Posf1 - Belle Vue Aces Vs Swindon Robins, 14 Sep 2015
stratton replied to Steve0's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
A poor nights racing for me,the track not the best well done to the Aces though and 14 points will be tough to peg back.Without Darcy lets be honest this Robins side is not good anough we still have a sniff on Monday night but it will be very tough to overall that fourteen points deficit. -

Knutsson aged 29 was approaching his peak when he retired so he could of won more titles.Moore,Mauger,Briggs,Olsen, Knutsson,Fundin,Plechanov,Craven were the real cream for me from 1955 until 1970.Others like the Boocock bros,Wilson,Michanek,Sjosten,Banger Jansson would get a mention as well and i am sure i have missed loads out that others rate to. -

Yes i believe he would of won it Olsen if he had not of fell in one race maybe would of been his nearest rival that night.Would 13 or 14 points been anough that night probably, for him to of won a fifth title would of been great. But it did tarnish Briggos career and he did well to comeback to ride to a half decent level after with those horrific injuries. -
Weird really i ended up supporting the Racers in that period as well there was never any needle between Reading and Swindon not really the only time i can remember is in 1980 Autrey rode a incident between Briggs ( Jnr) Gresham,Spinka that got heated. After that i loved the 3TT meeting's with Oxford as well great days i loved the two meetings in one day.

I do miss those Reading meeting's and used to go to every Smallmead meeting there 1984/89 when Mad Wellie rode there loved it followed Per as well really great on those Monday nights.

Your opinion Norbold i have so much respect for,and you are right Fundin his stats are amazing to be honest.Ove's record 15 final appearances (1954/69 missed 1966 banned.Barry's record 18 finals (1954/70 ( missed 71 Ole won Barry's last final 1972 both have incredible records.I do think Barry was the better of the two from 68 to 70 but both are legends, "Norbold how good was Briggs around the big West HAM in your opinion.? Also is it right ? did Craven have a great record against Fundin at Hyde Rd my uncle told me Ove road the line alot there and Craven's head to head record against Ove was very good indeed. My uncle Norbold is to blame for me being very bias when Briggo is concerned. -
Totally agree unlike today a chosen few a closed shop,

Barry was the better rider for me,Craven if he had of lived would of been a threat he was anyway he had already WON two titles. -

Fundin? maybe third? Moore i think i judge him from 1955 onwards a great rider though.I think Briggs would of beat Ove over 12 rounds would of been close Craven WELL could of put a dent into both of them and the great man still won two titles. -
What is wrong with Eastie? a great racing track.!!!?

Great post Joe in a way it is impossible to compare era's your point about Lee is spot on Wembley for example never suited him unlike Gothenburg with its long straights. If the GP system was in place in yesteryear i recon it would of been a great spectacle.like today's series is. -
Brilliant i am glad this is true Buzz,it will hurt when the old place goes the track especially but i won't miss those filthy old bogs over the far side.Times move on i just hope the track is a reasonable size Somerset esq)? if we are all honest the old place is looking tired now but those great memories for me will always be there of the old place.

I thought it was Eastbourne "sommelier"!!

When i was working for the Council years ago in my teens, i used to work at the Whitworth rd cemetary three times a week.As you go in Teo is laid to rest just as you go through the gates. It was always kept lovely and i believe Teo's daughter still lives in Swindon and that she has changed her second name the reason i don't know why.Teo as a man/rider was very popular was proud to live in England and by all accounts a chirpy character fascinating that he contested the British WC rounds and he reached a final once at reserve. He is still in the hearts of the older generation who still go to the abbey and it would be nice if Teo is mentioned in the final ever meeting at the old Abbey.

For me Joe in that class of line up i could not put Sam anywhere near the rostrum places ( only my humble opinion !!!) he had a great career though but he was not a favourite of mine.I can remember him coming over to Poole riding with Mike Lee he was erratic and that is a understatement. -

He is the man WK ,i have the speedway stars but they are everywhere take me a month to go through them. -
I think Custom you are spot on, he was in control of his own destiny and we should all respect it.Going off subject that's why Marciano 49/0 for me was a sporting hero of mine he promised his mum he would quit and stuck to it.He was offered millions to comeback and try to get to 50/0 he said No he would of been offered massive sums.Penhall went out on his terms i know he was lucky against Carter but under pressure which in 82 for him in the Usa was huge he was great at handling it.

KNUTSSON? was some rider,i never see him ride, Bjorn, Plechanov were two riders i would of loved to see live.Bjorn only winning one title shows how good my hero Briggo was that era with Ove was pretty special with Craven as well.Going back to Igor he was a great rider and his style reminds me of Emil to a degree today. -
The strange thing for me aces1" that he was approaching his peak,he was not on the slide, but i always had a sneaky feeling he was not totally in love with racing.
