Dick Darstadly 0 Posted April 28, 2004 Sure I can do that. That is why I keep producing tribute web sites. For the reasons you outline. I want to preserve why speedway was so special for me and share it with anyone that is interested. For Free.
dantodan 314 Posted April 28, 2004 Hiya DickDastardley, Razzle snazzle grazzle No I ain't changing my name to Mutley! My email address is dantodan@btopenworld.com send me a mail and we will see what common ground we have. This is really a bit of archeaolgy isn't it. If someone doesn't preserve the past it will become a murky no go area.
norbold 7,162 Posted April 29, 2004 Speedway History is being lost or degraded everyday, also why let all this fall into the hands of the money makers who expect us to pay for retro mags and books Having now had five books on speedway published, I only wish this was true! I can assure you I don't do it for the money. There's not much of that to be made with speedway books. I do it because I like doing it and for the very reason you are suggesting setting up a website, i.e so that the information is not lost and is disseminated to as wide a public as possible. Dick Darstadly 0 Posted April 29, 2004 I do not think he was having a go at you Norman personally. You do a vey good job with your books and I am always buying them as they are inexpensive and of course you help me out with material for the web sites anyway. bucket 0 Posted April 29, 2004 After years in the wilderness as far as speedway books go, it has been great that recently there has been such an upsurge in their production. Tribute websites are also a brilliant way of bringing back memories, I wonder how many people have just surfed in to a site because they used to go to speedway? Both of these areas of media are extremely important to speedway, time marches on far too quickly and information is easily lost, so getting the stories and history of our sport in print and to a far wider audience is of the utmost importance. Keep up the good work, there's plenty of people out there, including myself who really appreciate all the time and effort you put in .
norbold 7,162 Posted April 29, 2004 Thanks, bucket. I agree absolutely with what you say. Books, magazines and web sites all have valuable contributions to make, each in their own special and particular way. It's not a case of either/or but both/and. Genesis 0 Posted April 29, 2004 Hi all, as I originated this thread I felt I would like to chip in my own thoughts. My era of regular speedway following was early to mid 70's [Reading, Weymouth, White City] first through watching the Uncle of a good friend who rode [that was Jack Walker] and then meeting my future wife whose family went reguarly. Through other interests developing, having a family and running my business I had not been to a meeting since the final White City one! In the past couple of years my interest had been awakened to a degree by the coverage on Sky and that brought me to follow Poole Pirates, as I spend as much time -in short breaks -as I can manage down there during the good weather. [Next move is to try to move down there lock, stock & boat!] The speedway interst on my wifes family's side came from my Mother-in-Laws Aunts, Eastenders through & through who were avid Hammers fans. As I had been a West Ham United football supporter since I was nine I was a good 'un in their eyes and their tales of 40 & 50000 crowds were unbelievable to hear. Any how, having lost the Mother in Law a year ago tomorrow, going through posessions I came across Speedway memorabilia left to her by the Aunts including a reasonable amount of photographs, supporters badges and programmes. It did not take too long using the internet to track you lot and here we are. I've been able to share some of the photos on the New Cross website and you lot have come up with names to faces I had never seen before. A long winded way of a 'newcomer' saying that it is important that we maintain the history of the sport and anything I have got is freely available to any website or photo site any one creates or runs. Just to finish I have also quickly got hold of Hammerin' Round, Friday at Eight, Speedway in London and Homes of British Speedway all of which have been excellent buys even if they can only convey a fraction of the information and atmosphere that a new boy can comprehend. If there are any others worth getting, please let me know. Didn't mean to make such a speech but cheers for now and thanks again to all for their info! Over the years - this was originally posted some 13 years ago - these sites appear to have "...vanished into the ether..." Out of interest, can any other BSF member manage to enter them? They look extremely interesting and I would like to view what is on offer. My profound thanks for any advice. Edited June 5, 2017 by Guest
iris123 21,075 Posted June 5, 2017 Maybe like other sites recently there was a compatability problem?Maybe the person running the sites lost interest. The guy was your old New Cross pal Jim Blanchard.Maybe ask him?
Guest Posted June 5, 2017 (edited) I could be completely mistaken here - I usually am (old age and all that!) - but I seem to have memories from about 10-12 years ago of a history site run by a person in Italy! Again, I could be wrong, but I am certain the websites title included the word MARS in it (...and don't 'bar' me for that comment!). I have tried a GOOGLE search but nothing came forward.
