cityrebel 2,960 Posted July 25, 2017 My first meeting at plough lane was in 1968.The crowds were probably more than the 5,000 mark when Ronnie Moore returned. Wembley were getting five figure crowds in 1970/71 & West ham's gates in 1971 were a mere 3,000, despite having a poor team.
Guest Posted July 27, 2017 (edited) NEW DATE FOR DONS THURSDAY 27 JULY 2017 Following the disappointment of Monday's(24/7) washed out fixture at Central Park Stadium, Kent Speedway club have moved quickly to set a new date for the John Cearns Cup match against the Wimbledon Dons. This annual fixture which acknowledges & celebrates the historical links between the Cearnsport-run track in Swale and the world-famous south-west London club who were based for decades at Wimbledon Stadium will now go ahead on Monday 21st. August - 6.30pm start time.Kent Speedway co-promoter Len Silver was happy to confirm that star attraction Steve Boxall is to skipper the Dons septet - the current holder of the prestigious Laurels title is available to ride as planned at number one for a strong 'select' (largely unchanged from the side that had been due to visit last Monday) representing the Londoners - with a great deal of interest being expressed among both sets of supporters for this much anticipated fixture. Guest Posted September 1, 2017 Apologies for this photo Link - it is late 1960s into early 1970s and shows photos taken by me in that period at Wimbledon Stadium. The majority were for use in the old 'South London Advertiser'. https://www.skidmarks1928.com/v/photos/john-somerville-collection/C204475040
Guest Posted September 3, 2017 I am certain there was a cycle speedway track in the Wimbledon Stadium car park in the early 1950s. Eventually the club moved to a new base in nearby Garrett Park. Or am I (as usual) completely confused on things?

Whatever.....but a preview of a meeting obviously doesn't belong in "Years gone by"!!! Neither does a match report from just a "day gone by"
