Thanks for that, really useful, isn't Coventry Monday 28th though?

  2. Although a 'punk' in my early years, I have to agree Andy M that the music has not dated well, and was in many cases no more than 'Pub' rock. It certainly was more about expression and quickly became a cultural movement.

However it did rid us of ELP, Yes and the likes, but more importantly showed the youth of the time that being in a band was not elitist, but something anyone could do if they chose.

Of course many of the more noted bands of the movement, The Jam and The Clash for example, were never really 'punk' bands in the true sense and their music is imo a testament to the fact that there was some great music coming out of that era.

  3. Now that would be something - all I can say is he'd be better at presenting than I was a riding a speedway bike!! :D

Thinking of filming this meeting for a DVD - what's the general feeling on that??

Good idea, but any chance you can film from the straights rather than the first/second bend. Meetings filmed from the bends never seem as good to watch, just my opinion Mike

And why is that then - Trees and Shooting Star seemed to enjoy it? B)

Personally, having already forked out more than the usual weekly speedway budget at West Row this week we decided to give this one a miss simply because we'd rather watch a team match. It was certainly nothing to do with the GB line-up as you insinuate, and we'd have made the same decision if it had been full of U-21 Danes/ Czechs or whoever.

Anyway, Lynn after all do at least have some up and coming GB riders as club assets - which is more than some teams not a million miles away

Meowww, look forward to seeing you use them someday :lol:

  5. Did they grade the track between every race again ? I thought the meeting would take too long and so unfortunately decided not to go as I had to be up and able to work this morning. Dont mind too much if its a weekend but not when I have to work the next day.

Sounded a great meeting though, shame Danny King couldnt quite make it in the final race !

Yes they did SimonB, and the meeting did drag on a bit, although there were some excellent races, with both Danny and Jason doing themselves credit. Overall a good night, although James Brundle will be a little dissapointed with his score.

Danny was very lucky though to get a second chance in the final, clearing clipping Boxall at the first bend after missing the gate. But you need a little luck in these events and Kingy certainly got it :D

Ben Wilson was certainly a deseving winner imo and Bridger great entertainment missing the gate most races the executing some well timed passes, he does look the business. Some of the CL riders aquited themselves well Dennis, Auty ....

Crowd wasn't great, but then a BRITISH U21 Final would hardly be much interest to Kings Whinge supporters would it

Good to see young Ben Hopwood get a ride, if he hadn't fell in his race he'd have beaten Kennett , full credit to him though for jumping up and getting on with the race

Have to agree with all thats been said about Kennett, a move away to a bigger track seems to be a must if he's to progress much further, didn't seem to want to leave the white line much again.

Hey Bryn it would have been more than feet hurting if 'Madam' had caught up with you :D

  6. Like the majority on here I really enjoy the magazine and EX-Retro for that matter (how good was sunday!).

However I would like to see you keep away from to many excerts from recently published books.

  7. didnt ryr do a similar scoreline too? saw the eagles beat Berwick 61-16 in the cup final and was at the belle vue one meantioned earlier, the also beat Lynn 75-0 when they walked out as did p'bor v b'ham one year.

Saw Mildenhall beat Berwick 64 - 14 if memory serves. The only rider beaten was Rob Henry i think.

  8. I wonder how many times he has heard that!

I received my copy of the new Speedway History Magazine this morning and was impressed.

The paper, text and picture (colour and bw) quality are a vast improvement on The Speedway Years,

    Totally agree Moxey63

which I presume, will be revamped now a different printer has come on board.

The Speedway History Magazine also has some fine contributions from the likes of Dick Barrie (remember him?), Cyril Hart and Glynn Shailes included.

My honest opinion is that it is one of Speed-away Promotions finest offerings - and I practically have them all - and is a necessity for those, like me, who will always dig a little deeper in the pocket for a slice of nostalgia.

    FenTiger76, I would re-subscribe if I were you.

Won't be subscribing though, 20 pages with plenty of little note (Speedway programme covers as stamps!! & usual load of adverts) for £3.50 is a little steep imo. It seems too many items of little information. For example the collectors corner is an excellent idea but skirts over the subject rather than concentrate on one area per issue, this is a shame as ever since the excellent Speedway Collectors Club Magazine stopped the sport has been in need of a magazine covering the area of collecting.

Still feel his only really quality product was the History of Speedway Programmes book, which although £25.00 was a fine book. Sadly the updates only lasted one year, before they were dropped

  9. If I am correct the company that used to film meetings at Mildenhall were KM videos. I believe they started in 1982/83 season.

Does anyone know what happened to them and if possible and email or contact address please.

  10. I'm sure this will be a magazine from the stable of Howard Jones.

Mr Jones had produced some good magazines in the past especially on defunct tracks.

Unfortunately, the most recent publications have been of poor technical quality ie:

non glossy paper which means poor resolution of printed photographs.

I wish Mr Jones well, but I rather think he will now find it difficut to compete with glossy, high quality mags like Backtrack.

Fully agree, the Defunct Speedway Magazine is a good idea, as was the Speedway Programme Guide which sadly stopped being updated very quickly.

The technical quality does not match Backtrack or VSM as you say, but I can put up with that, its the regular changing of direction and delays in getting the magazines out which give me the problem. I am sure his Speedway History magazine is one I subscribed to over two years ago, but had to ask for my money back as nothing ever materilaised.

I wish him well too as there is not enough speedway literature about for the Speedway fan imo, and I admire his endeavours, but won't hold my breath on this one.

If he had a website set up it might help!

  11. Arne Pander - Oxford's first 'Great Dane'.

His first meeting as an unknown -v- Coventry, 27th March 1959, 12 paid 14 points from five rides. Was the Danish Champion at a time when many people didn't know speedway even existed in Denmark.

13 points the next night, paid 14, at Poole, and 13 at Oxford -v- Poole the following week.

After a couple of weeks in Denmark for a family bereavement he returned with 12 points against Belle Vue.

    And so on!

    Where is he now?

    Regards

Sounds too much like ALan Pardew for you to consider interviewing him, hey Tony :P

  12. If anybody wants a 2005 GP spreadsheet, to fill in while watching Sky or just for messing about on  ;) , send me an e-mail and I'll forward it, no probs.

It's not so easy this year, what with a wildcard AND track reserves, but it seems to work okay.

Please note:- A reasonable amount of brain cells are required to fill it out successfully, so I won't hold my breath for an e-mail from a Wolves fan.

    :D

    Received last night, excellent.

    Many thanks Steve
