I was considering a Gary Glitter spot on Desert Island Discs. Certain songs by Maurice Chevalier, Gary Puckett, Billy J. Kramer, Mary Wells and The Supremes came to mind But then I thought this may be in bad taste so I decided against it.

Darcy Ward
customhouseregular replied to Seymour Dix's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I was bored with the Darcy Ward saga months ago. Did speedway miss him post-suspension? Will this year's GP series suffer without him. Assuming Ward is not picked for the Australian SWC team, will the Aussies get soundly beaten? Answers: No, No and No, -
Personally I am ambivalent about the venue...if Laguta, Sayfutdinov, Pedersen, Iversen and Kildermand are competing again, it will be fantastic wherever it is held

I see the USA are represented by Hancock and Manzares. It shows how far down the pole the Americans have slipped over the past 10 years or more. Yes, I know Hancock is World Champion but at 44 he is hardly the future of American speedway. Manzares is a youngster with very little International experience. Given that the USA are unlikely to win the cup, would it not have been better to have picked Wells and Fisher?. That's not to say Manzares will not prove to be America's next best thing, but perhaps it is too soon to be calling him America's No. 2.

I have to agree with you Telboy. As a regular visitor to Waterden Road back in the day, I must say there was some fantastic racing. I'm not sure about the danger angle...having sadly witnessed the Dave Wills and Tad Teodorowicz tragedies at West Ham I can't say Hackney was more dangerous. Tragedies have occurred at tracks everywhere, particularly 40+ years ago when safety standards were much lower, so I would not have labeled Hackney a death-trap.

Good to see Russia being stretched for once and being given some serious competition. I would love to see that heat 35 -
Poll: Age Of Speedway Fans....
customhouseregular replied to Phil's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
True SCB but given the BSF membership it is a small sample and, given the nature of this particular poll, does not tell us much. I agree...92% of 84 women is meaningless -
This sounds like one for Norbold.
-
A slight divergence...does anybody remember the old speedway commentaries on reel to reel tape, presented by Wally Loake I think.

You are quite possibly correct sommelier, but then again he would not be the first bright star to disappear from the sky. -
Poll: Age Of Speedway Fans....
customhouseregular replied to Phil's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
And hopefully you love it as much as ever There did seem to be plenty of girls and young ladies at meetings I attended way back when. If people are bothered to sign up and post, why be apathetic about a poll?. It takes 10 seconds to vote -
Poll: Age Of Speedway Fans....
customhouseregular replied to Phil's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Just voted and see that 174 votes cast...not enough to be a reliable sample but precious few under-25's. If people have not started following speedway by age 25, are they going to start at all?. It seems the majority of fans are male over 40...why is the sport not attractive to young people anymore?. When I was a regular in my teens and twenties there were large numbers of my peers at meetings. Hopefully a lot more members will vote so a truer picture may emerge. -

I have been a speedway fan since 1960 but find it impossible to attend meetings. Therefore I am ineligible to take part in your poll. -

West Ham's loss was Wolves' gain I feel. Norman was always good value. -

what about a Test Match between the Swedes and Danish pastries?. -
I rarely saw a bad meeting at Wimbledon during the late 60's and through the 70's.

Sayfutdinov having a change of heart, entering the GP qualifiers and becoming a GP regular, and becoming World Champion. Re him being a mercenary...Speedway riders careers can be very short and they all compete to make a living. Why is getting the best deal possible wrong?. Ok, club loyalty is great but it don't pay the bills.
