  1. That's a very interesting article, pf, but I'm not sure about the dates. As far as I know, Lionel Van Praag, for example, was not one of the very early Australian arrivals in this country. He came over in 1931 when the sport was fairly well established. Bluey Wilkinson was earlier, but not one of the earliest. 1929 I believe was his first year in this country. Still, some good stuff and you must be excited to find your father was one of the pioneers.
  2. But it is Norway! How much is going to the right airport worth?
  3. If you want to go on Wednesday 1 October and come back on Sunday 5 October, you can get free flights to Oslo from Ryanair. Just thought I'd mention it.....
  4. In the photograph I have of him he has a little goatee type beard. I'll e-mail you a copy if you let me have your e-mail address.
  5. There's a good one of him in "Speedway in the South East" I believe...
  6. Perhaps your uncle Ted saw a ghost, Shazzy. Nothing would surprise me where Tyburn is concerned!
  7. I have been trying to remember why I thought Tyburn Gallows was no longer with us and have just discovered where I got this - obviously erroneous - information from. He is marked as such in the 1999 list of members of the Veteran Riders Association. (It's the latest one I have). Does anyone have a more up to date list where this has been corrected? Steve? And yes, Tyburn Gallows did ride for Canterbury in 1968. In fact he took part in the first-ever race in the British League Second Division, lining up with Lex Milloy against Taffy Owen and Ken Eyre of Belle Vue Colts. I won't embarrass Shazzy or Steve by revealing the score!

    White Ghost

Don't know if this is the right thread to continue this but I can highly recommend kiwi's magazine. I've taken out my subscription. (Have you got my letter yet?). It's very well produced with lots of interesting info on New Zealand riders in England or at sea in Maury Dunn's case! Well worth the £10 subscription.
  9. Thanks Shazzy. He changed his name by deed pole because the Control Board wouldn't let him use the name Tyburn Gallows. Once he'd done that, of course, they couldn't stop him. But they did get their own way over banning him from wearing a 'Ban the Bomb' motif on his race jacket!

    White Ghost

Welcome back, kiwi! Yes, it is an excellent book. I can highly recommend it.
  11. Thanks for reminding me Jeff. Yes, he was also third in 1969, behind Mauger and Barry Briggs. He was also a member of Sweden's World Team Cup winning teams in 1962 (with Ove Fundin, Bjorn Knutsson, Rune Sormander and Gote Nordin), 1964 (same team) and 1970 (with Michanek, Fundin and Bengt Jansson).
  12. Soren Sjosten was an excellent rider. He came third in the 1974 World Championship behind Anders Michanek and Ivan Mauger. He also won the World Best Pairs in 1974 with Michanek.
  13. Yes. And as far as I know he didn't ride for Hackney, Rayleigh or Rye House in the 70s. He was a 60s rider at Rye House and Canterbury. Perhaps it is someone else using his name and I was right in the first place???
  14. Anyway, where would us historians be without filled in programmes to look back on?
  15. Well I thought he had, but I have just come across this in a guest book on a web site: Apr 24th 2003 at 02:51:49 PM What is your name? TYBURN GALLOWS How did you find this Web Site? VIA IVAN MAUGER Where are you from? ENGLAND Do you have any comments? RODE FOR HACKNEY HAWKS AND RAYLEIGH/RYE HOUSE ROCKETS IN THE 1970s AND KNEW MOST OF THE DADS OF THE LADS RIDING TODAY. GOOD SITE NICE PICTURES. WILL CHECK BACK AGAIN SOON. Hmmm..... Shazzy, help!
  16. I'm afraid he is no longer with us, having been called to that great scaffold in the sky.
  17. Do you know if that is actually true, Shazzy, or was it another of his fantasies? Tyburn Gallows was a nutcase!!!
  18. The Czech Republic might lack the experience of say Sweden but I think the experience of the last two weeks says it all as far as track laying is concerned. What about South America? Brazil, Argentina? Must be scope there. Maybe thay can produce the Pele of speedway (or the Maradonna).
  19. Certainly nothing I saw tonight will make me change that opinion. He is in a class of his own at the moment...and that includes Rickardsson.
  20. Well, I hope Crumpy wins, because he deserves to be World Champion this year on account of the fact he is the best rider in the World at the moment. (Any comment Gem!? I know you are a great fan of his.) Prediction: 1. Crump 2. Rickardsson 3. Hancock 4. Adams
  21. The programme goes out on BBC 1 Scotland on September 19th. at 6.30pm The programme is available to all through Sky television. (Thanks to Jim for the info)
  22. I agree they should bring back the Challenge Round. They only did away with it in the first place to stop Andy Smith qualifying. The problem with the present system is that current GP riders who are not sure of getting in the Top 10 have to go through the World Championship Qualifying Rounds, but then if they do make the Top 10 they are doubly qualified and their entry in the qualifying rounds would have been a waste of time. Anyone who is in the current Grand Prix should be given a chance of retaining their place without having to go through the qualifying rounds. (Either that or everyone should go through a qualifying process like the old one-off days).
  23. Good prediction. You're not Tony Millard in disguise are you?
  24. Phil Bishop's picture is on the spine of Speedway in the South East (ISBN 0 7524 2725 3) as well as a number inside including one of him receiving the £50 Gold Trophy at High Beech in 1930 from Mrs W J Cearns.
