  1. Well, if we are starting half an hour before Edinburgh, that'll definitely give us a few chances to bang a few 5 - 0's in!!!
  2. The problem was being forced to call off home meetings with our fellow Thursday night tracks, obviously they're twice as difficult to rearrange as everyone else. Certainly with the original Ipswich meeting, it began to tip down Gothenburg 1977 style about 6.45pm and they kept "giving it 10 minutes" until 8.15, so it's not as if it was called off lightly. Prices for Thursday are as they would have been today http://sheffieldspeedway.co/ticketoffice
  3. Sheffield have seniority over Redcar and Ipswich for Thursday nights, so I would imagine the fixture was scheduled originally for Friday. But like you say, if we aren't racing tomorrow ourselves, it does seem a bit odd, yes!
  4. Exactly - Havvy's dreads were considered "out there" in 1992 if I remember correctly!
  5. I haven't asked for an autograph since Sheffield's British League days, I don't think! My first autograph was Ivan Mauger - we knew someone who helped in the pits at the time at Owlerton so he got it for us. Sheffield riders are generally approachable as far as I have seen, and the promotion has had the occasional "meet the rider" events in between 6.30 and 7.00 in recent years where youngsters can have selfies etc. Re Ole Olsen team riding - we soon learned at Sheffield when Alan Molyneux joined, how good Ole had been!
  6. It certainly wasn't the other Thursday when he was here for Workington. Now we've said that, no doubt he will rock up tomorrow and get a maximum!
  7. Been lovely and sunny for the last few hours about 3 miles away (although I do realise that's not entirely helpful)
  8. I also was very surprised that Jan was not excluded, although from the way he kept looking behind, I'm not actually that sure he knew what it was. Certainly something I've never seen before in nearly 40 years. Maybe he would have been better off retiring from the Heat, given that Tigers were on a 3-3, and Redcar got a 4-2 from the re-run. Having said all that, when he was excluded in Heat 12, many a time I've seen the referee allow all 4 back. Those two late wins by Josh Bates were absolutely immense and for me, that's what swung it for the Tigers. It was a brilliant result from my point of view as rider replacement yielded only 6 points, and basically there were only 3 Tigers on form!
  9. We won by a couple of points in September 2001, but this is definitely the most impressive result there. I was totally not expecting that, especially after Lasse was ruled out.
  10. What a wonderful piece of planning... Sheffield United are at Boro on the Saturday, I wasn't initially going to go as the match is being televised, but I've now had a change of heart
  11. Only thing I can think of is that they thought they had a better chance of hitting 60 by keeping Grav in the heat... bit of a lame thought I know.. Decent meeting actually despite the score line.
  12. I'd expect so, I don't know how easy/difficult it would be to administer another admission price just for Ipswich/Redcar fans - a price of, say £25, would be acceptable to me as I'm watching both meetings. But of course I get that Ipswich fans would perhaps want to set off for home instead of watching the Redcar meeting, just as Redcar fans probably wouldn't want to get there for 3.30 and then hang around for 90 minutes/2 hours waiting for their meeting.
  13. It's just sod's law that the weather has been like it is when we're hosting a fellow Thursday club. Thunderstorms at 6.45 after days of sunshine the promotion can't do anything about of course, it's just frustrating when they keep saying "definitely on" when most parts of Sheffield have had rain for 36 hours solid and it doesn't look like changing in the next few hours.
  14. We have raced the PLRC on Sundays plus of course have managed to arrange the Ipswich fixture on a Sunday, and last year we had the play off fixtures on Wednesday nights which was previously unheard of!! I seem to think Mondays were becoming increasingly unavailable for some reason, but don't hang me on that statement.
  15. Are you referring to the League match against Edinburgh which was called off to accommodate the restaging of the KOC match? It's just the way I am reading it seems to imply that the KOC match is still awaiting restaging, when it has been raced. Even though Sheffield have race night seniority Ipswich will already have scheduled Thursday home fixtures. They were probably the last team we wanted to end up being drawn against, and I'm sure Ipswich feel the same way!
  16. Now you've mentioned it, that seems to ring a bell, although I don't know what stage talks got to. Round about the time we were meant to be signing Keith Chrisco from Birmingham, I think he (Chrisco) had agreed terms and then decided about a week before the start of the season that he was going to stay in the States.
  17. It was reported he wanted to join Sheffield at the end of 1978, and he eventually joined Cradley. Like Salty says, he dipped alarmingly after that, IIRC he got injured in the 1979 World Pairs and never seemed to recover from that. Such a shame at a relatively young age.
  18. Apologies for quoting my own post if it breaks any forum rules, but I have remembered that he rode for Sweden in a World Team Cup qualifier at Belle Vue in June 1978, my first visit to Hyde Road.
  19. Me neither... always assumed she was born in Oz because Neil and Phil were, but in reality I have no idea! Going back to the topic... another thing I have learned is that speedway fans moan endlessly as to why the sport isn't given identical coverage to sports with millions more fans, but also moan that TV exposure isn't any good for the sport
  20. Jason Crump has more English heritage than Tai has Australian (I remember reading an interview with Phil where he said one of his grandparents came from Devon and emigrated to Oz at the turn of the last century) but I bet the Aussies didn't give a monkeys.
  21. I think it's unfair to single out Branford, he fell in Heat 6 and seemed to really struggle after that. Plus all the Tigers bar Howarth seemed to have at least one duff race during the meeting. It would be an understatement to say I'm not well up with the rules, but someone yesterday suggested that if a reserve is withdrawn from the meeting by the Track Doctor, then they are able to fill his rides.
  22. Promoters can't do right for doing wrong with call offs. It's a risk with early ones, especially if the weather ends up being nice in the evening, but then again 3 weeks ago people were standing outside/sitting in cars, not to mention had already paid to go in, for an hour whilst they kept "giving it 10 more minutes" before eventually giving up the ghost.
  23. I remember going to Hyde Road in September 1986 and seeing Sheffield win by something like 46 - 32 which was usually unthinkable at Hyde Road, and a few Aces fans booing PC Funnily enough a couple of weeks before the above mentioned Belle Vue trip, Sheffield were due to race on the August Bank Holiday Monday at Wolverhampton, but it was called off before the supporters' coach was due to set off, the only meeting still on was Newcastle v Boro and the driver agreed to go to Brough instead. Did we get some surprised looks when the coach rolled into the car park!!! Anyhow, as bri1966 says, 1986 was not a vintage year for the Federation Specials, however that night they hammered Boro who were near, if not top of the league, 54 - 23 completely out of nowhere.
  24. Penhall 1981/1982 Muller 1983 Gundersen 1985/1988 Nielsen 1986/1987 Jonsson 1990 Quite a few doubles there!
