  1. Indeed British speedway behaved in much the same way in the 70s/80s and look what's happened now - as you say karma.
  2. Looking at the results here http://www.speedway.org/history/96.htm#1996 It looks as though the 5 vacant positions went to the next 5 in the Scandinavian Final (Ronnie Pedersen, Klingberg, Holta, Ylinen and Laukannen) with Riss and Furlanetto who just missed out on qualification to the Continental Final (which was raced on the same day as the Inter-Contnental) replacing Laukannen and Lemon in the final line up. Of the riders who got a second chance only Riss got through to the next round.
  3. Over Christmas there was a reference in Speedway Star (Peter Oakes: winners & losers) to the recommendations of the 'way forward' group (Louis, Lemon, Dickson etc) for the future of British speedway being rejected by the BSPL. Does anyone know what those recommendations were? And what was the argument for throwing them out?
  4. Well unless the league structure changes our local track for Premier League speedway will be the ever so handy Peterborough! Guess our paths will mainly cross at Kent and Eastbourne
  5. Tilehurst, 3 July 1962 - six years before speedway came to Reading
  6. I very much doubt you would get very far with that. Most of the case law involves poaching of employees (so not relevant) and a key phrase in all the analysis is 'without good reason'. I think the BSPL could argue that "to avoid the total bankruptcy of the sport" was a good reason.
  7. The whole point of running a company is that directors are NOT personally liable. Besides contracts are with individual clubs not the BSPL.
  8. But this week's speedway in Brisbane was called off because of covid - so all is not back to normal. I'm sure anyone promoting a speedway meeting down under is still worrying about all the time and money invested being written off because of a local lockdown. And for spectators there are still covid restrictions to cope with, e.g. https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/what-you-can-and-cant-do-under-rules/major-sporting-events
  9. Thanks to my pre Xmas issue arriving very late I received my third new edition in 8 days! And a most unexpected article - Dave Lanning and his balls!!
  10. It is pretty obvious that they spent December working on plans for 2021 with an Easter (or thereabouts) start, and now they need more time to rework those plans.
  11. Microsoft Teams/zoom or similar. Which begs the question who will be the first promoter to attend the AGM in their underpants?
  12. They were very well matched, and I was very impressed with Luke in the two rounds I saw.
  13. And we are still waiting. Really I do despair
  14. This would suggest otherwise https://northyorkshire.police.uk/news/shocking-number-of-fines-handed-to-tier-3-visitors-ignoring-restrictions-and-visiting-york-this-weekend/
  15. I'm not sure that is correct. My understanding is that the Welsh Football League has been re-classified and is no longer elite. But genuinely elite Welsh sport ( e.g. Wrexham FC [!] can still continue.
  16. Can anyone clear up my confusion over the 250cc Class? according to SCB race sheets the results of the rounds were: Scun 1 James 2 Harrison Leic 1 Harrison 2 James KL 1 Harrison 2 James Edin 1 James 2 Vale 3 Harrison BV 1 Harrison 2 James Therefore the overall standings should read: 1 Harrison 16 18 18 (14)* 18 Total = 70 2 James 18 16 16 18 (16)* Total = 68 * per SCB regs [15.6.3] the lowest scoring round is dropped and points are awarded 1st 18, 2nd 16, 3rd 14 etc. Yet the match report of the final round says Harrison & James had a run-off for the title Why, they weren't tied?
  17. I think it is a good principle but it certainly isn't a cast iron rule.
  18. Top three in last year's Russian Ice Championship (exc seeded World champion) got a shot at FIM Ice Gladiators. Next three spots got the Euro nomination. As only 6/7 are going thru to the final it looks like the three Russians riding in Poland today have been seeded to Russian Ice Final. So the Russians riding in today's European are approx. 5th/6th/7th best Russian ice racers.
  19. Still only one for me (plus 'spare' reserve Broady). Makes me feel such a youngster.
  20. We already know of at least 4 teams that will have to make changes (Swindon, Leicester, Newcastle Kent). So if 95% are not making changes then that means there must be another 76 teams in the two leagues that are not making changes!
  21. So your solution to the problem of foreign riders not coming over because of logistical difficulties is more foreigners. (Not to mention a host of riders already committed to Poland - good luck with that)
  22. Split Waterman was the first former speedway world finalist to race at this track when he competed in the opening stock car meeting at this track.
  23. Simply not true. I struggle to think of a single unattached rider with an average over 5 who rode in 2019 and isn't already in possession 9f a 2021 team Place.
