Dean, I take it you had no idea it would go belly up at the end of the season?
-
Yes correct, the stadium was sold in early 1998 by receivers Grant Thornton and the team was forced to vacate.

Leicester Hounds/Leicester Stadium (1931 & 1937): Folded mid-season in 1931, with further issues in 1937. Liverpool Merseysiders/Chads (1937 & 1953): Withdrew mid-season in 1937; record expunged. Also closed in 1953. Ashfield Giants (1952): Closed during the 1952 season. Cradley Heath Heathens (1953): Disbanded mid-season in 1953 following the withdrawal of the promoter. Hackney Hawks (1983): Folded mid-season in 1983. Long Eaton Invaders (1997): Closed during the 1997 season. Trelawny Pitbulls (2003): Folded mid-season in 2003. Oxford Cheetahs (2007): Folded mid-season in 2007. Mildenhall Fen Tigers (2010): Experienced a mid-season closure in 2010. From Wikipedia, any takers in the Den?

That's my whole point Iain which some seem to miss. Only the brave invest in something with a long record of failure.

Wimbledon 1991? Rye House 2018? Hackney 1991? Newcastle 2022?
-
What if they hemorrhage money and Jack it mid season. Anyone remember Skegness?

Can we bin this idea about speedway at Northampton. It's going to be 5 teams at a push indeed if we (Ipswich) pull our fingers out and get it sorted. Other than that I reckon next winter we'll be in the same position only this time with 5 teams the hand will be forced. If any rightminded and sensible businessman wanted to open a speedway track then they would have done it by now without all the fuss and speculation. And indeed and most importantly they would be already marketing it as a going concern.

The championship teams (In this case the steerage passengers) are rowing away in the lifeboats, whilst the Premiership teams ( luxury passengers) are quaffing cigers and brandy convinced the ship won't sink!
-
I asked the question a couple of weeks ago for those of us a bit older! Can anyone remember the timescale (roughly of course) between the handover between Chris Shears and Dave Pavitt in 88/89. The only reason I ask is because I do remember some doubts about the club then? Including a suggestion we may have run out of Mildenhall.

Is Michael Aspall going to pop out with a red book tonight and introduce the new owner
-
No it's Cobblers!
-
Are you trying to make us depressed. After all we have been spoilt for choice these last few seasons.
-
Surely Iain any right minded business looking to back and sponsor speedway must be off their rocker?
-
I think the important thing to note is that with all the delays and speculation that the damage to the brand could be irreparable. It could be that you a small oil leak 3 years ago but now your engine has seized as you spoke about the repair but done naff all about it! ( I'm talking speedway in general and not just Ipswich).
-
From an historical point of view at the end of 1988 can anyone remember how long the takeover from Chris Shears to Dave Pavitt, Mike Western and JL took?
-
2026 Premiership is Go! - At least 5 teams
TB1 replied to RoundTheBoards's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Is it not logical to suggest the remaining 'top' riders will be in the lifeboats as the ship goes down. Thereby, forcing one league next year regardless? After all 16 league fixtures with arguably a dwindling fan base isn't conducive long term so more ' top ' riders will plan ahead. -
I would imagine the cost for any prospective promoter would be prohibitive, of course some contributors on here are far better qualified to judge then me. Just can't see it happening in all honesty but If they do push it over the line then fair play.
-
If the Ipswich deal doesn't go through the whole thing might implode.
-
Dean when your next on can you address the viewers with a set nail clippers close up lol 😆
-
Agreed, I still think there's a fly or two still in the ointment.
-
A reasonable interview but unfortunately lacking in substance. Now that could be for contractual reasons but who knows. Either way we are all left scratching our heads I feel.
-
Well the only thing I can say about this Northampton thing is cobblers!
-
Steady on Iain! Too many questions causes confusion lol
-
All I can say is the secret must be water tight, in most organisations there is usually a mole somewhere.
-
Ray Morton, I'm sure that's what Dave Lanning used to call him at Wimbledon.
