David Howe Annonces His Retitrement
Bunce replied to Sotonian's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Thank you David for all the entertainment you have given us fans over many years. I well remember your short time with the Kings Lynn Team, you had a storming start, sadly cut short by injury. What ever you decide to do in the future, may I wish you health and happiness, and if you are in the Kings Lynn area, don't forget to pop in and see us on a Wednesday night! -
If You Could Bring Back One Rider...
Bunce replied to TonyMac's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
For me, it has to be "Cowboy" John Cook, what a great entertainer, and such a spectacular rider to watch. -
Bryan Tungates funeral is to take place at St Faiths Crematorium, Manor Rd, Horsham St Faith near Norwich NR10 3LF, on Friday 13th March at 1-15pm. Everybody is welcome to pay their last respects to Bryan, but Family Flowers only please. There should be a tribute to Bryan in this Wednesdays Eastern Evening News from Derek James, who often writes speedway articles for the newspaper.

It is with great saddness, that I have to report the passing of Bryan Tungate aged 75. Bryan lived all his life in Mulbarton near Norwich, and from an early age became involved with the local cycle speedway scene. He then became a lifelong supporter of Norwich Speedway, and an authority on the history of this famous team. Despite his age, Bryan embraced the internet, and many of you may have seen his postings on the various speedway web sites devoted to years gone by. His recall of individual riders, and even matches, was a joy to behold. When the Norwich Speedway Supporters Club was re-formed in the 1970's, Bryan was one of the first to join, and in later years I had the pleasure of serving on the committee along with Bryan. When Bryan was being made redundant several years ago, I asked him what he was planning to do? Typical of him, he replied...."Become a professional speedway watcher" True to his word, he could often be seen at Kings Lynn or Mildenhall, instantly recognisable with his long flowing white beard. He liked nothing better than a chat about his beloved "Stars" and it is sad that he never got to see the team ride again at a new track in Norwich. I will miss his cheerful smile, and the chats we used to have and would like to pay tribute to one of the sports great characters. RIP Bryan. David Lomas.

Crazy Sue And Her Gang Of Updaters And Texters
Bunce replied to jrs's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I'd like to add my sincere thanks to Sue and all the gang for this wonderful service. I think we all take it for granted, that there will be live updates from all matches, without thinking of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to secure a texter and updater, sometimes at the last minute! I go back to the days, when I would have to wait until the next days Daily Mirror, when I would rush to the sports section to see how my team got on at an away match the previous night. How times have changed! Thanks again Sue, and roll on 2015 -
Darren Mallett Announces Immediate Retirement.
Bunce replied to Mimmo's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Well said Mimmo! I endorse every word. I've watched Darren riding for many years now, and I'm sure all Kings Lynn fans will want to wish him the best for the future, in what ever he decides to do. Darren has suffered far to many injuries over the years, and it says something about his guts and determination, that he always come back to entertain us. A more likeable guy you could not wish to meet, he always has a smile on his face, and has time to chat to his many supporters. Good luck for the future Darren, and a huge thank you for all the entertainment and dedication you have shown over many years. You will be missed on the track, but I'm sure you will still be seen on the terraces at Saddlebow Road. Once this sport gets in your blood, its difficult to shake off! -
I wonder what would have happened if he hadn't been selected for a random breath test? Would he have still ridden under the influence?

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. It must have been a marching tune, as I remember the track staff always "marched" in tune to the music, from the pits out to the centre green. As much of the old Norwich tradition was carried over to Kings Lynn, such as the Stars name, the green and yellow colours, and even the lighting I believe, It wouldn't surprise me if "Old Comrades" was also used? Bill Smith would have been the one to ask, but sadly he is no longer with us. It definitely wasn't the Post Horn gallop, as that is played at 100 mph (just listen to it on You Tube!) the staff would have to run at high speed to keep in time with that! Its part of the William Tell Overture, that is played as the riders come up to the tapes. It used to be used as the riders came to the tapes at Foxhall Heath as well, I believe? Once again I You Tubed that, and its definitely the Finale part of the overture, as they come to the tapes. So I think we are still looking at the Old Comrades as the most likely march out music, unless anybody knows it was a different tune.
-
This is an urgent request to try and find out what the theme tune was, that was played as the track staff marched out at the beginning of the early Kings Lynn matches. Pam Hedge (wife of Trevor) contacted me, thinking it would be nice to have this played at Alan Littlechilds Funeral this coming Tuesday. I must have heard it lots of times, but cannot remember its name. I do know at Norwich Speedway, it was "Old Comrades" but not sure about the Lynn one. Anybody with a good memory? I know its cutting it fine, time wise, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Very sad news. I have fond memories of Simmo's time with us at Kings Lynn. A great rider, and true entertainer. My condolences go to all his family at this very sad time. RIP Simmo, and thanks from all the fans at Kings Lynn Speedway.

Pre-season International Speedway Cup
Bunce replied to PolskiZuzel's topic in International World of Speedway
Thanks to those who confirmed my suspicion that the match had vanished from the Polsat schedule. I thought I was doing something wrong! I'll remember that "Zuzel" is Speedway for future reference. The good news is, that I can now go to the meeting, as my Missus has got a lift tonight, and my car will be free. Should be a good match, with the weather forecast being dry mild and breezy for tonight. -
Pre-season International Speedway Cup
Bunce replied to PolskiZuzel's topic in International World of Speedway
Could somebody please explain the layout of the Polsat website, in case I need to watch the match live. I'm hoping to go, but may have to pull out at the last minute due to lack of transport. My Polish language skills are nil, and I was wondering how I find the link to the match on the site? Lots of columns to negotiate there, all in Polish! Clicked on the Program TV tab, selected March 19th, but scrolling down there is no mention of Kings Lynn or Speedway? Am I missing something, as other posters seem to indicate there will be a live stream to the match. Thanks in anticipation. -
A fitting tribute Philip, to a great man who will be sadly missed by all in the Speedway World. As a keen photographer, I always marvelled at Alf's pictures. To take action shots of a fast moving bike, with the awful floodlights of years ago, must have been a challenge even with a powerful flashgun. I had the pleasure of chatting to Alf a few years back at the Annual Veteran Speedway riders dinner in Norwich (now World Speedway Riders) As usual Alf was armed with a large expensive camera, and I was armed with a small inexpensive camera! He still found the time to come over and chat about photography with me, whilst I admired his camera. He gave me lots of tips, which I've put to good use now that I've moved up to the big expensive camera! I would like to send my condolences to all his family at this sad time.

Mildenhall V Dudley - National Shield 1st Leg - Sunday 7th April
Bunce replied to PhilK's topic in National League Speedway
Thanks Kevin for explaining in great detail what went wrong on Sunday. I'm sure everybody concerned with the starting gate, electrics and presentation will be trying extra hard to prevent a repeat of the delays for the next meeting. I guess what frustrates me is that these delays seem to be part and parcel of a Speedway match. Most fans just put up with it, because thats the way its always been. I wasn't picking on Mildenhall, as I've seen it at dozens of other tracks as well. Imagine if a football match kicked off at 3-25pm instead of 3pm, it would make the national headlines! I was watching from the middle of the back straight, and the speakers were plenty loud enough there. A tad too loud actually, which did cause a little distortion at times. At least everything could be heard! Certain delays cannot be predicted, such as crashes and rider injuries, but equipment failures really shouldn't happen so frequently. I'm sure lessons have been learned, and lets all strive to make things better for the future. Apart from those delays, I enjoyed the meeting and wish all the Fen Tigers a great season. -
Mildenhall V Dudley - National Shield 1st Leg - Sunday 7th April
Bunce replied to PhilK's topic in National League Speedway
Just back from Mildenhall, and here are a couple of my thoughts on the proceedings. It was a close match with nothing much between the teams. 100% effort from all the lads on both sides, and it was nice to see a good crowd of Dudley supporters there. Dudley ran out the winners and deserved their victory. Now for the bad bits! If this was my first ever Speedway meeting, I probably wouldn't bother again. I thought it was supposed to "start" at 4-30pm? Well there didn't seem to be any interest to get the show on the road, and it was almost 5pm before we saw the first race after there was a problem with the green light not working. The next delay was the so called "new" starting gate failing. More sitting around as the sun dropped and the temperature went with it. I looked at my watch and it was 5-50pm. So far I had seen only 5 races, thats less than 5 minutes of racing in an hour and twenty minutes! Various other delays for falls and stoppages, and I must admit I was glad when it was all over. Now you would have thought all these things would have been checked numerous times to make sure they all functioned perfectly before the meeting? Will I be going back for the next match? I somehow doubt it. Maybe this was just a one off, but as I said at the beginning, if this was my first Speedway meeting, it would have been my last. I hate being critical of the sport I love, but until we get slicker presentation, meetings that start dead on time, and promoters that check everything works BEFORE the meeting starts, speedway will continue to be a minority sport with falling crowd levels. -
Buster was interviewed on Radio Norfolk today, and as Ben just said, the postponement is due to a misunderstanding about the fence. I suspect that the current "new style" fence used by Buster is not approved for World Cup events, and he has to take it down and put up a normal airfence, which will take some time. I may be wrong, but that would be my guess.

Mildenhall Fen Tigers V Isle Of Wight Islanders
Bunce replied to rhidassa's topic in National League Speedway
"Does Anybody Know What The Weather Forcast Is For Today Please" I would think warm and sunny if Norwich is anything to go by. Met office picture shows clear skies, plenty of sun with a strong breeze. At 10-30am here, about one hour from Mildenhall, its glorious sunshine, blue skies and about 23c. -
Mildura Live Steam Pay Per View
Bunce replied to spiderweb's topic in International World of Speedway
Thanks for the info Rod. Using the link via the Australian Speedway web site worked a treat. I've just realised though that the meeting being streamed is the 2nd round from Mildura and not the Final from Gillman next Saturday. Unfortunately I'll be at work this Wednesday, so wouldn't be able to watch it. Of course I'm at home next saturday, and thats the meeting NOT being covered! (except on Radio Fremantle) Thanks again for that, it was a great help, but sadly it looks as if I'll have to give it a miss unless they cover the Final. Regards....Dave (Norwich-UK) -
Mildura Live Steam Pay Per View
Bunce replied to spiderweb's topic in International World of Speedway
Tried that link Spiderweb, but it didn't work. Eventually got to the site by deleting part of the end of the link you posted, but although it lists the Final from Mildura with a "Buy Now" button, when I clicked on it...nothing happened! Any ideas? Dave. -
Does anybody know the full line up for tomorrows meeting at Newcastle? I realise the 6 lads from todays meeting at Gosford will be joining the party, but I couldn't remember the rest of the line up for the Championship rounds. I guess I could trawl through the Aussie web sites, but time is against me before the next meeting. If any kind soul could post them here, I'd be mighty grateful. Still can't get over the fact I was laying in bed this morning, listening to a live speedway meeting from Australia! Isn't the Internet great!!! Dave.

Fantastic live coverage from Radio Fremantle. Great to see Kozza and Darcy both qualify, looking forward to seeing them both at Lynn this year. Good to hear Darcy's Mum on the broadcast talking to Nev. Super smooth streaming with no drop outs on the broadcast. Thanks to Nev and Brendan and all the team for making this possible. Looking forward to the next broadcast. Dave.

It might do in a normal English sentence Hector, but not in an email adrress or a web site address. Its not a wind up, but a serious comment. I've just checked my email address book, and not one address ends with a full stop! As I said to Chris, I'm pretty sure you leave the full stop off the end of email and web site addresses, and I have had mail rejected by that simple dot. Any computer experts out there that can confirm that?
-
speedway@radiofremantlelive.com. Not sure if you should have a full stop after the "com" Chris? Normally email addresses don't have one either after com or co.uk It can actually lead to the email bouncing back as I've found to my cost! Perhaps you could just confirm that? Look forward to hearing the next commentary, lets hope the streaming problems can be overcome before then. I'd love to know how many fans tuned in to the first broadcast, is there any way of telling?

Thanks to everybody at both Radio Freemantle and others for the various postings to keep us all up to date with the meeting. I'm hoping Trevor Harding is OK after his fall, we need him at Kings Lynn next year! Also hope Taylor Poole recovers from what sounded to be some nasty injuries. Thanks again to everybody.

Thanks for the update Spiderweb, its a bit difficult to follow with the streaming problem, so thats very welcome. It fills in the bits I've missed.
