As to the question of if we can all survive this... I am always very positive about the future and what lays ahead but it will take an effort from everyone involved in speedway from our fans to our governing bodies to ensure that we succeed. Promoters and riders cannot do it alone... never could, but even more so after this.

Keep safe, check in with your elderly relatives and if you need a chat reach out to me anytime. No need to be lonely.

Step forward Barry Bishop - kneel and Arise Sir Barry. And onwards to the deserved speedway sainthood status. Please foward some DNA and I will attempt to clone 50 Promoters, who can work together to ensure the speedway racing does survive.

My claim to fame was leading PC for the first half a lap in a grass track. He flew past me on the back straight so fast he would have been in the pits relaxing as I started the last lap. He was class.

To Peter Collins - remember just how you were adored by so many and are still olved by them, for what you did and how you did it. Pure class for sure, a true speedway racer.

But that was a time of genuine crisis when potential deaths in the millions, not thousands were anticipated and people faced it without behaving like idiots. Times change.

Times do indeed change. No-one now has any savings to fall back on for a rainy day. I don't think we can blame austerity for that.

1976, pleased to say “I was there”. The atmosphere was amazing, it was an open air stadium but the atmosphere matched Wembley.  PC was brilliant. I heard he played it crafty and fluffed his practice laps to make the others think he was off form.

Another YouTube not to miss. Search for “Peter Collins v Egon Miller Long Track”. Think it was 1982 world long track final, track was wet and dirty. Amazing race.

Did you go with Chequers Travel in 1976? I remember it so vividily, the whole trip and having to buy zlotys before you entered the country. The only thing I found worth buying in the shops was quite good quality monochrome photograph paper. Stupendous Peter Collins effort! The whole trip by coach was £41.

the one that stands out most in my memory is Ove Fundin's win in 1967.

And mine too. Especially memorable as we crowded round his car when he arrived and he got out on my side and stood on my foor in the crush. True story and it was his left foot too! I have washed it since, but not for quite a while afterwards.  I was 18 and at the peek of my speedway madness. I got a lift over from Norwich ( where I then lived ) to join the King's Lynn coach ( and sing The Hairs on a..... ) Those were the days! I remember  coming to blows with fans from the distant North who supported Eric Boocock. As a child at Norwich , taken by my speedway crazy parents - on the back of their bicycles, I never really took much notice until Ove arrived there and became my first speedway hero.

  6. I would like to mourn the passing of Stars superfan and season ticket holder - David Mckuen, who passed away last week after a short illness. David was devoted to the Stars and attended every year since they opened ( and also the Linnets football team ). He was a kind and generous man who went out of his way to give me a lift to Stars matches. If you knew him on the first bend terraces, join me in a There You Go friend salute. R.I.P. David. God Bless.

Yes, Sid, Gordon was superlative around Wood Lane. Marek Cieslak handled the flat track as good as anyone (ncluding Gordon) during 1977 (went off the boil somewhat in 1978) and his outsdie sweeps were a joy to behold. Great memories trips "to the smoke" on Wednesdays and occasional Tuesdays. Wouldn't have missed those days for the world...at least I have some memories of attending and following speedway during it's last "Golden Era".

Me too, I was a regular and rode down from Northampton, where I then lived on my R75/5 Great Days and Great speedway racing.

Influenza has no cure. Otherwise it wouldn't kill between 250,000 and 600,000 every year.

    I'm not belittling Covid-19.

I'm simply pointing out, if the media hyped up the amount that die from different strains of influenza, we'd be locked down every flu season.

I believe that you are quite right about this and I too am shocked that no real comparison is being drawn. Supposedly killed 8,000 here last winter but no lockdown of society and no headlines. The problem seems to be the speed at which Covid 19 spreads ( wether checked by any means or not checked ).  If 260,000 would die here from Covid 19 if not stopped, that would be a national disaster and vastly worse than any normal flu season.

World Champion before he is 30! brave words, hope you are right, as I am English through and through, but after Robert's impeccable 2018 he some what lost his way before his accidents etc.

I too have watched speedway for many years ( 1949 ) but I don't remember much of that until Ove Fundin came to Norwich . I watched Robert from his earliest National League laps at Saddlebow Road and I genuinely believe he has what it takes to move up the last cpuple of steps from  2018. Dan Bewley looked almsot as good as Lambo until his horrific accident.  He looks as if he will come back well too. Lambo will be World Champion ( if he gets the one or two lucky breaks, that anyone needs to get there - to the very top ). Good luck to Drew Kemp too.

Personally if it's over in a month or so we may be ok. Up to 6 months or a year of disruption I think speedway like many other businesses will go to the wall. The government cant just print an endless pot of money otherwise hyper inflation will kick and it'll probably cost you about 50 quid or more to get into a meeting. The cost alone of a basic bailout will have severe consequences in years to come. We could be looking at 25 percent income tax and vat.

Everyone comments on the Government propping up this and supporting that. Yes, of course it's not an endless pot of money - our money - the G. has none of it's own ( other than the around £500 billion they are borrowing on our behalf , for us to pay back ). I agree that the next ten years will be spent ( as the last 10 or so were ) in rebuilding the economy and Yes, income tax and VAT will have to rise. How else do you pay off the biggest ever debt?

And Boris's bold statement of " We will send it packing in 12 weeks" will be yet another foolish utterance and words he will later choke on. The way he has led the handling of the Covid19 crisis, marks the end of his Premiership.

  11. Doing too much riding in 2019 ( even for a young gun who lives, eats and breathes speedway ) and having at least two injuries to carry, defintely took the edge off Robert's riding last season. There is no doubt in my mind that he will return to the glorious form of 2018 before long. He is destined for the very top and will be World Champion before he is 30 ( so plenty of time! )

    Sadly, they wouldn't.

Belle Vue sees racing like this (and much better than this), every week on the best track in the UK but the crowds are not returning to the terraces in any significant numbers.

There you have it. If this is correct then over the next five years UK speedway will not survive. No sizeable public interest or support equals no UK speedway ( as we know it ).

    totally isolating pastime!

Anything goes - sp long as it is - totally isolating. The only thing that can slow down or halt the spread is "social distancing" . That is at least four feet plus away from anyone ( meaning everyone other than those in your house already with you ). That and washing your hands after touching door handles etc that A.N.Other has touched - genuinely is the key.

Just seen that Daniel Bewley thinks corona virus is a joke and that its not a major threat, he's winging that he's out of work, well millions of others are in the same boat.

Just hope non of his relatives catch the virus he then might change his tune selfish little sod.

It's almost certainly not a threat to Dan Bewley as he is young and fit, but yes stand well back. his older relatives and family friends.

Anyone who cannot see that it is a major threat to the over 60s and those with major medical complication and conditions is short sighted, unthinking and .......

  15. Yes, that is they whole point of speedwat RACING, all four riders were genuinely interested in scoring points and were fully prepared to give it a go! IF 50% of speedway races were like this ( rather than 10 -15 % ) the crowds would be there on the terraces. includng clubs being able to attract new fans!
