Well, that'll save me a job, Gem lol. I'm sure I would have remembered someone from Sheffield who was a speedway fan! Unless your Mum was watching repeats on Challenge or the other ITV channels. There was a woman on once who said it was the 2nd most popular spectator sport after football - I admire her bigging it up, but sadly it ceased to be that long before The Chase was invented.

I know it is, I think Bruno must have been looking at the individual clubs part for him to say he couldn't find it on there.

International Best Pairs - Brothers
Tigerblade replied to Col's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Not having seen the Williams or Parker brothers, I'd plump for the Morans to win, although you'd have to consider the Gollobs as well. Sheffield did actually stage a Brothers' Best Pairs meeting in 1991, and the winning pair weren't even brothers....... one of the Morans dropped out at short notice and was replaced by Neil Evitts. -
Just a pity I remember sweet FA about it

I genuinely did not remember my first race as I didn't like it the first meeting I went to, but I know it was the Bass (former local brewery) Yorkshire Open on 16th September 1976. Having checked the marvellous Speedway Researcher site, Heat 1 was Ole Olsen, Ivan Mauger, Peter Collins and Reg Wilson (in that order) in a time of 67 seconds exactly. Bear in mind the track record at that time was 65.4 set by Ole earlier in the season. Apologies for deviating from the original topic a little, but my first "proper" race I remember is when I went again on 15th September 1977 to the Gauloises Pairs semi final and was hooked, upon seeing the Flyer make the gate in his white tasselled leathers. The result of that was Doug Wyer, Craig Pendlebury, Martin Ashby, Geoff Bouchard in a time of 66.8.

I'd have to say no, no and no, sadly. I was in the minority (or so it seems) of Sheffield fans actually looking forward to Sundays, with no rush after work etc. Plus the team looked exciting on paper, and the fact we signed Drew Kemp as I'm a fan of his. But the whole team except Danny and Zaine under achieved for whatever reason - although Drew's was hardly down to him as the poor kid got pushed into second string after the first month where he was quite clearly not ready for it. Plus Broc was out for most of it, so his good form was all too brief (again, one of those injuries not being down to him) My fellow Tigers fans on this topic make good points about track conditions in the daytime etc, but I still think there's a tiny element with some other folk who have no other argument but "Should be Thursday neet, allus azbin" (that's "Thursday night, always has been" to the uninitiated ) But whatver, it seems to have been an unmitigated disaster.

Gary Guglielmi interview in Backtrack issue 94
Tigerblade replied to lucifer sam's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I'm not sure if looking forward to reading it is the right description, bearing in mind I was a big fan of Billy Sanders. Obviously since then I've learned a lot more about life etc, and Gary is as entitled to say his piece as any other ex rider who broke the law/rules, it'll certainly be an interesting read anyway. -
Tai Woffinden book at £8.99
Tigerblade replied to Steve Shovlar's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
If anyone has a Kobo instead of a Kindle (a Kobo is Rakuten/play.com version of a Kindle) and in the Kobo VIP club, I got mine at £5.47, although I don't know if it's still that price. Someone has given it 5 stars, so there's 2 of us at least that own one! I've not got around to it yet. -
But the fella we replaced him with (Kasper Andersen) didn't - at the time it seemed like a good move as Kasper had done really well in his couple of weeks last season and looked like he could put a couple of points on his average, but he didn't look anything like the rider of last August, this season. (At least not whilst riding for us, anyway) Can echo other Tigers fans, the race with Zaine was worth the admission fee on its own. I too would love to see Jake Allen ride for us next year (if there is one). Genuine questions as I'm not that up on the rule book - were Lasse and Ulrich allowed 7 rides as they were already using R/R? Also could Jorgensen not be covered by IRR as A) the Diamonds were already using R/R or B ) it was a recurring injury? Like I said, genuine questions, it's obviously allowed otherwise Mr. English wouldn't have done it! As it happened, Jorgensen dropping out was the turning point of the meeting.

Favourite Rider of All Time
Tigerblade replied to wealdstone's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Shawn Moran. If you were a teenager/20 something supporting Sheffield in the early 80s, you wouldn't say anyone else. -
Sheffield's 2 are the original fixture and re-staging of Newcastle!! Couldn't be a more difficult team to re-arrange with, given they're Sundays as well. Mind you in 2017 we had the same with Ipswich and Redcar. Going back to Newcastle though, they were the correct decisions, it had rained solidly for about 30 hours before the original one, and it rained most of the day on the second one. Usually we are quite lucky, as quite often it really can rain everywhere else in Sheffield apart from over the track itself. I don't think Plymouth's are all down to the weather, haven't they had some bother with the track??
-
Terrible decision IMO, it seems a rush back for Nicol as well. Poor Drew has been forced into riding at second string for most of the season due to the averages, and as soon as he gets back to reserve (and top scores, no less), he's dropped! I know he isn't our asset and all that but it seems bloody harsh at this stage.
-
Yes, if you come along the A61 from that way, you'll see Hillsborough on your right about half a mile before Owlerton on the left. I had to laugh when you said you were long suffering supporting the Baggies... this time 3 years ago, the Blades were bottom of League One with 1 point... if someone had said then that we'd be in the Prem now, I think I would have recommended they be sectioned Most people are given the right to appeal - if he was banned during an appeal and subsequently found to be innocent/not guilty, he could put in all manner of claims for loss of earnings etc. etc.
-
I don't know how interested or not you are in football, but if you aren't, it simply wouldn't enter your psyche about a game being on. I know I have been caught up in traffic for similar things in other cities eg concerts etc! Even though it's a bit longer way around, the best bet is go up to Junction 36 and take the A61 south to Sheffield, and the stadium appears on your left after about 6 miles.
-
Well, that was just unfortunate for non football people that the Blades' game was moved from Saturday for Sky transmission. I parked my car at a tram stop just outside the city centre, got tram and bus to the football, same after the (very enjoyable ) football, which finished around 4pm - the bus was on diversion on the way back in, and it ended up stopping right by another tram stop, and one appeared just as I'd got off the bus... bear in mind this is Sunday timetable as well! Obviously I know the non traffic jam routes to the speedway, there for 5pm, bingo. Yes, the WiFi is helpful, isn't it? Saves your own data, anyway. As I sit inside, sometimes I even take my tablet! Anyhow... the meeting.... we won much easier than expected, even allowing for Craig Cook not having a vintage meeting. I'll excuse Danny not being quite on it as he has got us out of the cart more than once this season. Drew is struggling as the averages have dictated that he be second string for all but the first month of the season, so he is a little out of his depth. I heard that he may be back at reserve when the next lot come out, though. Kurtz and Sedgemen have really made the difference, compared to who they have replaced, at Owlerton at least, with no disrespect intended to Ty Proctor and Broc Nicol.

Sheffield Tigers v Newcastle Diamonds
Tigerblade replied to Col's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
How ironic would it be if the re staging was on a Thursday! Although unlikely, due to Danny King's commitments. Unless of course the Witches have any free Thursdays. -

It depends where you are in Sheffield I guess - I live close to Junction 31 of the M1, and I can be on the M18 in 10 minutes, and it's motorway practically all the way there. I remember going to Crowle which is just outside Scunthorpe for something whilst Sheffield were closed in 1989/90 and finding it was so easy to get there, I wished that speedway was there then. Of course back in those days it was a case of imagining the least likely thing in the world to happen, and Scunthorpe reopening was somewhere below that! As for yesterday, I went to Barnsley on Saturday which obviously took me in reasonable proximity to Owlerton and much of the day it was just like a monsoon, I'm amazed it wasn't called off earlier to be honest. -
Precisely what I was thinking when I was watching last night too! Plenty of experienced riders have crashed on the slow down.
-
Ideally Drew would still be reserve, unfortunately the two we signed up as second string have ended up injured and dropped. Still don't know how Bowtell missed him when he fell after Heat 6, though! As for the meeting as a whole, well it was more or less the reserves making a difference (I was right for once ha ha), but everyone played their part, and had it not been for engine failures by Zaine and Chunk, the winning margin could have been bigger.
-
He didn't just jump straight in with Sheffield, he had a couple of months with Ipswich last season. Plus he is also riding for Kent in the NL this season. As for today... could go either way, Richard Lawson rides Owlerton well, Kennett has had good and bad meetings there, it might depend on the reserves.

EASTBOURNE V SHEFFIELD SAT 1ST ?
Tigerblade replied to gee jay's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
According to both the Eastbourne and Sheffield websites, this fixture is now on 31st August. -
Bear in mind, he accepted the guest booking at short notice, so he may have had some a couple of days before, thinking that it wouldn't matter.
-
Possibly, although Richard Lawson rides it well. Like Screm says, possibly Glasgow otherwise.
