Unless my memory is playing tricks I remember a 16 year old Dave Jessup, along with a young Barry Thomas having after meeting rides one night at West Ham.
If a rider lost control and hit a stanchion or pit gate, the track is to blame.
If a rider hits a rut and crashes in to another rider, the track is to blame.
On a smooth track with an impact absorbing fence, any accidents are racing accidents.
Am I being too simplistic?.
This is turning in to something of a morbid subject, but now that it has been raised does anyone know if Hackney holds the very dubious record for track fatalities.
We all know speedway is dangerous but statistics like those above bring things to stark reality.
The transition from the "out of his depth" rider I saw at London White City, to the World Champion I saw at Wembley was amazing.
His early retirement was a real blow to the sport...he could have been right up there with the other multi-World Champions.
I was at Romford's opening meeting and fully agree.
As I understand it only one householder complained about the noise but he still got Romford shut down.
In modern speedway parlance, what constitutes a bumper crowd and/or a c**p crowd?.
I've been in a crowd of 92,000 (disputed) at Wembley and 3 men and a dog at Rye House.
That's my idea of bumper and c**p!.
