  1. 1988, Erik Gundersen, the last of his 3 titles. I don't remember the crash you mention but Stekker would have been riding for Wolverhampton then. I do remember Per Jonsson getting excluded for knocking Hans Nielsen off, though.
  2. I think some of the 1988 World Final was shown as well... was there such a thing as Sunday Grandstand??? It was on there if so.

  4. Garry May certainly won't be reprimanding him by the looks of it..... https://www.burnhamandhighbridgeweeklynews.co.uk/sport/17740384.somerset-rebels-boss-garry-may-calls-sheffield-tigers-speedway-track-terrible/ I do remember them playing "It's A Man's World" but didn't twig that Rory was out at the time, although I do remember Talking Heads "Road To Nowhere" which isn't usually an Owlerton staple!
  5. Are riders in his situation allowed to attend, though? There are various restrictions on footballers who have tested positive for medicines etc. The riders weren't even under starting order when Schlein pushed the tapes, it was obviously an instruction from May (and if it wasn't, May certainly wasn't annoyed with him ha ha) But it just showed the rest of them up when Todd Kurtz won the re run in the fastest time up to then (he was obviously thinking of the bigger picture ) Also to be fair to Bomber, he did put in the effort when the "necessary" work had been done. As has been said, our guests had no problem with it.. huge thanks to Simon and Jake. Also great to see Drew visibly getting confidence back throughout the meeting as well.
  6. Apparently Owlerton is not being used as parking for Owls In The Park.
  7. Ashby Ville was around 40 years ago now, unfortunately time has moved on. Many football grounds from back then are now no longer fit for purpose. My point was that people have to be enticed in to begin with, in this day and age, before they even become a "true speedway supporter".
  8. You ought to see the stuff you can have if you book a party for the dogs... they only allow us speedway peasants to have the Carvery On a more serious note, people harp on about good racing before a good stadium, but nowadays people need to be enticed in by half decent surroundings, in order to see the racing.
  9. Eh? He tweeted that after Friday's meeting at Scunthorpe!!
  10. Some people would like to, that's for sure..... but had it not been for him, we'd have gone years ago.
  11. Combination of both really.... They weren't being allowed access to the track until 6.30pm on Thursday due to the afternoon dog meetings, which is not what you'd call ideal. Monday and Thursday were an issue because of the Premier fixed race nights, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday were out because of the Greyhounds, which left Wednesday evening, or the whole of Sunday.
  12. To be honest, with some of the things I read/heard at the back end of last season, I was slightly surprised they declared an intention to run this season, maybe because it is an anniversary season. I'm not saying the Bates' have done everything right, but some of the complaints levelled at them are ridiculous in the extreme, if it isn't the start time, it's the race jackets. In hindsight they would probably have been better off going with 5.30/6pm in the first place, but we're all experts with hindsight aren't we? Flagrag says "for whatever reason Sheffield fans and people do not like Sunday racing" - a lot of Sheffield people are tradionalists and don't like change, even if it might be better in the long run. I know it doesn't really help how people feel, but the first bend situation is out of the speedway's hands, and to be fair, that terracing was 90 years old and getting dangerous. The fixture list isn't entirely down to the Sheffield promotion either. People say "why don't they have Northern Riders'" etc, but riders don't seem to want to do individuals any more. Nor are people bothered about challenge matches.
  13. Would you believe, my first meeting was the Gauloises Pairs semi final in 1977, and Michael got an 18 point maximum where nobody could get near him - his partner (Ian Turner) didn't arrive until the interval!!! For some reason, presumably the fact he lived over the road, even though he had gone to King's Lynn by then, Carl Glover was one of the track reserves - he could legitimately have been Michael's partner! In all seriousness he generally rode the place quite well (apart from the British Semi Final in 1980 when he needed a win in his last heat to qualify, and he was up against his team mate the previously unbeaten Dave Jessup.... I don't need to tell you what happened ) - the Golden Helmet meeting Sidney mentions wasn't that long after the Eglese/Frank Ebdon controversies at KL and Ipswich, not that that excuses him really, but then it happened again in 1985 and 1986! That Sheffield v Poole meeting must have been late on in the season, as we didn't sign John Davis until September of that year.
  14. If you have a badge for her and get there quite early, there will hopefully be some disabled spaces left, bang outside the turnstiles.
  15. And which heat leader would that be? https://www.speedwaygb.co.uk/sheffield19
  16. But if he wants to progress to the very top, he has to learn to ride tracks like Sheffield along the way. Like I said earlier in the discussion, he's just hit the wall at the moment, but he's got plenty of his career left lol!! I think part of the problem is, they built the team up with 2 second strings and 2 reserves, who they hoped would all put in second string performances every time. But mainly they've all had more like the scores of 4 reserves.
  17. Just realised, I obviously mean after the meeting FINISHED! Like I say, I've no idea if it happened or not, but he'd calmed down pretty quick if so.
  18. I'm not saying I don't believe it happened at some point, but I went to the pit area about 5 minutes after the meeting finished and Danny was happily having a long chat/photos with the webmaster (and his wife/little boy) of this very forum!
  19. Well, that was a funny one - instead of saying Tigers were lucky, I'd say it was a bloody good effort after being 7 down with 3 heats to go, and I'd be pretty annoyed if I was a Scunthorpe fan to have lost from that position. Danny has ridden "real" number one races in the latter stages of the last couple of home meetings to get us the wins. I agree, Kasper is struggling badly, but it would seem pretty low to drop him just now, when he's just had the boot from King's Lynn as well. Drew has, in Marathon runners' parlance, hit the wall a little bit and also looked down on power yesterday, he desperately needs a spell at reserve to get his confidence back. But on the plus side, Broc Nicol is looking much better in the last two home meetings.
  20. As per the Speedway GB website.... Drew currently has a 2019 home average of 6.67, and an away one of 4.21, giving him an overall 5.50 average. This puts him 4th overall in the Tigers' averages. He was assessed at 2.00 at the start of the season, so at the moment he's trebling that at home, and doubling it away. So I'm at a loss as to how he's been a disappointment so far, especially when he's been second string for over half his meetings, and not reserve. Even his family think it's too soon for him to be second string just now. Surprisingly, our highest averaging away rider so far, also based on 2019 only, is Ty Proctor!!
  21. He wasn't that great when he rode for us before, but I didn't really have any objection with him as a third heat leader for this year. Unfortunately Kyle Howarth has been a bit hit and miss so far this season, as well. If they could all click in the same meeting it would be great.
  22. Absolutely - as an example, my team Sheffield United had a League One fixture at Southend on Easter Monday 2016, which was in the fixture list released in June 2015. So lots (at least the late hundreds if not over 1,000) booked the weekend down there, planning to set off after the home game on the Good Friday. About three weeks before the fixture took place, the date was changed to the Wednesday evening (ie 2 days later) for Sky coverage, needless to say there was uproar as with it being Easter, a lot of places had insisted on non refundable deposits etc. With us being in the Prem next season, we are going to have matches changed to daft o'clock on Sundays due to the Europa Leaguers playing on Thursdays etc, and the matches NOT being televised, which is even worse!!
  23. I'm well aware of that, but they've been in the doldrums until recent years. I still maintain there'll be plenty of armchair Prem watchers of other teams down that way.
  24. It's just unfortunate for a Saturday night track that the final has ended up between two English clubs. I read a comment yesterday that the people of Eastbourne can't like football all that much because Eastbourne Boro only get a few hundred.... in that case, the place probably has thousands of armchair Premier League supporters, if the local team isn't that high up in the scheme of things.
  25. Hi Mike, Sheffield have Redcar at home on Sunday 7th July at 5.30pm. All the other information Spinny has provided is correct though, and to confirm, parking at the track is £2.00. Postcode for the stadium for Satnav/Google maps etc is S6 2DE.
