Wimbledon Dons...back from the dead?!!
naffer replied to WookieboyDon's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Very true The new Coventry City football club owner is quoted as saying every championship club loses £10-£15 millions a year. Not really viable is it . lets accentuate the positives FFS. Speedway and stock cars will work at Brandon it was never empty, the average crowd in 2016 for stocks and speedway was just over 2000 as reported in the planning appeal. All the best for the Dons as well, this new venue sounds very suitable . Up the Bees and Dons -
I don’t think Rugby BC would go down this route if they didn’t have all their ducks in a row legally. Brandon estates are in a corner now trying to play poker with no cards. It’s certainly a pivotal time , looking back at the closing statements from the appeal even hooper from the dark side BE admitted that a compulsory order compensation could be zero due to the investment needed to return Brandon to a motorsports venue. So take the offer that’s been made already. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome. up the bees

Compulsory purchase order

Of course the ball remains in Brandon Estates court, the statement from the campaign group acknowledges that. A housing development is also delusional at this stage. Can Brandon Estates wait for 20 years or so to get something back from their speculative purchase? What is the land worth now 20 acres of Greenfield or Brownfield not sure, with a massive clean up needed . Im sure its in Brandon Estates interest to negotiate for some return now and retain the development potential if motorsports fail in the future removing the need to protect the stadium. You have to retain hope anything else is just embittered. up the bees

His head completely in the clouds regarding the Alexander stadium! £6,000 rent per meeting, meaning tickets for his 600 crowdwould have to start at £100 before you even get tothinking about paying riders, cloud cuckoo land, ……………………. i make that £10 per head The rest might be right to be fair.

The alternate venue route was looked at but dismissed as futile. There was a site put forward near Brandon village, away from any built up areas, it was eco friendly etc but failed at the first hurdle and considered inappropriate not worthy of even trying for planning. Other sites were explored but it was deemed the best chance was to remain at the site that has the permission to run motorsports. I do get the impression though that this will be resolved one way or the other this year.

Of course it’s a challenge and can go either way but there is hope. Rugby BC are backing the return of motorsports. There is a consortium with the relevant funds and expertise to manage the project And we have Cecil up the bees

Well done to the savePeterborough team there is always hope if you can stop the houses. Same ruling won the day at Brandon and I know the real battle lies ahead.

I think one of the local MPs was pushing the idea as a compromise situation at the very beginning before Brandon estates put in the planning application
-
I would imagine the only thing Brandon estates would consider is a scaled down residential development that leaves the stadium intact and able to continue. Shades of Swindon though. up the bees

Absolutely this Brandon estates only hope is that stock cars and speedway somehow disappears at some stage in the future removing the loss of the stadium argument. But as the toadmeister said before have they deep enough pockets to keep losing money. they bought the land evicted motorsports and have had no return on it for seven years ,only costs. maybe it’s loose change for BE maybe not up the bees

The campaign group have used the term "coats for goalposts" in their vision for getting speedway back again . on a YouTube clip after the recent enquiry victory Jeff Davies stated that the back straight stand would be refurbished along the back straight terracing giving a 3,000 capacity. A structural survey would be undertaken on the main grandstand to ascertain what's to be done with that . Fingers crossed it happens yes I know for the doom and gloom merchants we don't own it they can land bank it etc Up the bees

Absolutely DJ This would be like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. anyways the councillors at the planning meeting in 2022 concurred that houses at Brandon were not appropriate ,namely the token affordable houses ,as the local amenities were lacking and residents would be relying on a not so good bus route . kudos to the campaign group. What next for BE ?? I don’t know if they can do much now but sit on it ,but that’s not much of a plan is it ,no development possible its a liability for them now such a shame. At some stage they will need to cut and run and get something back from their speculative purchase. SCS 5 BE 1 November 22 SCS 5 BE 1 19th Jan 24 up the bees

New sites were looked at ,one particular one was Brandon village way close to the A45. but that one was ruled out there were others I’m sure but I forget now it’s been so long. whatever happens what a fantastic campaign that has been fought by the SCS group . Kudos to JD and the team.

Might well be right I was going in the original info before the 3 week delay

I think the SCS group said a verdict would be in about 2 weeks after the final day of the appeal
