RYE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

Rockets Go Down Fighting

Somerset 52 Rye House 38

(League Cup; Friday, April 10th 2015)

The Restart Rockets may have left for home without any material rewards but they still took away more than a few positives from a battling 52-38 defeat at Somerset in the League Cup.

The Oak Tree Arena has been an absolute graveyard for the Rockets in recent times – their best result from three visits last season was a 62-28 hammering – but they were far more composed here, briefly taking the lead thanks to a 5-1 from guest Claus Vissing and Robin Aspegren in Heat 5 and holding the Rebels to a narrow 28-26 margin at Heat 9.

Ultimately, the Rockets were unable to match their hosts for sheer firepower, and a record of four race wins tells much of the story, but they still emerged with credit thanks to solid hauls Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen (whose first ever visit to the circuit netted 8+2), Aspegren (6+2) and Steve Boxall (also 6+2).

Rye House team manager John Sampford was proud of his side afterwards. “We held them tight for the first nine races and it was only in the second half that they pulled away. We certainly gave them plenty to think about, and we were disappointed not to get to 40. After three drubbings here last year, we showed that we can compete with them at this place.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more from the team. After Monday’s frustration against Peterborough, this has hopefully been a boost to our confidence, and we can take things up to another level against Plymouth tomorrow (Saturday at 7pm).”

Rye House scorers:

Claus Vissing (guest) 9, Nicolaj Busk Jakobsen 8+1, Robin Aspegren 6+2, Steve Boxall 6+1, Anders Mellgren 5+1, Alex Edberg (guest) 3, Dan Greenwood (guest) 1+1

Somerset scorers:

Brady Kurtz 13+1, Josh Grajczonek 11+1, Leigh Lanham 9+2, Richie Worrall 8, Paul Starke 6+1, Charles Wright 5+1, Benji Compton 0

Match Points: Somerset 3 Rye House 0

Last season the most frustrating thing was a guest was normally a NL rider when other teams choose real value as a guest, no doubt the reason was, it was the cheap option. This season seemed to be different with Covatti guesting but soon as we lose at home it back to the cheap policy (Greenwood D is not even the best Greenwood, who himself could be dropped any day) And what happens the reserves score a whopping 3 combined.

This is not a complaint of Greenwood and I thank him for his efforts but where was Sargeant, Ellis, Clegg, Covatti, or either Neilson to name some. I know we only won 4 heats but with Somersets three No 1s that is usually going to happen its the 3-3s that you need to nick a point.

We HAD a chance of wining this section

That's what I love about Sampford, a pure winner! "This has hopefully been a boost to our confidence". Erm you lost 52-38 John with four race winners.

No it didn't, the meeting preview was subsequently updated to cover fact there would be guest replacements for both Rye House reserves.

It was probably the driest, barest track I have seen in all my visits to OTA, which was not how to prepare a track with home advantage against any Rye House team which was evident with Rye leading after the first few heats. However it was a surprisingly decent meeting with plenty of effort from both teams. Brady has star quality and will be in demand by EL clubs next season. Also nice to see a quick well organised 2nd half that plenty of people stayed to watch.

Sargeant @ Coventry

Ellis @ Lakeside

Clegg @ Edinburgh

Stefan Nielsen @ Coventry

Covatti was possible but don't rate him much.

No change there Najjer,a few rolling starts as per normal from the home team and a throttle sticking open for the Waspels Richie Worral in heat 3 made all the difference....:P

Indeed, quite a few Wasps supporters there last night... :approve:

What you don't realise is that he was probably making reference to the fact that the Rockets were in with a shout for much of this meeting. The final score flattered the Rebels. Rye House made a real fist of it and mixed it with the Somerset riders as well as out gating them on a regular basis.

Jacobsen, Aspgren, Vissing and Boxall were all competitive pretty much throughout the meeting. There were numerous passes and tight finishes. The meeting was run smoothly by referee Robinson with no re-runs or tape infringements.

Although dusty later on in the meeting, the track was first class with two racing lines. Great entertainment.
