I've always thought that starters needed to be more firm with riders - 99% of the time they may as well not be there, for all the notice riders take of them. The starting marshall is - whether you like it or not - the referee's representative on the line. If you don't agree with him, you take it up with the referee afterwards. It's not a perfect system - pairs of referees would be better but cost-prohibitive - but it's what we've got. I was a hundred miles away and obviously didn't see it but if this is what it takes for a starting marshall to get a rider to do as he's bloody well told, then good on him!

I would watch NL racing if there was a track nearer to me. I still think the answer is mandated Junior League racing at EL and PL tracks that don't have curfews, with off-dates being used for NL -level challenges like Birmingham are doing.

To me, because I started with speedway in '88, Hackeny Hawks sounds odd - Hackney Kestrels is more up my alley Anyway, I hope that one day the Hawks/Kestrels ride again, hopefully at their own stadium (Upton Park's soon going to vacant ), and that a new Andy Galvin, Paul Whitaker, Steve Schofield, or Michael Warren will emerge from their ranks.

Sorry, git a little mixed up. Bears was used up to '48, when they moved north to Newcastle. It was revived in '61, until '64 when they moved to Halifax. There was then no league speedway in Middlesbrough until the Teessiders in '68.

From '68 to '72 they were the Teessiders. Bears was pre-'61 and from '89 to '96.
