Krasnikov retired from the World Championships after his 8th win in 2012. He continues to ride in Russia as Rider/Coach of Ufa, and intends to contest the European Championship this year as he has never won that - his best is 2nd in 2002 and 2013. He rides as a wild card this weekend as he won the Russian Championship last month. He will ride in Berlin as part of the Russian Team in the Team Final, and still rides in open meetings as his presence gets the bums on seats as they say. But he is without a doubt the greatest rider ever. -

I've just heard that Antonin Svab died on the 21st November aged 82. He was the first non-Soviet rider to win the World Ice Speedway Championship in 1970, and was an acomplished Motorcyclist in several disciplines, representing the Czechoslavakia. His son, Antonin Svab Jr. was a speedway rider who rode in Poland and the UK, but was injured in 2006 and forced to retire.

Reading between the lines, the Ice Plant is just one factor. I'm guessing the owners DeBonte Wever want shut of the venue, as it gets in the way of running their Hotel. After all, they are saying they are making 'substantial losses' by having it. On a positive note, I spoke to some people from the club, and they are 'Actively seeking' a new venue. It's quite possible the venue may change in 2016, but Ice Speedway is not lost to the Netherlands, yet! -

Spent the day chasing this story but as DGT says, the Assen event will go ahead but it will be the last event at this venue. The club are actively looking for a new venue but as I was told, "Ice Speedway is expensive to stage, and the rules may not allow some of the stadiums to be used for it." So if you've never been to Assen, next year may be your last chance! -

2015 Ice Speedway Gladiators
Conkers replied to customhouseregular's topic in International World of Speedway
This year is my 30th covering Ice Speedway which started at Assen in 1985. Been there almost every year since. If you want a stadium seat, then book early, but if you like to stand, you can get really close to the action. The track is covered, and whilst the track is 400mtrs, the Stadium itself is quite compact. The stadium is on the edge of town and easily reached from the Station, and if you are driving its quite close to the A28 main highway. If you want to stay in Assen, there are a few Hotels (which book up early) and a number of B&Bs where you can stay, or stay in Groningen, 30 minutes on the train away, and with the last trains around 11.30, it's only a 15 minute walk from track to Station. There are three nights of racing and the Friday meeting, the Roloef Thijs Bokaal, is a chance to see riders who are outside the World Championship, yet are just as spectacular, with some very unpredictable racing. Both Travel Plus and Eurorider do trips from the UK, staying in Groningen, although The Netherlands is quite easy to get to. As DutchGrassTrack says, you are only a 2 hour train ride from Amsterdam. In the last few years I've done the plane/train route - off the plane and onto the train. Hope this helps. -

Khazakstan staged the 1989 Ice Speedway Individual Final which was won by the late Nikolai Nitschenko, and Kazakstan also staged a round of the 1994 Ice Speedway Grand Prix series. On both occasions the meetings were held in the Medeo Stadium, which I understand will be the venus this year. A team from Khazakstan rode in the 1994 Team final consisting of Stanislav Kusnetsov, Vladimir Cheblakov and Nikolai Popov. If I remember correctly, they were Russians who rode on Kazakstan licences, as after the break up of the Soviet Union, Russian riders started to migrate to where they could get licences. I do have a provisional fixture list for the forthcoming season: Individual: Challenge Meeting: TBC Halstavik, Sweden R1/2 Jan 31/Feb 1 Krasnagorsk, Russia R3/4 Feb 7/8 Togliatti Russia R5/6 Feb 15/16 Alma Ata, Khazakstan R7/8 Mar 7/8 Assen, Netherlands R9/10 Mar 14/15 Inzell, Germany Team Final Feb 28/Mar 1 Berlin, Germany European Feb 21/22 Lukhovitsy, Russia This will be confirmed as soon as I know it, and I will post a Russian Fixture list when I know it. -
BUXTON'S home National League match against Kent on Sunday has been postponed due to a waterlogged track. A new date is to be confirmed.

In the same week when Ice Speedway had already lost Russia's Andrei Gavrilkin, Poland's No. 1 Ice Racer is also killed. RIP Grzegorz. -
Russian Ice Speedway fans are mourning the loss of Andrei Gavrilkin, of Samara Ice Knights. He died following a road accident near his home in Saransk on 16th June, just days before his 24th Birthday. Gavrilkin was considered one of the best up and coming riders in Russia, winning the European Championship in 2009, aged 19. He was second in 2012, and has won the Cup of Russia for the last three years. Gavrilkin was born in Saransk, and started his career with his local club, before joining Samara in 2012. Reports from Russia say that Andrei was returning home from Togliatti, having signed a contract to ride for Mega-Lada in the 2014/15 season, when a truck collided head on with his car, and he was pronouced dead at the scene. His funeral will be held in Saransk on Wednesday 18th June.

Wondered why Bangma was tootling around at the back. You've answered that. I still think Ruben and Dirk are two to watch though, they both impressed me both times Ive seen them. I got the impression that Johnny was happy to lend them bikes. I understand Dirk rides in Berlin next weekend, so that should be interesting and it's a pity I have to earn otherwise I'd be there.

Robert Jan Bangma (Holland), Ruben deJong (Holland) (deJong withdrew from the meeting after a crash in practice which wrecked his machine) Hope you all enjoyed the Eurosport coverage, which I'll be watching later after I finish my work (still sorting out my pictures and reports from a long busy weekend). From the comments people have sent me on facebook, they finally realised what I've been banging the drum about for years. Some news about the injured riders: Both Rene Stellingwerf and Gunther Bauer are out for the rest of the season. Bauer shoved Stellingwerf into the fence on Saturday night, going for a gap that wasn't there, and Rene has a broken foot, and the spikes shredded part of his muscle, but I spoke to his wife on Sunday, and he wanted to ride, but the Doctors said no . However he is in good spirts and will make a full recovery. He should be home now. Bauer suffered a puncture which caused his fall on Sunday, and he has suffered a broken thumb, which rules him out of the German Championship, and the last round in Inzell. Also watch out for the name Dirk Werkman. He is a spectacular rider with bags of talent, and with Ruben deJong (who didn't ride in Assen after smashing his machine up in practice) the Dutch now have two young riders who are capable of going to the top of the pile in a few seasons!
-
I suspect Saturday's coverage will be on a time delay, as although it says "Live..." on the EPG, the meeting starts at 7pm CET, whereas the Sunday coverage will be shown 'as live' possibly editing out the track prep periods. Either way, it's been a long time since they showed Ice Racing on Eurosport, and even longer since they showed it in prime time, so it's long overdue such good coverage! I've also been told that both days from Inzell will be shown too, over the weekend of 22nd/23rd March

It's the three day Assen meeting this weekend, with the Roelof Thijs Bokaal on Friday 7th, followed by the Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship Final 3 on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th. Dutch Grasstrack, Jacqueline and myself will be there (along with a few others from the forum) and if you are going have a good time. We hope to have updates or at least the result as soon after the last heat depending on how good the WiFi is in the Press Room for those of you who aren't going but are interested in the results. Friday's RTB meeting line up has been finalised and here it is (courtesy of the http://ijsspeedway-assen.nl site) 1. Ruben de Jong (Netherlands) 2. Markus Jell (Germany) 3. Ronny Haring (Switzerland) 4. Lukáš Volejník (Czech Republic) 5. Mikko Jetsonen (Finland) 6. Robert-Jan Bangma (Netherlands) 7. Charly Ebner jr (Austria) 8. Daniel Henderson (Sweden) 9. Mikael Flodin (Sweden) 10. Thomas Wiest (Germany) 11. Dirk Werkman (Netherlands) 12. Mirosław Daniszewski (Poland) 13. Michał Knapp (Poland) 14. Lukáš Hutla (Czech Republic) 15. Simon Gartmann (Switzerland) 16. Gerrit Schukken (Netherlands) 17. Martin Posch (Austria) 18. Simon Reitsma (Netherlands) 19. Niclas Svensson Kallin Sweden 20. Andrej Diviš (Czech Republic) 21. Johann Weber (Germany) 22. Jimmy Olsen (Sweden) 23. Ove Ledström (Sweden) 24. Josef Kreuzberger (Austria) The top two Dutch riders from Friday night will be the reserves for the ISG Meeting, and if last years meeting is anything to go by, then this years should be a cracker! Niklas Svensson defends his title, and Reuben de Jong is also riding. If you've never seen him ride he is a phenomenal talent, finishing second in last years meeting. DeJong could have won had the final not been re-run, as he was leading Svensson, when Ove Ledstrom fell.
