There was no return match in the same year, but in 1936 the Paris-Buffalo team hosted a couple of London speedway teams in a series of challenge matches at the Stadé Vélodrome Buffalo, Montrouge, Paris.

 

The first London team to visit France in the 1936 season was West Ham. Their meeting took place in Paris on the Saturday Night of May 23, 1936. Two teams of six riders each met in a 9-heat match.

 

And these were the announced team line-ups:

 

PARIS-BUFFALO (in Marine and White colours): 1-Dick Wise (cpt.), 2-F.Meynier, 3-L.Boulard, 4-F.Hofecker, 5-E.Béranger, 6-A.Lemone

vs

WEST HAM (in Red and Blue colours): 1-Jack Bibby (cpt.), 2-A.Sadwy, 3-Les Gregory, 4-R.Lee, 5-F.Tuck, 6-Geo.Tidbury.

The other London team visting the French capital in 1936 was Hackney Wick. Their Meeting went ahead on Sunday Afternoon of May 31, 1036, again at the Stadé Vélodrome Buffalo, at Montrouge, and again with six-man teams over nine heats.

 

Paris Buffalo had beaten West Ham a fortnight ago, and did not make any changes to their team line-up for the Hackney match. However, the name of Pairs-Buffalo team captain was now given as Dick Case (not Dick Wise), and I am uncertain which one of them two actually rode in these meetings? One of the many unsolved mysterious regarding the pre-war speedway meetings in Paris.

In the West Ham v Paris-Buffalo - R Lee is that Danny Lee, while Geo Tidbury surely is Jack Tidbury? I also think the A Sadwy in the West Ham team MIGHT be Arthur Swebey?

Why is Fernand Manner named twice in the Paris team v Hackney Wick? Did he perhaps take extra rides as there were only five riders available for the Paris-Buffalo side? In the same match is S Hodgson in fact F Hodgson (Frank Hodgson)?

Absolutey right, iris123, that double naming of F.Meynier was just an error when I was typing in the names. It is of course Fernand Meynier only once (at Number 2), and then Leon Boulard (at Number 3).

 

The names of the foreign riders were often spelled wrong in the French programmes, and therefore gustix is most probably right about the identity of Danny Lee, Jack Tilbury and maybe Arthur Swebey.

 

Unintentional wrong spellings of names and/or wrong nationalities (Australian or English) happened quite often with the foreign riders at the Paris-Buffalo meetings. The press sometimes even got the names of the French riders wrong, for example here the name of the Paris-Buffalo team's number 6, listed as "A. Lemone", is in fact Raymond Lemone.

 

Weirdest false spelling of name and nationality, in fact of his complete identity, must be that of a rider appearing in a Paris-Buffalo speedway meeting as "Josef Skotnicky", who was refered to as either being a Czech Champion, or a Polish champion. He was in fact a British rider by the name of Scott Michie.
