The Laurels

Recommended Posts

Research in regard to The Laurels, a classic at Wimbledon in its National League and British League era - probably equal to the London Riders Championship, is taking place on:

Any help in regard to winners and years would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have just checked on the Speedway Researcher site. In 1946 the event was a best pairs meeting - all others were individual championships.

So that's why there were two winners in 1946.

Do you require the Spring Classic and Internationale winners as well?

LONDON SPEEDWAYS is interested in all major championships staged at all the London tracks from 1928 - that's those with a reasonable lifespan. Many thanks for the offer.

the 1968 laurels won by barry briggs was the first meeting i ever went to. i remember the stadium was still wet from the floods caused by the river wandle bursting it's banks earlier in the month. i lived near to the track and had to be rescued by rowing boat from my upstairs bedroom window!!!.

I remember that.My family had been to the south coast for the day and my dad came back via the old Connolly leather factory and the car got stuck in the flood water. We had to get out the car window and walk home

The Speedway Control Board Tribunal considered Olsen's appeal on May 26 and upheld his protest ordering that the original heat 12 result should stand. Pretty sure the flood was September 68. There used to be markers on the wall showing the water depth - wonder if they are still there . . .

Re the trophy meetings - cant remember if it was the Internationale or the Laurels - but there was a very nice large shield presented to the winner - but it was usually kept at the stadium in a cabinet afterwards. I wonder what happened to that . . .

The large trophy was the Laurels, it would be intresting to find out what happened to that, and other trophies that were at Plough Lane.
