  1. Entitled to your opinion, but you seem to be basing it on 'he has flitted in and out for 10 years' as if it was his choice?! Its only the change of averages/team building limits and the occasional intervention of his Polish teams that have stopped him competing over here every year.

As I said previously, I don't agree with the current testimonial rules either, but thats what they currently are and I hope any/every rider who is granted one gets decent support on the day.

  2. I'd imagine that Poland may be the biggest national market in terms of actual speedway viewers, but the popularity of speedway there is over-estimated and from a sponsorship point of view it's also about latent/potential support.

From a commercial perspective, the UK has a larger population and much larger economy than Poland, thus more potential to sell cans of Monster or whatever.

If I were Monster, I'd certainly not be amused at a UK blackout.

Hardly a black-out if Eurosport have it!?

  3. I suspect a lot of sponsors in major sports do it for the corporate kudos rather than the direct returns from spectators/viewers. They use the corporate entertainment opportunities to impress clients and to do business.

The problem with speedway that no serious business in their right mind would want to entertain clients at a speedway stadium, probably not even somewhere like Cardiff.

Speedway also has this uncanny knack of shooting itself in the foot. The last serious sponsor of British speedway was Coal Products, but they came along at a time when use of coal for domestic heating was in steep decline because everyone had installed gas or oil central heating, not to mention that councils were introducing smokeless zones.

Monster is probably the first sponsor in years that the average person might actually have heard of, and indeed actually go out and buy the product (even though it's ghastly stuff). We don't actually know what they're paying, if indeed anything, but yet within a few months of getting them on board, the SGP manages to lose television coverage in it's biggest market...

Not disputing your overall point, but where do you believe the biggest market for SGP television coverage is?! If you believe its the UK, then I think you are mistaken!!

  4. UFC is Ultimate Fighting Championship, MMA is unfortunately also known as Cage Fighting. It is the fastest growing sport alongside Cycling in the World as I have already mentioned. More MMA gyms are springing up / expanding in the UK more than anything else barring kebab shops, corner shops, and charity shops of course.

Interestingly enough, at the end of 2012 the UFC was the only sport in the US which saw an increase in spectatorship... this is against the mainstream sports such as Ice Hockey, American Football, Baseball and Basketball.... all the mainstream sports saw a decrease in support. My company own a 50% stake in a UKMMA promotion which is only at its early stages but over the next 3-5 years its going to boom.

Aah, I see!!!!!! Were you interested in it before you became part of it (sponsored it)?

  5. and that Ray - and apologies for not saying your name earlier and just calling you another post - thats rude.

I dont watch speedway on sky regularly but havent noticed any specific speedway related advertisers

Sky Sports have incidently just dropped show UCMMA which is arguably one of the top 3 British mixed martial arts promotions and MMA/Cycling are the two fastest growing sports in the World - why? well Sky Sports are bidding for the rights to purchase the International rights to the UFC in the states which is ending its deal with ESPN.... in this country UFC is better known as its the biggest in the world.... what does this mean.... more pay per view nights

    Whats UFC?

  6. This is becoming a bit of a 'MONSTER' debate!!!

Sponsorship of anything should not be considered on its own. As has been rightly pointed out, sponsorship should only be part of 'The Marketing Mix' which includes advertising, promotions, PR etc etc.

I'm not sure what Meridian Lifts hoped to get out of their many sponsorships over the years, but imo they are not an obvious 'fit' with the sport?!

Many years ago I was involved in some media (local newspaper) sponsorship of an Elite team, which at the time was selected to increase the brand awarenessand readership of the paper in that particular area - hopefully leading to increased sales. However apart from the direct cost of the sponsorship, there were also freebies, giveaways, stickers, Free team poster with every copy etc etc. (I think the Argus do similar stuff with Eastbourne, even though they are not the main sponsor).

However, a possible drawback of having a media sponsor (Sky Sports??!), apart from the increase in coverage within that media, is that it can risk isolating the product from all other media!??

We all bemoan the lack of media coverage/interest for speedway - and usually blame the product or lack of marketing of it!! But it could just as likely be a reaction to 'Sky Sports Speedway' that reduces interest elsewhere?!

I think the sport should be looking at companies with a good fit, where their product or service is used within or can be linked to the sport! How about for example, Mercedes Vans, Oil or Pressure Washers or............??

    Value? Worth? God knows.

  7. Yes,it's a good job you want to protect the riders as i am sure they are all clueless and will sign up to anything.....And of course if it does fail before it has got off the ground just what is it to you or any fan?You haven't as of yet set off for one of the meetings i hope or bought a UK speedway series jacket and beanie.....Why not just wait and see how this pans out?Hope they manage to sign up a bunch of decent riders and hope this provides the basis for a better future:if it fails it fails. But at this stage to start worrying about possible negatives seems a bit strange

Message received and understood!! I'll keep any further thoughts and opinions on this topic to myself and hope that if the series does come to a track near me on a Tuesday I hope it doesn't clash with an Islanders' fixture!!

  8. Just a thought. Wasn't something like this attempted a few years ago and riders were threatened to have their licences revoked if they took part in a non sanctioned speedway meeting????

    Precisely Screamer!!

If the organisers have gone through all the right channels - and they may well have done for all I know - you would think that the main Speedway bodies would be publicised as being in support of it, with the necessary logos on the website etc.

I'm sure it won't make a bit of difference to the average punter, but its the riders I would want to ensure are fully protected, in terms of any league contracts/ACU paperwork etc they may have signed?! I wouldn't want to see something fail before its even off the ground, if the correct permissions have not been obtained.

  9. how much do you think to sponsor elite league and premier over 3 years?? how much is it really worth??

To whom? The BSPA and the clubs, or to the potential sponsor?

I would suggest the figures could be very far apart! It would also depend on how much media coverage could be guaranteed from 2014 onwards, unless the sponsoring company had very close links to the sport already and would get 'a return on its investment' in increased product sales, for example.?!

ps. To be thinking about this and posting it at 0455 hours? I think you need some more quality sleeping time!!

  10. Hans - 'Batch should be allowed to follow me to Blunsdon'

    http://www.swindonad...lunsdon___Hans/

Well he would (be advised to) say that wouldn't he?!

Interesting paragraph in that statement -

“A parent club should never stop a rider from going somewhere if they don’t intend to use him or offer him a team place. It is another thing if they offer him a team place and he turns it down, then maybe other clubs would have to buy,” he said.

Isn't that exactly what happened with him and his parent club? But he 'didn't think they were serious'!!

With BSPA insisting Batch is to be purchased, I'd be interested to know the price being quoted?!

  11. There have been a number of press reports both in the UK and Poland that Lewis Bridger has signed a contract to ride for ROW Rybnik in Polish League Divison II this season. For the avoidance of any doubt, this is not correct and no contract has been signed.

48 hours is a long time in Speedway!!!! :D

  12. I believe there has been an 'understanding' between promotions that any rider not signed up by March 1st (March 1st being the start date for all/most rider contracts for the ensuing season) then those riders become available for 'loan'.

However in the case of Batchelor, I understand that the BSPA MC have overruled that - as they are entitled to do -and are insisting Batch be purchased, as indeed Peterboro had to purchase him previously.

Maybe the BSPA MC have taken into account the illegal initial approach to Batch by Swindon in their decision??!!

  13. Potentially it certainly is but I'm not convinced by him. If this signing had been made a year ago I'd certainly have agreed with you but his form last year has given me doubts.

2 big injuries - wrist and groin - coming back too quickly and quite a bit of 'offtrack' shenanigans certainly didn't help Sam's confidence. If he gets a good solid start and remains injury-free, he will fly for Wolves!!

  14. this is great news for speedway riders. If you look at the format it looks like it is a GP format which in one’s eyes is great. The reason i think this is great because if you are a young rider and you are not at GP level this can help get use to the GP format if at a late stage you get into GP. The only down side at the moment i would say is they have not put which tracks they are using just the next 2 meetings. I know we are in Jan nearly Feb but it would be good to know what tracks. I think this would get more people interested.

Presumably they are looking at tracks that are non-speedway owned, are already used for other motorsports and do not have greyhounds!!

  15. Of course there is, with no independant governance its dog eat dog. But Matty boy is the one who goes squealing to the media just before the AGM with all his big ideas.

At least he has some big ideas, unlike some of his small-minded colleagues, who continue to push the top level of the sport down to its lowest common denominator!!

Maybe - just maybe - his squad proposal might have kept Sky a bit more interested?!!

(Apologies for this on the KL thread!)
