King's Lynn Young Stars V The Saints

Recommended Posts

From www.scunthorpespeedway.com

The Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints crushed the King’s Lynn Young Stars 58-34 at the Norfolk Arena last night to pull four points clear at the top of the National League table. Five riders (Ashley Birks, Gary Irving, Richie Worrall, Steve Worrall and guest rider Barrie Evans) scored double-figures as they wracked up twelve heat wins and six 5-1 maximum heat advantages in the match.

The Saints could have also recorded a maximum in heat 1 as Stefan Nielsen passed both Oliver Rayson and King’s Lynn’s new number one Kyle Hughes before a burnt out clutch saw him relegated to last just before the finishing line. Another drawn heat in the reserves race was followed by a pair of 5-1s to the Scorpions and by heat 6 the home side were using Kyle Hughes on a tactical ride. Steve Worrall limited Hughes to second place but after a 5-1 from Richie Worrall and Ashley Birks in the next race the Young Stars managed two 4-2 heat advantages on the back of two heat victories for Jake Knight. It left the score at 32-24 to the Saints but Team Manager Stuart Parnaby gave a rider replacement ride to Ashley Birks in heat 11 and he joined up with Barrie Evans for a 5-1 over James Cockle and Tom Stokes.

It proved to be the first of three 5-1s in four races which ensured the Saints not only won the meeting but took home a bonus point for winning by seven points or more. After the meeting Team Manager Stuart Parnaby reflected on the side’s first win on the road since he took control at the start of 2010. “We are a development side so it’s taken us over a season to reach this level. It hasn’t come overnight but we are reaping the rewards from blooding the youngsters. We were so close to winning at Wolverhampton (against Dudley) and now we’ve managed it. Hopefully it is the sign of things to come and we can win a few more before the season ends”.

“The lads gave me the bumps tonight because it was my first away win but they should all be very proud of what they have achieved tonight. Apart from Barrie Evans, who did a great job as guest cover for Paul Cooper; the oldest rider in our side is Gary Irving. He was only 22 in March and is still developing at a fair old rate of knots. We are just lucky to have a wealth of talented young riders at the moment and we could field a strong team tonight”.

The Saints are next in action at Newport on Sunday 3rd July but before then they are represented by Steve and Richie Worrall in the National League Pairs meeting at the same venue on Saturday (18th June, 7pm). Tomorrow, it is the turn of the Premier League Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions as they travel to Ipswich to take on the Witches in the first leg of their Knockout Cup first round replay. The second leg is at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday night (7.30pm).

Well done to Scunny, Still my tip to win the League at seasons end. The reason, when they track their full team, they will always have what i consider to be at least The strongest 1st/senior reserve in the league, and the strongest 2nd/Junior reserve, and in past seasons that has proved crucial, well done to Scunthorpe for cultivating a youth policy from which they should reap rich rewards this season.

Pretty dull fayre last night I thought with only two or three decent heats but thats taking nothing away from the Saints who were fantastic and deserve huge credit for the way they discover and develop their youngsters. They still would have won with Nielsen (why on earth did he not get 4 rides?) and Greenwood riding instead of a 27 year old guest and R/R and if it was the rules that prevented this happening they need sorting. Would love to see the Saints win the NL title as their side is what the league at this level should be about.

They wanted to put Stefan out in heat 15 but when declared the ref stopped him, hence Richie Worrall being late for the start, just in the 2 mins,

the home team also had No,8 there and didnt use him!!!

Strange to stop Stefan not ride in ht15 as in the NL it is A nominated rider & not top scorer or by CMA(rule book 2009!)

Our use of the no8 probably was because others were scoring points & theirs were not  but it is about practice & learning. If you don't ride you don't do either!

Was never going to be a close contest when Scunthorpe arrived with all four double uppers and Barrie Evans as a guest

Fair play though all four riders have come up through the ranks.

The rider who impressed me was Steffan Nielsen very unlucky to have what seemed like clutch problems after

passing Hughes and the Rayson in heat 1. Looks fast, aggressive and hungry to suceed. If Scunny are not going to give

him a regular place in their seven maybe he could be the answer to Mildenhalls no 6 position?

Next Wednesday is a great opportunity against Wolves. That will be a belter

As for last night, Scunny's team could probably do a job in the PL with a proper PL heatleader. Great to see these lads progressing but boy they are already too good for the NL.

Nice to meet Baggy & Mungo last night although Baggy didn't really say much as he had his head buried in his mobile doing / cocking up the updates :t:

:D good to meet you too screamer. Might even be tempted to come watch the EL side on the back straight one night to sample the atmosphere!

The back straight for me is the place to be. It can get quite loud down there and the atmosphere has, on occassions, been quite unbelievable.
