BOBBATH 467 Posted July 5, 2008 I am wondering who the oldest surviving World Finalist is-think its Cyril, but could be Louis Lawson I guess-anyone top Cyril in age-he's gotta be well into his eighties.(Also possibly Mr.Watson (Colin/Cliff??) who was in the 1949 WF?? I think it was Cliff Watson as Colin had already retired by then. My first instinct is to nominate Split Waterman as the oldest as he was born in 1921and Cyril Rodger in 1922 as was Louis Lawson
BOBBATH 467 Posted July 6, 2008 Looks like its Split then-anyone top that??
norbold 7,168 Posted July 6, 2008 It was definitely Cliff Watson in the 1949 Final. Are you sure about Split Waterman's year of birth, Knowle? In my copy of Tom Morgan's "Who's Who in Speedway" published in 1949, someone has manually crossed out 1921 and written in 1924.
BOBBATH 467 Posted July 6, 2008 Anybody here know Reg Fearman or any ex riders on Costa del Sol-if they see Split they can ask him-1924 sounds better than 1921 but how could we find out. Also does anyone know if Cliff Watson is still alive?

In the details it mentions that he rode a motor cycle before the war so 1924 would be pushing it a bit.I had a quick look at my Stenners but could not find any further confirmation. On the subject of Cliff Watson I do not think he is still alive. That same publication gives his year of birth as 1916.

BOBBATH 467 Posted July 7, 2008 Hopefully someone will find out Split's true age-and at the same time remind him that many people remember him with affection even after all this time.
