3rd Time Lucky Canterbury Crusaders!

Recommended Posts

I drove past Kingsmead this afternoon and noticed that construction work has begun on the site. Not sure what's being built to be honest, but I guess it's the first stage of work on a casino/hotel which I saw mentioned recently in a local paper.

Shazzy, it seems not even a lottery win will see the old dream come true now mate. As you well know, there's thousands of happy memories being bulldozed into history and you just can't help getting a lump in your throat and a little tear forming. Somehow, all the time the site was there it seemed there was always some hope, maybe a real long-shot, but a chance.

The words of that song keep running through my head, "If I could turn back time".

Talking of songs, Kingsmead in the early 70's had a very limited choice of records that they played between races, Knock Three times - Dawn, Without You - Nilsson and one by Roberta Flack, if I remember rightly that was it! Brings it all flooding back everytime I hear one of them

But Kev - up until three and a half years ago you had never met & got to know any of us

Understand you are sad about the place & the history - but perhaps the people you've met since then make up for your loss

Had a surprise 60h Birthday party for my Mum last night, she thought she was going to a win and wisdom with her m8, unfortunatly the lights were dimmd she was pushed into the hall, the disco lights started and Congratulations blarred out!!!

For those that remember him Paddy Patterson was there with his family inc. his daughter Tracy who I grew up with from a tot at Canterbury she hasn't changed one bit and we enjoyed chatting about our youth at Kingsmead, she hasn't been to speedway for years but............. Shazzybird is going to drag (not that she needs to be) her along to a few meetings this coming season, a friendship that came to a halt in 1987 after 19 years when Kingsmead closed has now been re-kindled some 18 years on, I can't wait for the season to start again even more so now :approve:

Honey ......... Uncle Paddy sends his regards to you and Dad.

Dick Searle .......... Happy Birthday :lol:

Lets have some more memories of the best team of our era to keep the mighty Crusaders name alive.

I have sent some Crusaders photos from my Speedway photo collection to www.canterburycrusaders.co.uk hopefully they will be posted soon. Some great pics of Barney Kennett plus some action photos (including a crash sequence) of riders who I can't identify (I think one is Les Rumsey). The webmaster will probably recognise them!

Sorry about lack of updates etc. I really dont have any spare time now days! Women, bikes (real ones, with 3 wheels!) and work etc take up all of my spare hours. If anybody is interested in taking over the site (FOC!) please let me know, I'll pass on everything I have inc a copy of dreamweaver and the rights to the site name. I would like to see it kept up to date, but I cant find the time to do it. Any offers??

I can be contacted via the web site e-mail address.

I managed to programe a wee bit of spare time at work today, I took my laptop in with me (on the off chance) and have put the new piccys on the web site at last. My manager thought I was very busy and kept out of my way all day  .

New pics have a couple of unknown riders, any answers to their identity appreciated. Crusaders Web Site

I will try my best to keep the site updated as much as poss. Any offers of help etc would be much appreciated.

I know someone who really will love his new name :wink:HERE

Pic. 4 Brendan Shilletto

Pic. 5 I would say possibly Uncle Ted or Kelvin Mullarkey as the Leathers are Alvima "Infradex"

sparked a real conversation here now as to who the mystery rider is

Ted said something about his teeth being in the tool box, he said he had fallen while riding and lost some teeth as a result, I am sure he mentioned Toney Davey of Ipswich.

Dad standing right behind me read this and said "nope not Tony Davey, that was Phil Crump at Crewe"

I remember Uncle Ted taking his teeth out and putting them in the tool box in a little tub (the same little tub that is still in his tool box today!)
