  1. My thoughts too marra.......just hoping a new venue can be found asap.......Derwent Park is to be demolished. Now speedway teams are 'revving up' I miss the Comets even more......especially last years magnificent 7.
  2. Thankyou.UTT By the way I didn't write the above....just copied it as I think it provides some useful info as to the Comets future, and perhaps reasons why 2019 suddenly/regretfully became a no-goer?
  3. So a fan at vicinty of stadium but not at match.......???......you met a scouser then.
  4. Team suits nope at Comets......do recall Chris Blythe always wore a Rugby shirt, usually flowing in the slipstream....easily recognisable.
  5. Best of luck to all teams, and fans, in 2019......ENJOY...
  6. Never forget................................................
  7. Brilliant wordsmith.......can we have one of these each week please?..might even stop getting SS in lieu.
  8. Ha ha.......I know where they belong...but!!!??
  9. Hey fellow marra.......pub holding that comp is at Santon Bridge...not Wasdale..don't want them in wrong place.
  10. meant to quote last line only sorry...............................when is he available?
  11. To be honest thought they already had......was certainly not easy to spot them at DP......best 'away support' now lost to the sport I'm afraid.
  12. Yes both figures were true enough, I was at both.....Speedway boasted bigger crowds than the Rugby League and soccer teams in their early/best years of each Ian Thomas inspired regime...... Crowded, well maybe ? tho DP can still host 10,000 speccies. By the way the attendances (for most of Comets meetings) were not all that bad given that Workington, and nearby Whitehaven, each have a population less than 30,000...pro rata the crowds were better than big town outfits.....although you could say the 'counter-attractions' were inferior
  13. For the original 'opening night' in April 1970 the crowd was approx 6,000..........settling to around 3,000 for the next 2/3 years...alas Speedway is a novelty sport that many fans choose to eventually ignore and the fight becomes harder in tandem.
  14. And daft as it sounds I used to think the crowds at Comets meetings were generally higher than 500......................I('ve) faithfully follow(ed) both teams at Derwent Park..a 'Townie since the 1960's..and used to be able to, quite accurately, name the attendance figures prior to them being announced. Maybe I need to go to 'Specsavers' because I've most certainly lost that inbuilt talent in recent times.....or have I ?
  15. There was an attendance of 901 at the Town match yesterday. A figure that would have possibly seen Comets workable???? The metal markers,on the track, would have been removed as per player safety obligations.
  16. Had a look at Derwent Park today.....work including painting, sweeping terraces, foliage removal - all busily happening. Sad though to see the markers on the speedway track indicating where the new playing surface for the new incumbent soccer outfit ,Workington 'Reds', will eventually be. A lot of the 'track' is going to be taken to allow Reds to play according to FA pitch requirements.......the 'markers' just sadly seemed some sort of final epitaph to a once great speedway track.
  17. This has been talked about for weeks now....hope it's just someones imagination. But it still doesn't look good for a Comets return to DP. So what can we do for our speedway fix, now, and in the future? It's just not the same coming on here knowing all that seems to appear are wind ups about other tracks etc. Jenga amuses me.......I've habitually logged on each day down the years having a good cuppa and read about the Comets.....it's not the same already, sadly I'm going to log off...and come back once in blue moon....
  18. So now the 2019 fixtures are out it makes the loss of Comets even more sad. Now being on the outside looking in at all the anticipated thrills, spills and excitement from those still operating a track is almost mind blowing...
  19. He did like the inside line that's for sure.......cutback expert bar none.
  20. Yeah a removable surface should work...it would possibly just be required on the home and back straights with the bends staying as per normal?
  21. Just been reading the Workington Town Rugby forum and there are a few mentions regarding the soccer team..the Reds...moving to Derwent Park in the summer, saying July, with therefore amendments being scheduled to the DP pitch area which will require grassing over of the speedway track. This of course just reaffirms what I was told at the Town match last Sunday - but it worries me greatly that the track could be lost forever? I hope not!!!!!!!!
