He's fantastic after meetings at Wolves too. Was just saying to somebody the other day how much more likeable and accessible speedway riders are to footballers for example, means that the younger fans can connect with them better.

 

I was waiting for a quick word with him once he'd finished with all the fans (about 10.50pm). It wasn't so much the considerable amount of time he spent with them -- as you note, we are rather spoiled in the sport in that regard -- but the level of involvement and the complete absence of any hint of impatience or of it being in any way a chore. A lot of youngsters will be waking up today looking at their signed programmes/caps/bodycolours and their photographs with the man and his trophy and thinking "I really enjoyed that."

LAKESIDE duo Edward Kennett and Kim Nilsson both performed strongly in Saturday’s Elite League Riders’ Championship – but finished frustratingly short of success.

Kennett experienced the ultimate agony of being the class of the field during the qualifying races at Coventry before missing out in the Final.
The Vortex Hammers star reeled off four wins out of five, including several of the quickest times of the night, dropping his only point in his fourth outing to Robert Lambert.
At that stage Kennett and Niels-Kristian Iversen were the meeting leaders, but when they met in Heat 19 Iversen finished last, which left Kennett two points clear of Fredrik Lindgren going into the Final.
There might have been two Hammers representatives in the decisive race, because Nilsson was also fast and consistent throughout the meeting with wins in his second and third rides helping him to finish on ten points.
But the Swede missed out to Iversen and Chris Harris in the semi-final, meaning he was classified fifth overall.
Kennett had first choice of starting position in the Final and selected gate two – but he made his worst start of the meeting at just the wrong time.
A fierce battle between the other three riders on the first lap resulted in Wolverhampton rider Lindgren taking the title, ahead of Iversen and Harris.

So after my moaning and whinging the lure of Saturday speedway got me along to Brandon in the end. Racing was poor, as has been well covered on here already, having said that, the sight of the quality riders Iversen, Lindgren and later on Harris going flat out around Brandon was a good spectacle. Best part for me was seeing the stadium packed once again, slightly surprising to me but amongst the doom and gloom made it a feel good meeting. Good to see fans from all over the league there too, credit to those who travelled.

1 last moan from me. And I mean no disrespect to conor dryer here but how can you take an ELRC serious when a NL reserve/MDL rider gets a ride in an ELRC. Surely reserves should at least be PL standard at the very least.

Agree Phil, but the simple problem you're dealing with here are the riders.

 

They won't do it.

 

You won't get two PL boys to sit there all night on the off chance of a ride as they're far too important.

I was at Hyde Road for all of Briggo's victories. They were proper League Riders Championships with fantastic line-ups.

Looking at last night's field it's depressing to see standards fall so low.

One positive from last night was Bomber Harris. He spent a long time signing autographs, having pictures with fans and handing goodie bags to young kids. It was a lovely thing to do for the kids and you could see how much fun they had. Not seen a rider do that before. Good work from the Bomber.

Indeed - I used to collect autographs when I was around 10 years old, never had a problem getting one from any riders !

To be fair, if they printed it at the beginning of the week they made some very accurate predictions on the EL play-off final scores. My lottery ticket awaits.
