake. One of the factory bikes is in the hagon Shocks showroom and the other was bought from Antig by Lee Cross who crashed and wrecked it. I bought the motor.     SHIRLEY, Stuart (Ellesmere Port & England).............................December 3, 1977.............Ellesmere Port Wow brings back a sad memory. I used to pit with Stuart and was there on that day at the Ellesmere Port Training School. Stuart was a very good rider. Terrible day.

    I think I remember Phil Collins saying he was sponsored by Wal Phillips, I know he had used the injector, as had Peter and Les who showed me the one he still has in October of this year. Neat carb.

  11. I still think that smaller tracks especially for CL teams should be considered. I read in SS that Weymouth maybe out of a stadium. For some areas it maybe asking too much to find a space for a 1/4 mile track. It is always going to be hard living with greyhound, football and rugby landlords so why not be flexible. Here is a picture of me at Costa Mesa. Note the large heap of dirt, this was a xtreme mx jump night. Silly stuff but the crowd loves it. Anyway look at the track and crowd.     Belle Vue's Gary Hicks

    You simply can't beat the sound of an open piped speedway bike. Reminds me of the sound coming out of the pits at Belle Vue's Hyde Road in the '70's. Just wonderful. Gary Hicks gated fast and rode a smooth race to victory at Ventura last night, Eddie Castro came second with a late charge and Chad Newlee of CNC Photography finished third. Gary Hicks video Ventura, California June 25th, 2005. Gary Hicks and Putty Mills got to meet for the first time. Gary is Cordy Milnes' grandson and Putty saw him ride in Santa Barbara in 1933, later on in the '40s Putty rode in the same meeting as Cordy Milne at Lincoln Park in Los Angeles. Gary Hicks is still a Belle Vue Speedway owned rider so it seemed fitting for him to wear a Belle Vue body colour. I got this off Peter Collins in I think around '74.

    Weslake's

    The first Weslake was raced not in speedway but on Oct 20th, 1974 at Lydden, a grass/chalk surfaced track by Don Godden. The Hagon Shocks showroom has one the last complete factory bike Tig perry was involved in, a SOHC laydown grasser as raced by Martin Hagon. Two bikes were built, Lee Cross had #2 and crashed it. I have the engine from #2 here in California after being re-built at Antig. Antig still have spares for the Weslake, and when I was there new engines too.     I've had confirmation that Larsen was clocked at around 61-62 mph. The guy with the radar gun is known now and hopefully will concur. The speed was also annouced to the crowd. copy from email Josh rode about a bike length off the pole in that race and on the dirt line so his orbit around the track was a little longer, thus generating a little more speed. This info was from former racer and CM race reporter Ryan Evans.

    Ha Ha, I had a Garelli Rekord, ugly bike but would blow off FS1Es and SS50s. I getting confirmation of the speed just incase I made it up. Getting old memory fading. Yep, that is a problem when riders ride for more than one team in different leagues.

    This 898 powered ft bike http://missoula.bigsky.net/newton/a10a.jpg runs on both fuels depending on what a promoter will allow, just carb re-jetting needed to swop between petrol and methanol. The engine would be easily converted to PL spec. Weslake once offered a petrol conversion for their engine. I think they said it would take an hour to do and in tests the petrol bike was actually faster off the line. Have you seen Ascot? At Costa Mesa Josh Larsen was clocked across the start/finish line at 62mph. Speeds look very different on video with the camera following the action.

    There could be simple reversible changes to save money for CL. I.e. An NGK spark plug for your petrol motorcycle is around 3 quid, an NGK for a speedway bike is 40 to 50 quid depending on who sells it. You can use stock Jawa ignition or spend 400-500 quid on a magic box. Oil for a speedway bike costs a fortune, fancy clutch plates, using an edge on a tyre, turning it around using the new edge and then tossing it costs money. Lower the compression, run them on petrol and regular motor oil (potential new sponsors there), no fancy mechanical extras. If a rider has money them let them spend it on making the bike look good and promotion for themselves. Buy a decent van so they can get to the track. You know Britain is not a big place and so small tracks if they fit an area in a low impact fashion should be considered. As for the States other factors prevent lots of tracks being built, another discussion if anyone cares. The riders from the tracks that are there Penhall, Hamill, Hancock, Morans, Miller, Janniro etc are more than enough proof for the worth of small tracks. You should try and get ahold of some Ascot videos. Phil Collins, Mike Faria, Billy Hamill 3 wide in the turns lap after lap swopping positions, awesome stuff. A nice wide small track with a little banking.

    Santa Barbara 1969

    Here is some footage and backgound on the cameraman from 1969 Putty gave me permission to put his home movie footage on the web so here we go. Putty first witnessed speedway in Santa Barbara, the year was 1936 and he and friends climbed the fence of a local baseball park after hearing some noise to see Sprouts Elder's promotion putting on a show. He started riding in 1940 on a Crocker and 65 years later rode my laydown yesterday!! He also did a lap riding backwards. You'll have to wait too see pictures of that. Years later in 1969 he took this footage of a race on the school running track of San Marcos High situated between Santa Barbara and Goleta. The first corner shows a blue and white leathered Eddie Mulder take the lead in flattrack style overtaken by #19 Sonny Nutter with a more conventional pose. At the end of clip one and in clip two # 11 Ivan Mauger shows how to do it properly. Other riders are DeWayne Keeter, Steve Bast, Jim Airey and others. Which rider is # 42?     No points limit Tacticle rider changes allowed within team as in soccer. In other words new rider can be brought in, but rider already named and riding that night cannot ride in someone elses spot. No guest riders

    I've just watched Briggo's Golden Greats from 1989 in Landshut, Germany. Penhall, Collins, Betts, Fundin, Knutsson, Wassermann, etc etc. 10,000 fans 2 Valve Jawas and a well pepared track with dirt. This was obviously just for fun, however still great speedway. In my Grand Plan thread I suggest lower hp for engines and smaller tracks for the lower leagues. Jawa make a 2 Valve still and it can be bought in an upright configuration. Jawa 2 valve formula ford type racing for the CL with smaller tracks allowed giving a greater chance to build one. Small is beautiful Would Carmarthen Dragons still be going if they went for a smaller track? I wonder. I would like to see good modern riders on 2 Valves, http://www.ollenygren.com/ has some. Good old fashioned challenge match. Can't be that hard to organize, maybe the upper echelon wouldn't compete, I bet you could get Screen, Stoney, Wilson etc to have a go. Proper meeting, good prize money and upright 2 valves on a track with DIRT!!
