Polish League Could Shutdown In 2010

Recommended Posts

In view of the world wide credit crunch and growing demands for higher wages that are coming from our speedway riders, there is a real risk of financial instability in Polish speedway. It is quite possible that, if nothing is going to be done, then the 2010 season might have to be suspended.

Having this in mind, we, the shareholders and chairmen of speedway clubs that make up the Polish Speedway ExtraLeague, have decided to take up rigorous steps to overcome the growing problem of financial crisis. The blue print of new regulations is being prepared to create a work market in 2010, adequate to the financial situation and financial capabilities of Polish ExtraLeague clubs. As a result there won't be enough openings for the average level riders. This in turn should lower the ever growing financial demands when it comes to contracting riders.

We want to retain the high standard of our ExtraLeague , the standard our supporters over the recent years, have become accustomed to. Therefore we are determined to carry out our plan as we see no other alternative.

If this happens the GP riders will be running back here in a hurry.

I'm impressed that the Polish promoters are, at the end of the 2008 season, already drawing up plans for 2010.

The Poles do have a fair degree of latitude, since they survived for a few years with just one foreign rider per team and therefore have the domestic riders available. They could just go back to that scenario. In 2009 teams will have to field at least three Poles.

Just out of curiosity, we ought to do a bit of a what if analysis. Supposing one league went belly up - be it Poland or UK - what would the impact be on the other leagues, riders, fans, the GP circus, TV etc?

Then, what would happen if two leagues shut down - Poland and EL.

Finally, what about Poland, UK AND Sweden?! :o

It's a bit ridiculus really. All they have to do is cut the wages. There is no other league the superstars can go to from Poland, so they have to accept.

Thank you for that reminder, Dekker. My sincere apologies to any promoter reading this thread.
