west Cumbrians watching Saturday night TV.....Having BQ's......Going to paddle at St.Bees.

You're about as funny as Keith Lemon, Lenny Henry,Toothache..................have you read the 'Football 2019/20' thread pal...no mention of Comets so right up your street.
-
Re Richard Weston; This Dick has always got to add his twopennorth re Comets non-existence.....you are spot on Tj with your solution for him....but let's talk Comets anyway and let them explode. It's actually keeping me interested enough....e.g. Until THJ mentioned it I wasn't aware Jengas family had held the promotion ropes at DP....?? I'll guess it was laal Eddy from Lowca..........but probably miles off...??????

I've always held the opinion that Speedway is a sort of novelty sport. In that I mean when a team debuts at it's own track a large crowd assembles. Many folk are interested in the actual racing, BUT another, large, percentage are only there to see thrills, SPILLS, and excitement...The match score being a secondary factor to those types. And they are unfortunately the fans who get bored quickly and lose interest thereby becoming ex fans....so that opening night figure of thousands dilutes to the hardcore support. When Ian Thomas, Stoney, Brent and co. revitalised the sport at Derwent Park in 1999 that opening crowd of, reportedly, 4,500 gradually receded over a couple of seasons to (reportedly) 1,200.....even with that figure Ian Thomas kept saying "the honeymoon at Workington is not over".......but in reality we could see the crowds dwindle. And in my own mind I had alarm bells ringing, don't think I was alone with that dark clouded view. Then sadly when there were/was crowd(s), of just *390 ( *quoted to me by the then announcer, a friend and soccer foe lol) then obviously all was not well, and the struggle was certainly so difficult for the promoters....however I still believe, that as indeed was proven by packed Grandstands in October 2018, that speedway deserves another chance at Workington.. .............hopefully our forum friend THJ is spot on regarding someone working toward this next new beginning. BELIEVE>>>>>>>>>

They gave us the best, most exciting, finish ever to a season.....e.g. The Glasgow all in a day drama, the massive cup recovery v the Monarchs, the Scunthorpe and Lakeside victories - all unforgettable........brilliant speedway. As said on here earlier it was those Saturday stay-aways who eventually did the major damage. I think you are correct though in that "it will never return"...I don't envisage the newly laid Derwent Park pitch being ripped up again to accomodate a speedway track...sadly not.

Haven't seen that interview.......but I still even now can see him coming through the pits gate into car park, we nearly collided, and despite all the euphoria of winning a trophy that night he had proper 'face ache'....to the extent that I almost asked what's the prob?...but quickly decided I wasn't gonna risk it.......
-
That's a sad fact........but you are a former fan who doesn't miss any of it......I think though maybe, in truth, you do...I haven't read all of your posts mind.

DID YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????

Just feel a bit confused about your 'free' days...in one post you say last 'free' entry was at BV versus Reading in 2006...then you show email circa 2007 including a mention above it of getting in 'free' in 2007 ( and "been to half the matches this year").....just as I said it's a bit confusing. Sadly I'm posting on a Saturday night (......unlike yourself I'm missing my former speedway fix.)

Yeah think you mean when Comets beat two teams from the 1st Div that 1976 season...Kings Lynn and Ipswich....many thought John Louis had let our Lou pass him tho.....no way did he do that... ...sad you didn't see the fearless Bob V.....mind he copped a few injuries with his brave style.
-
Nahhhhhh........the first star ever at Derwent Park was 'Mr Excitement'.....to gate or not to gate he wouldn't be beaten...... brilliant... Bob Valentine.. Always, understandably, the Comet crowd favourite.... Maybe a pity he was so good though as he stepped up to Sheffield Tigers after one great 1970 blast season at DP. Lou did come good.....but would only take the inside pass on....usually a cutback on bend one.

Yeah Penky still going strong and hopefully for a while yet, can change a game with his tactical skills. All my teenage/adult life I've been a visitor to Derwent Park...both for Worky Town RL and the wonderful Comets. It is still heartbreaking to not have speedway there anymore, and seeing the track disappear is awful. But I know many Town RL folk and it is they who say something might be stirring speedway style in the vicinity.......can't say more but???? -

Borough Park was first used in 1937. And Derwent Park's first full season was 1956/57.....a trial league match was played in 1955....so both had better days shall we say. -

Nope that's not the reason at all......or maybe it is...because it is not going to be built. The Allerdale council exec. have kicked the stadium plans into touch. -

Great memories...Joe Owen was the best visiting rider I've ever seen at Derwent Park...perfect balance at great speed..but my all time hero for the Comets was in the initial Ian Thomas/Geoff Brownhutt 1970 campaign....Mr. Excitement..Bob Valentine !!!!..he'd pass inside/ outside/any line.. I've been to many 'ramshackle' speedway venues for sure....lot worse than DP. Not sure how much Borough Park has declined coz I never watched Reds, but have been to the two Town matches held there last couple of weeks...seen worse to be honest. .....Derwent Park has slowly worn away...tho new plastic seats replaced the old wooden bottom achers not that long ago. -

Just for info......'Town' are the Rugby League club, based at Derwent Park...and currently play in League 1 (which is the bottom segment of pro RL)...the relegated Evostick team are the 'Reds' soccer team of Borough Park fame... lol. Both stadiums are well past their use by date. I attend Derwent Park to support Town, and was an avid Comets fan. -

Following the events of recent days, the directors wish to confirm our intentions regarding our home for the 2019-20 season. Immediately after Friday’s decision by Allerdale Borough Council not to proceed with the new stadium in its current form, we stated that it is our intention to remain at Borough Park for the immediate future. The position remains unchanged. Much work has been done behind the scenes to establish what actions are required to ensure Borough Park is a safe and viable place to play and watch football next season, and the Board has put in place an action plan to see the necessary works carried out throughout July and into August. Those works have an anticipated total cost in the region of £15,000, which the club will need to find in the near future. The spending outlined here is intended to ensure we can continue to play at Borough Park for the next twelve months, during which time we expect to see progress made on the longer term plan. The Board will be working closely with contractors to minimise the cost of the essential works and will be looking to secure additional income to protect the playing budget for the forthcoming season. Meanwhile, positive talks were held with ABC and Workington Town on Monday and it is clear there is a determination and commitment from all parties to see sporting facilities improved in Workington. (Taken from the Reds site.........................................So the speedway track was sacrificed for what...????) -

Don't see that happening, not even in 10 years.....but if Derwent Park becomes permanent home to both clubs, as seems more than likely, I therefore can see hope for a speedway venture.. it makes sense, doesn't it ???? -
